I have the photic sneeze reflex, which means I sneeze in bright light. Roughly one in four people are like me. In this video I try to figure out what makes it happen and whether it could be evolutionarily beneficial.

The Sun Sneeze Gene

I have the photic sneeze reflex so I sneeze when I look at bright light. Check out 23andMe: http://ve42.co/23andme I have wanted to make a video about sun-sneezing for a long time. It is something I've experienced my whole life. When I go from a dark room indoors into full sunlight I invariably sneeze.

I am also a sun sneezer. Until now, I thought I was allergic to photons :)

I am a sun sneezer. My thought for many years is that my nervous system was missing a diode. When one sneezes it is impossible to keep one's eyes open. Missing the diode the reverse is true; if you cannot keep your eyes open suddenly walking into sunlight then you sneeze. There is another missing diode effect. When startled or scared a dog's eyes will dilate and the hairs on the back of the neck will raise. For some fraction of humans if you gently tickle the hairs on the back of their neck their eyes will dilate. Have fun ticking your closest friends!

Prof. Derek, I have a videotopic for you. Sciense of music and sound. How sound can be created inside a speaker, how guitar strings wibrate air and why we hear it as a note, why every instrument sound different allthou you play the same note with all of them, what does 440Hz mean, is it low or high sound, why music sound different in every room you listen to it and acoustics in general, etc etc. I know you got the point. I haven't seen any of you big sciensetubers make video about sound in use, and I think this is kind of topic you would have a lot of things to say. Thanks man, I really love your stuff, greetings from finland! :)

does saying the word sneeze stop you from sneezing because it vibrates your nasal cavity more than saying other words?

Everyone in my family has it. Many times when I feel like I need to sneeze I can look for the sun and if I can look at it right away it will bring the sneeze out. Sometimes up to three sneezes.
