Young Frankenstein (1974) & Blazing Saddles (1974) are much better Mel Brooks movies than this one

'Druish princess' jokes are a play on 'Jewish'.

Hello. I state that this movie I first saw as a child and since then at least 20 times (or more) and it has always made me die from laughing (as well as other Mel Brooks films, especially "Young Frankenstein"). Like all parodic films, this also needs a basic knowledge of those movies to which parody takes its cue. For example, here you have to know films such as "Star Wars", "Star Trek", "Alien", "The Planet Of The Apes", "Jaws", etc. to understand why certain jokes are made. Another very important thing in a movie like this is the knowledge of the language in which it's seen: there are so many double meanings (especially with a sexual background, such as the Dark Helmet tie or the fact that "helmet" in English means both "a hard covering that is worn to protect your head" that "the head of the penis" or the "beam" that is used to teleport the Spaceball President who can be considered both as a "ray" and as "a long thick bar of wood used to support the roof of a building" (in fact the Commondette Zircon makes a sexual joke about this); but also: "Plaiades" (constellation) and "Plaid" (checkered fabric) when the spaceship Spaceball One reaches the Ludicrous Speed; the name of the partner of Lone Starr "Barf" which in English means "vomit", at various times they refer to this thing, but also the dog's "bark"; "Yogurt" and "Yoda" of Star Wars; Prince "Valium", who always yawns because Valium is the name of the Diazepam, a strong anxiolytic that is used to treat, among other things, insomnia; "Pizza The Hutt" is a mix between the American pizzerias chain "Pizza Hut" and "Jabba the Hutt", the famous Star Wars gangster and so on). In fact, for this reason, I always recommend seeing parodic movies always in your mother tongue the first time, in order to better understand the jokes and then, if you want, see it in other languages. So, OK watch the movie in the original language even if you aren't a native English speaker and you don't understand it perfectly 100% (including the slang), but it would be better the first time to look at it in your language (I have seen it initially many times In Italian) to catch all the various jokes and enjoy it to the maximum.
