It seems to me like some important exposition went over your heads, perhaps because you may not be familiar with American history. The character of Nathan Algren fought in the American frontier Wars in which entire Native American tribes, including women and children, were brutally wiped out. The atrocities that he committed caused him intense guilt and post-traumatic stress disorder, which drove him to alcoholism. The reason he is so rude and mean to people in the beginning is because he hates being honored as a hero for committing mass genocide. He is deeply ashamed of what he did, and he is disgusted by people who praise him for it.

Michelle, completely agree with you. This is such a beautiful movie. I was going to say the exact same thing. Being Scottish myself, seeing the actor who played Gant early in the movie was a joy. This was the great Scottish stand up comedian turned actor, Billy Connolly. Affectionately nicknamed ‘The Big Yin’. This was amazing from you both. Thank You Michelle. Thank You Viki.

One of the greatest movies ever made. In my top 5 for sure along with The Matrix, Shawshank redemption, Forrest Gump and Gladiator.

At the end Emperor Meiji handed Omura the sword so that if Omura's shame was too much to bear he could use the sword to commit Seppuku (suicide). Naturally the honourless Omura refused it and slinked back.

would watch these two play solitaire

Oh wow that's crazy, in the beginning of the movie Tom Cruise had a line, something like, "there is comfort in the emptiness of the sea, no past, no future," that's not word for word but it reminded me of the Shawshank Redemption, Viki and Blue just watched, Andy says something like, "Mexicans have a saying about the Pacific, it has no memory." That's so cool. I do love the Pacific, and looking out at it, it feels almost endless and like the end of something and the beginning of another. Such an awesome movie. Two movies I say prove that Tom Cruise is actually a great actor, "The Last Samurai" and "Born On The Fourth Of July".

El Mexicano
