"You want to trade a baby ferret for a dagger? You think I am dumb? If I accept it, in a few days the ferret will escape and return to you." I stare at Tacita, who, at the last sentence, breaks eye contact and looks to the side.

With a sigh, I look at the ferret that yawns again and just hangs there in Tacita's hands. As the assassin girl moves closer, as if trying to push that deal onto me, the ferret flops around like a wet noodle.

"I think she really wanted to do that," Tess agrees with me.

"Talk to her, make it a better deal for me," I tell her.

"I can't. She is only friendly with Lily, if I get too close or push her too much, she will stab me."

Not surprised by that answer at all, I do not press the issue, and looking at Tacita, I shake my head in refusal.

So, she instead moves closer and sits on the ground near us, placing the ferret on the floor, where it looks around curiously before jumping around in those cute movements ferrets do.

Tacita, meanwhile, takes a piece of beautiful, plush red square cloth from her bag and puts it on the ground in front of her. Then, like some sort of magpie, she starts hunting for items from her backpack and from many, many hidden pockets all over her clothes.

She lays five daggers on the impromptu sales mat. Three of them are each of a different metal and shape, and two of them are made of crystal. She puts out a brooch, multiple mana stones, some of them serving as data storage, and she takes off a really thin bracelet, one ring, and one earring, each of which I identify as goddamn low pristine items.

You end up with a lot of stuff. It isn't a massive volume, but there are plenty of small, valuable items, and many of them are really shiny and nice.

In the end, she also points at the key on her forearm that allows for passage to the 6th floor of Beyond, the same one as I have on my right forearm.

Looking over all of this, I glance at the dagger in my hand and reread the description. I even let Tess check it, watching how her eyes widen.

Veto (Mid Pristine) - Extremely sharp and near unbreakable, designed specifically to neutralize high-level threats, the blade emits a constant, soft red luminescence. When Veto punctures an enemy, it targets their active skills and locks down the last used skill. The target is prevented from casting or activating that specific skill until the effect wears off.

Its ability is ridiculous, honestly. Sure, I can do similar stuff with disruption, but there are skills even I cannot disrupt if they come from within a natural barrier.

Taking into consideration it is mid pristine, which should be the highest possible rarity to get while inside of the tutorial, and even that only if in Beyond, a Beyond quest, or extremely lucky, it is easy to see how valuable it is.

Hell, if I wanted, I could sell it now for 7 million shards. Crafted items sell for 50 percent of their shop value, while items gained on the floors only sell for 10 to 20 percent. This means the dagger would likely be worth 35 million shards or something, just as ridiculous if I wanted to buy it from the shop.

Well, if mid pristine stuff were available in a system shop.

And I strongly suspect one thing, even though I have not tested it yet. I think Veto can be stacked multiple times. It likely allows one to lock multiple active skills.

Getting a grasp of this system bullshittery and how these things work, I think the first skill is blocked for the longest. Likely minutes, or probably seconds if your opponent is powerful, and with each other blocked skill, the time would be shorter. But hell, even blocking some important skill for 5 seconds can easily mean a very quick death in these levels of fights.

Lastly, mid pristine… I really still think that low pristine is for people at the brink of being Champions or fresh Champions. Proper Champions get mid pristine, and more powerful ones upper pristine items. So, though the description might not sound like it, just that rarity makes it scary. The system likes to be like that. A simple description that might even be copy-pasted over multiple rarities, while the rarity changes the strengths drastically.

In the hands of someone as fast as Tacita, this dagger would be… terrifying, truly terrifying.

Watching her intently, I hold the dagger and outstretch my hand toward Tacita to let her read the description. I watch her eyes move from left to right multiple times, and similar to Tess, they widen.

The baby ferret meanwhile jumps over to us, climbs on my leg, and climbs up to my neck, where it presses against my skin over my collarbone. For a moment, I feel its tiny cold tongue and then warm breath.

Still looking at Tacita, I reach out with one of my hands and pet the ferret. Tess does not even try to help, instead, she sits there and watches it all curiously. Though I suspect she already knows how this might end.

Weighing the dagger in my hand, I think of it once again.

