In 1871, at the recommendation of her respected father, Sen, 6-year-old Ume Tsuda became Japan's first female exchange student to America. At the time, there was no place in Japan for women to receive a quality education, and the Hokkaido Development Commission, which believed that mothers needed to be educated in order to raise excellent men, decided to send female students to study abroad. Besides Ume, there were 14-year-old Ryo Yoshimasu and Tei Ueda, 11-year-old Sutematsu Yamakawa, and 9-year-old Shige Nagai, the youngest of the group was Ume. In 1882, at the age of 17, Ume returned to Japan after 11 years of study. She and Sutematsu and Shige, who completed their study abroad together, discuss their dream of creating an English language school where everyone can learn. However, the Hokkaido Development Commission was dissolved while they were studying abroad, and the Ministry of Education, which was supposed to have taken over the project, was indifferent to female exchange students, and Ume could not even find a place to work. Ume, who had always felt that as a government-sponsored student she must be useful to her country, was stunned. Moreover, she gets culture shock at the low status of women in Japan...

During that time, Shige says she is going to marry a man she met while studying abroad. Ume, who believes that marriage in Japan is not equal between a man and a woman, cannot bless it wholeheartedly... Ume is also excited to meet a university professor, Naibu Kanda, whom she met through Shige's introduction, but she finds out that he has a crush on Sutematsu... Ume then goes to work as a live-in tutor for Hirobumi Ito's wife and child...
