The street collapsed from the explosion , and opened up the sewer line where they were. The street collapse probably because the entire infrastructure is deteriorating from lack of maintenance. Remember no one has worked on the streets , buildings etc in 20yrs. Everything is falling apart

I don't know if you've seen that or maybe you've already thought of it, but in the first episode where Joel's daughter was at school before it all started, someone blinded her with a bracelet. If you take a closer look, his Hand twitched. That could mean, it all started much earlier and he was infected. And if you listen closely to the scene in class, you'll hear someone coughing. What is also interesting is that the teacher said something like tomorrow or something special will happen. Maybe I just expressed myself wrong, I don't know. But I watched the episode again and it all caught my eye. Just a theory but maybe, you already noticed all that.