Of course, I want to keep it. It is just amazing, and even if I did not actively switch my fighting style to match it, there are things I could probably learn from its effects. I already planned on stabbing myself to see how this sort of skill lock works and if I could defend against it, and I do not think I will give it out to anyone until I experiment with it properly.

Still, I hate relying on items. I do not want to change the way I fight, and I want to do these sorts of disruptions and skill lockings with my abilities only.

So, give it to Dennis? That could work, as his preferred weapon is a combination of a dagger and a short sword. Or maybe to Tess and tie the dagger to some shaft to turn it into a javelin. The problem remains: the sort of danger it would bring to anyone holding it. I can easily imagine a Champion killing either of them just to get it. It is just too valuable to go unnoticed. Even the crystal currently imbued in Dennis’s forehead is low pristine and a risk.

Meanwhile, Tacita? I can imagine that lunatic running away from even a Champion if she wanted. I can also imagine her going unnoticed, and I can easily imagine her stabbing someone ten times before they even notice, and blocking all of their active skills.

But I just keep coming back to the thought of just how great a match she and Veto are.

"Okay. Let's do it like this," I say, and pull the dagger back while scooping up the ferret and keeping my fingers moving so it can attack them playfully.

Tacita fixes her sitting position and listens carefully, her eyes peeking from behind her messy brown hair.

"I want to experiment with the dagger, so I will keep it until the end of this floor. A week or two should be enough, and if the floor continues for a month or so, I will keep it for a month."

I pause, and she sits there, the most motionless I have ever seen her.

"After that, I will lend this dagger to you. Not give. Lend." I emphasize that word. "If I ask for it, you will give it back to me at any time and without complaints."

When I look at her questioningly, she nods seriously.

So I continue, "I do not want your items in exchange. You will owe me, you will owe me a lot. But you know me, I won't be too unreasonable when I come to collect. I also want you to promise you will never use it against me or anyone belonging to me. Not even if you fall out with someone, or if they hurt you. You will never lift that dagger against anyone I consider to be with me."

Tacita seems to get it, but I think it is not enough, so my words become flatter and colder as I look into her eyes. "I really mean it. If you ever lift this dagger against someone like that, I will kill you."

I do not threaten her further, and we look at each other in silence until it is she who smiles and nods.

Tacita then points at the dagger, likely wanting to look at it for now, so I hand it to her. She takes it as carefully as a baby and turns and twists it, watching how the light reacts with the glow the dagger lets out. She swings with it, testing its weight, and at some point even puts it down next to the other daggers and compares them.

Meanwhile, I grab the ferret with the fingers of both of my hands and lift it up in front of my eyes. The tiny creature has incredibly soft fur, and its body is surprisingly warm, and I can even feel taut muscle.

I shake it, but the ferret does not seem to mind, flopping around like a wet noodle.

"Biscuit would be so happy to see you. I know you likely have nothing to do with that evil spawn of Satan ferret that saved Izzy, but you will likely end up looking similar. I would not be surprised if you were the same species," I talk to it softly and watch as the ferret nibbles on my finger, surprisingly controlling itself so as not to even draw blood.

"I wonder," I say. "You for sure aren't native to the floor, as the tutorial wouldn't allow you to move. So maybe some sort of floor reward? An egg Tacita bought from the system shop?" I continue to swing with it, and slowly it begins to yawn, its eyes closing even as the tiny creature fights hard to keep them open.

As always, these sorts of thoughts make me wonder about the interesting adventures everyone else has. Victoria meeting the Last Elf, Tacita, and Savant, both alone, clearing the floors, and everyone else. In the end, I am not the only one having twisted floors like this.

When a shadow falls over me, I look up to see Tacita carefully placing the dagger nearby. She stretches out her hands and gently picks up the sleeping baby ferret while still being very careful not to touch me, then she tucks it inside her jacket.

The three of us wait, and I sometimes open the community to see what the conversation is all about. People there mostly theorize about what the floor quest will be about, with most saying that we will probably be instantly moved to the next floor with reduced rewards. Most of all, the Easy difficulty guys seem to be excited, talking to people from Hell. Now that they have found they are safe inside their barriers, they do not stress much.

Though I wonder what they would think of the wyvern's domain covering the planet. And I wonder what they would have thought then, knowing that wyvern is as powerful as most of the Rulers, even multiple of the weaker ones combined. Didn't someone say it is as strong as an average or weaker dragon?

