Hi. I've been experiencing a pretty dead few months work-wise and I'm trying to use it to get ahead on developing a few new concepts to pitch later down the line. Here is one of them, but this is very far away from finished character designs that I am happy with. I'm not the best at anthro art and finding the balance between very realistic Redwall style animal people and things closer to my natural cartoony style is challenging. Maybe this is a problem I would get another artist to work on, rather than me.

In short, the pitch is:

If you had a time machine, would you kill Hitler as a baby?

Many have thought about this hypothetical at least once in their life, but in a world of kingslayers and magic, this question is a reality.

In a terrifying future, a brave knight and a wise sorcerer find a way to travel back in time to stop their tyrant king before he has a chance to grow up and destroy the world. But faced with ending the life of a currently-innocent baby, the two assassins falter and decide to raise him instead to be a good man.

But now they find themselves stuck in a timeline that is changing every second and the lost prince’s family are on their trail - did they do the right thing by changing history or does destiny have a way of fighting back?

The setting of this story is Overlan, a world where humans, dogs, cats, mice and birds (among a few others) take the place of man, elves, dwarves, etc. Each tribe has it's own complex relationship with one another and it is meant to resemble some of our real-world relationship with these animals - the dog people are loyal to the humans, while the cats are a bit more independent, etc.

I see this setting as actually a bit more modern then the art might suggest, kind of just pre-industrial revolution, maybe more similar to stuff like the Howl's Moving Castle anime and Metaphor then Middle Earth.

It's just a concept at this stage, these characters are plot-points atm, rather than characters, but I might be exploring more about this this week. Comp titles in the world of graphic novels might be similar to Bone, Amulet and 5 Worlds but also taking a big bit of tonal inspiration from Full Metal Alchemist.

What do you think? Would you read this?

To answer the question: only if the consequences won’t be worse. But, it never works that way 😿

That sounds really cool!!! I love full metal alchemist! (This message might get posted twice because of Internet issues)

I would read it, time travel and what-if alternations are always a big plus for me. As for your style, I have a similar style, inspired by you and other artists who draw alike, and I don't think you need to sacrifice your style completely to make an anthro char. It may not be biologically correct, but cartoony style never really is, so you could try to draw a human face, like that of Barney and add an animal nose and some animal features. For the body in general, adding too much detailed fur will only add a mess, the colored body is already mostly enough to let us know it's not skin. For a very simplified anthro style, you can look up Hataraku Onii-san (working buddies) as a reference, but still, I think your usual style is already good enough.

Ooohhhhh, pre-industrial would be SO cool, could do literally anything with what these guys live around and experience. Castle in the Sky mining towns, factories and the like juuuust barely beginning to spring up in ancient ruins. This sounds so cool Hamish, 10/10 would read!

Tori Williams

This sounds super interesting! I'd definitely read it.

Since you mentioned Hitler, I was reminded that the world of Maus also consists of cats, dogs, mice, and humans (I don’t recall any birds, though). Maybe mixing in some more obscure species could differentiate this from other anthropomorphic tales.
