Almost certainly the most personal video I will ever make. I thought about calling it "Video My Life" after the "Draw My Life" craze some years back but I wasn't sure anyone would get it.

Anyway, there are not enough ways to say thank you for all your support so this video is my best attempt to do just that. I hope you enjoy and I look forward to your feedback.

The Truth About Veritasium

The truth, with photons. I hope I've articulated everything clearly in this video. If not, I'll clarify in comments. Thanks to everyone who appears in this video and thanks to everyone who watches this video! Veritasium is of course a combination of the latin 'veritas' meaning truth, and the common element ending 'ium'. I guess this is my version of the 'draw my life' craze that rolled through YouTube many years ago. Except I wanted to tell my story with the actual moments, the photons, the stored magnetic states. There's something about that which is so important to me (because I think the alternative involves fooling yourself) which is why I'm so fascinated by film and video. One of my inspirations for the name Veritasium came from the end of the poem Ode on a Grecian Urn by John Keats, in which he writes: "Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know." Thank you for sharing this :)

People caught between two different worlds are bridges to help connect them, and all of us. In your case, you actually make science easier to understand, and wonder at. There is probably a child, somewhere, looking at your videos, and thinking: "I want to do that, I want to go there." That child is the next astronaut, going to Mars; or the next scientist, on the verge of a breakthrough; or a writer, imagining worlds beyond our imagination, giving us the opportunity to ask ourselves questions we never thought about; or simply someone, living his life, and looking at the skies, and smiling. What you do is precious. Do never doubt that. Happy life to you, and your family! :-)

After watching this, I increased my pledge amount, because this video showed me that I am supporting a whole family, not just a channel, and that means a lot to me. Keep it up.

Bill Groll

I'm grateful for the courage you showed to pursue your dream and appreciate hearing how that came to be. And also your persistence in achieving such great results in your videos. I thank you for the courage to create this video and share some of your personal life with us.

Also, right when you started talking about taking a risk and going full-time on youtube, my mental "survivor bias" alarm started going off. You scored major points with me when you suddenly interrupted the inspirational music and motivational speech to acknowledge that. Doing so gave you credibility, and you even managed to turn the survivor bias around and make it a part of your argument. Well done.

The Live Toad

Best Veritasium yet. And that's a high bar!

Steve Ruis

Good on you mate, you earned my support which will continue.

As to what to do next, the biggest obstruction in the way of reason and rational decision making, so have you considered tabling the clash between science and religious faith?

Thank you for sharing - it is clear to me that persistence is the key to greatness. Not luck alone. Nor talent alone. Nor opportunity, alone. The difference between good and bad creators is the amount of stuff in the garbage. And only persistence gives you the opportunity to try more and reject again and again until you approach what you had in mind all along - as hazy as it might have been at the beginning. I admire and somewhat envy your courage to not give up your pursuits - all the best!

Uwe

even if you post less than you once did. the videos were always worth the wait

William

Derek, thank you for sharing your journey with us. I don't think I've ever told you before, but now seems as good a time as any - your content is amazing (I share with everyone I know), you are a very inspiring individual, and your impact is much greater than you could ever know. Looking forward to what else you will bring to this world.

So.. for claiming rights... (Aussie or Canadian) Or (Aussie and Canadian)

Graeme Gets

No... thank you.... your work is great :-)

William George

Congrats on your beautiful family, Derek! I love your videos and I am glad you've been able to find the niche that you love and that appeals to both your creative and engineering sides. It has enriched you, clearly, and in the process enriched those of us who have watched and learned from the content you create :)

Funny, you're the second of my YT subscriptions that have done a gratitude video this week - perhaps it's the season. I'll say to you what I said to them: You do what you do because you love it. You do it with talent and you do it with integrity. The people who watch your channel see that, which is why we come back for more. You can't fake sincerity; people know the real deal when they see it. You've worked hard and it's paying off - congratulations!

Jeff Raymakers

One of the (many) aspects of your work I enjoy is your insightful and introspective commentary. So, whatever you do, don't stop doing that. Thanks for what you've given us so far, and I look forward to whatever is next!

Scott Rowland

Hey Derek, Thank you, and congratulations! Take your time, your family should come first. We will be here. :-)

Luis

In your 7:00 video snippet you sound a lot like Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap :D Fortunately, you've improved with the years.

I came for the physics videos -- I stayed (and became a patron) for the inspirational videos on life/work. Your video on "Learned Helplessness", from a few years ago, is something I regularly go back to rewatch.

Mik Scheper

As one of your newer Patreon sponsors: No worries, mate! 😉 And I really enjoyed you sharing. It was inspiring to see that your vids from just 10 years ago looked a lot like me in front of a camera at that time, and how practice and persistence have paid off. Between you and Tom Scott's kit vids, I've become motivated to give YouTube a go myself. I have no illusions that I'll ever make a dime from it, but it seems fun, and I'm just curious about what my best effort will look like in the end. Two more things: I wish Canadians and Australians would include provinces and states when they write locations. I know where Vancouver and Sydney are, but not Traralgon or… whatever that other place was. Considering how often you post vids from within a kilometre of where I am at the time, whether NSW, California or Europe, enquiring minds want to know. (It also helps the Yanks wake up to the fact that theirs isn't the only country that has states, and will hopefully stop them developing apps that say useless things like 'Richmond, Australia' :headdesk:) The other: It's *so* refreshing to see an acknowledgement of survivor bias, and part of why I value your work so much more than most other media. Again, thank you. It's a pleasure to be a sponsor.

Jorge Sinde

Thank you fot all your work and what you made me learn. You're great professional!

Rajesh

That was an inspiring video for me, thank you! I come from engineering background too and I worked in the oil and gas industry for 3 years. I quit 6 months back and I am researching/networking/volunteering in climate change and sustainability. Still figuring out what I can do in this field.

Andreu Boada de Atela

Thank you so much for sharing this. It brought me to tears and I truly can tell you that I will always be a huge fan of yours (and a supporter too 😅).

Phillip Eastman

Aye, the lesson here is not so much "Follow Your Dreams And Someday They Will Come True" but more like "Keep Your Dreams Alive As You Get On With This Idea Of Making A Living While You Wait For Opportunity To Coincide With Preparedness". Also, I saw Snatoms on Amazon and I could not be Happier for you and all the teachers of the world that now have easy to use teaching aids that act almost as fast as the mind of a student. You need to make a TV commercial. That stuff will sell itself if folks only know it exists. And Thank You for all the work that got you to where you are. Your work is making a difference in the world.

Dan Sherman

Great video in so many ways - For me (just turned 64), best thing is your sharing story is that most of us won't know where we are going, especially early in life (including university time) in that so many options open up, many (e.g., creation of YouTube) you didn't (or couldn't) know about. Advice for the future is keep doing what you are doing, though possibly thinking of what you think would get next generation (e.g., your kids) interested in science and give them knowledge and skills to ask questions that may make their world better.