These people would probably be more scared after reading the message from Diligence that he will go to talk to that Wyvern, as it can very well turn into a fight.

So far, I think that ant is stalling, waiting for more Rulers to come to help if needed, but that brings risks too. Liss gets time to find what she is searching for in the Labyrinth of Xyphos, and the one winged wyvern will strengthen its domain over Xyphos.

Yet, in the end, things do not seem as bad as I thought they might be as I read the notifications that appear.

Floor Quest:

Either on your own or in cooperation with the Corporations present, lead Easy and Normal difficulty participants to the safe zones you create. Protect them and gather water for them.

Easy and Normal difficulty participants are too weak for this sort of setting and got thrown into this innocently, the same as most of you present. Even if not as powerful as attendees from Hell difficulty, the lower difficulty participants are important members of your First Generation. While this was not intended to happen, use the opportunity to share some of your knowledge and experience with them during the following weeks, as the situation changes.

Currently, due to the domain over the planet, it is impossible to move you to the next floor.

A subsystem will run in the background, and if your preparations to move lower difficulty participants to a safe space are considered inadequate, they won't be able to leave the safety of their barriers.

As the Corporations present are stuck here as well, they are allowed to contact and trade with the attendees. A strong warning is in place for attendees to be careful during such trades.

- Temporary Floor Quest given by the Ruler of Diligence.

Author note: Ehm, sooo, some of you have been impatient and I have already received plenty of messages about refunds and similar requests.

I will not read them for now as it only complicates things and forces me to do math. I will get to them a day or two before my break, at the time when my vacation is about to affect your membership.

To avoid confusion, my vacation is planned for the start of July, beginning around July 1st or a few days before or after.

As I said, I will refund you without issue if the break affected your subscription, or I can gift you a membership instead.

Until then, enjoy the chapters!

TFTC! Gun is cute, I wonder if Nat will trade with the Wyvern using the Ichor+ samples he got or if he will just have Tess and Sophie organize these zones and leave to farm Floor 5 of Beyond. Maybe some of the Corporations can sell training with/against the Adjudicators.

Jonathan Willis

tftc. I wonder how many easy or normal peeps there even are, as surely quite a few have finshed the tutorial already like on earth

nick gibbons

tftc. so this is just like that beyond floor of making a safe area

I Is Patron

Vic is an absolute monster. I'm sure that dagger had to have hit her atleast once and she just powered through it.

The Arcane Emperor

The dagger could be the key to kill Christoph. One or two stabs to prevent him from using his Mirror skill or others could be the change Nat needs to finish him off.

James

Thanks for the chapter. Keep up the good work.

Val the mysterious Jedi

Bartering is one of my hidden pleasure, not enough games or books do it well. scratchs that aspect of dnd itch

Fdrugc

Tftc how should we contact you?

Oaktree

Oh look diligence is trying to clean up his mess. And he hasn’t destroyed anything like the ancient armory on this floor. Looks like hes “diligently”working on his anger management issues good for him. Also hes helping to make life better for the lower difficulties, its nice to see him working through his problems. “Temporary Floor Quest given by the Ruler of Diligence.”

Lizy Flore

I thought the same. Christoph vastly overlooks all the Earth attendees because he’s so focused on Victoria and Nat, as he feels most threatened by them. But I think that if they all collaborate to take him down, he won’t stand a chance.

Primo

Yeah ridiculous even more when you realize she rely on duplication a lot like it's almost the only skill I've seen her use plus the bone sword, wonder what else she is hiding as she has not shown any primordial energy too when her bro has 2

Oaktree

Can’t wait to see how nat continues to ruin diligence’s reputation in the future.

Val the mysterious Jedi

I think you're underestimating absolutes, fruadrian might be trash but still isn't weak enough to be taken out by an item, it is a great weapon but not bbg weapon killer

Oaktree

As the Corporations present are stuck here as well, they are allowed to contact and trade with the attendees. Alright nat time to trade for some juicy info.

Gwiddion

Well new planets are constantly being added no? As I understand it it's not like a expansion wave that happens every few years. So the amount is likely quite high as there could be people from easy and normal here who are in their first or second year of their tutorial.

Gwiddion

But she isn't constantly using it. And as she is a concentration coldy like Nat im guessing it would disable her concentration skill. As I'm quite sure she has it running all the time.

David Vieira

Not only that, they would have to be on this floor no? Seems weird there are any at all. Most should have to be on the last floor or if they gave up on ones of the lower ones

Bob

I'm not sure. she seems to be very cautious as shown when she criticised Nat for being careless with the laser-eyes guy.

Primo

Think I realize what Nat is going to try to do to beat Adrian, his mirror skill will be useless & might even be his downfall if he uses it against Nat, my theory is that he will get his mana vessel trait to the level above by nuking his constitution stat via the 5th floor beyond sacrifice while relying on his "chestplate" project to contain his mana & not explode, this will change his body deeply to adapt to mana also solving his mana construct problems, but how low will he nuke his constitution to get that advantage over Adrian, 50, 20, 10 😅 maybe even less while he is on Lily life support to give his body time to adapt, the price can be steep indeed but Nat is crazy for more mana

Simon Löfroth

Enjoy your vacation! Well earned I’d say

Primo

The craziest thing is I don't even think she has a concentration skill, I think that's just her unbothered at anything because she couldn't care less

Lizy Flore

The dagger wouldn’t kill him, but it would provide a good opportunity, or lay the groundwork for one. That’s what we are saying.

Nemesis

I wonder if Nat could use it as a training tool. Like if he blocked his mana manipulation and then tried to manually manipulate his mana without the skill

Gwiddion

She has intent and duplication im pretty sure intent is some sort of concentration type skill.

Terri Harris

Wow! Nat was so rational. An I.O.U. from Tacita could be gold. Now Nat gets to channel his inner professor Elian and blow the minds of easy and normal difficulty! TFTC!

blaw

Although possible this would require Nat to rely on an item. And just this chapter it was stated again that he strongly dislikes doing so.

Augustus

First thought when reading the dagger description... He is going to stab himself to train mana manipulation.

Edmund Dillon

Tftc!!! Im excited to see where this goes. Especially the labyrinth. Can you imagine the 3 way fight between Lissthaniel and labyrinth lissthaniel, and labyrinth lissandra

Adrian Rake

I think that this quest might be a great Opportunity for Nat. He just have to make a deal with one Corporation and start creating for it his overpowered weapons and mana black items in exchange for creating a huge and fully operated safe zone for the weaker attendents. Problem solved. 🤷🏼‍♂️💪😉

Matthew Hay

Isn't that technically what he did every time he combined Mana Manipulation into another skill? Still feels like no one has even mentioned this as a thing and Nat seems to have always kept it to himself as well.

Levi

Anyone that asks for a refund because an author is going on holiday is an easy difficulty enjoyer.

kyle

Guys what job doesn't have Paid Time Off let the man take his 2 weeks off in peace. At most (if your subscription starts on the first) you lose $5. That's a candy bar and a coke. Goodness folks!

Crow Says Caw

Yep agree with Lizy, I think Tacita hyper-stabbing the guy multiple times in a second could create a solid window of opportunity for Nat et al. To take him down!

Crow Says Caw

I feel like she suffers from some form of psychopathy brought on by the trauma of childhood experiences which allows her to mute her emotions. But she still holds onto her affection for her mother and brother so not a full-on psychopath? The state that her brother Nat has tried to emulate in book 1 etc. Maybe it’s been translated into a skill? If so I’d say it would probably be “control” like Liss has

J W

So will nat go into the labyrinth instead of playing babysitter?

BroLord211

I believe that this isn't just Earth's tutorial, it is everyone in every tutorial that was on that floor.

Gutz

Let's be real: Nat is currently crafting some insane stuff with the best crafters or beyond, using a true fragment from earth. This dagger looks fine, but i can understand why he wouldn't care that much about it in the end. Mid pristine will probably become trash to him in a year or less: who cares.

Lance Beam

TFTC. Even if Nat can't or doesn't figure out how to emulate the skill lock ability of the dagger, figuring out how to resist the effect would be invaluable.

Matt Corcoran

Am I the only one who read the author note as the ruler of diligence? Perhaps that is cerim's true identify...careful everyone, we may have been mocking the ruler in the comments section here for months. We all know how reckless the ruler of diligence can be.

RJ Barnes

TYFTC! Your breaks are always as long as you say they are and this novel is the best damn written fantasy on the internet so why would anybody want a refund?

Kaladin

I think you're underestimating inflation. That's probably one or the other. I think the readers are entitled to ask for a refund, it's a paid service with an expected product. If the forewarning was a couple weeks more I don't think there would be an issue, but it's the late notice for the month to month subscribers. I think both parties are handling it as they should along with those of us who don't care.

kyle

That's my point, at most You're missing out on $5 worth of paid services.... If you're worried about $5 which will literally only buy you a candy bar and a Coke, you probably shouldn't be subscribed to anyone on patreon. That's my underlying point.

Kirin

Thank you for the chappie!

Florin Cojocaru

I call slander on the "same as most of you" :)

Morghit

Who are those asking for refunds? Cmon y’all isn’t it supposed to be a donation? It’s 10 bucks and it’s just 2 weeks, let it go. Don’t be a cheapskate, and if you really need the money, you should not be spending it in the first place for stories that will be released for free in like a month or two. Please live reasonably!

Nemesis

I was thinking they may sell (or drop) some nice loot that is definitely above mid pristine

Nemesis

I think Ruby would know at least. Her ruler/handler access should give her that info. Also she watches him fairly often i think

Nemesis

But I think he raised the possibility of training to replicate the effect with his own skill. Maybe he'll learn a new skill if necessary

Nemesis

Only worth it as long as he believes she will keep her word

Nemesis

I think Nat is trying to avoid spreading around knowledge of his black mana outside the tutorial, at least somewhat. That is probably why he didn't use it in the games. While the info is probably spreading, there is no reason to make it apparent to people who may not know yet or don't realise its him. Especially people who may be morally grey at best

Nemesis

There should be very few normal and easy attendees from Earth on this floor, right? Most of them have left at this point and those that haven't are probably on floor 13, or the early floors because they chose to treat it as a vacation, or were too scared to push forward. Most of the low difficulty attendees will be from other tutorials

Andrew

Thank you!

mulchymulcher

If their version of Xyphos wasn't as dangerous as the real one, a handful of them may have decided to stay on the floor until the tutorial ended. It could also be the case that *everyone* still in earth's tutorial got dragged in, regardless of the floor they're on.

Alex

Thanks for the chappie! Nat will get another powerup thanks to his selective adaptation skill ! And he could probably teleport a lot of attendees as well. Which can bring him a nice quest reward. And i wont forget so soon the fact that he will mess with the system as heck to kill adrian and middle fingers the system and rulers

Kenny

I assumed it pulled in everyone who was on the 11th floor, regardless of when their tutorial began. So the easy difficulty folks here could still be in their second year from a tutorial that started after Earth's.

Kenny

When Kim and Maya were attacked by the 6 adjudicators I assumed the corporations just had that many, but I wonder if they were all a copy from the separate floors that got brought along with the attendees.

Jay

Most people pause subs when they take time off. I'm curious why that option is being avoided.

Immanuel Medina

You’re over here writing peak multiple times a week and people are complaining about refunds? Wild

Gwiddion

That was my understanding too. The way ruby explained it to kyralon. All 11th floors are fused with the real planet.

kyle

Because patreon is a garbage platform.... And when an author or somebody pauses subs nobody new can subscribe... Unless they fix that over the years.

Jonathan Willis

I didn't say it was earth's? I said i assume a lot of the easy people have probably finished like on earth

Joe Woodhouse

Eh, think bigger. Is there an Upper Pristine version of this - perhaps after using a Pristine Upgrade Token? - that could affect the Ruler of Pride?

Luis Guerrero

You are missing the point for some its about the principle he literally just took a break not that long ago personally I don't care I just like to support the author to hopefully keep getting more amazing stories, but I can see why people would be frustrated

Lizy Flore

I think you’d need more than pristine to hurt Pride 😂

NatXLily

yep... sadly cant contribute to your planet... scrubs lol

TreeReader

Lol enjoy time off who cares about refund

Gwiddion

But you are missing that there is no set start point for all tutorials. there are constantly planets starting their tutorial. Which therefore means that there are constantly new people entering and leaving their tutorials. This means that even though easy and normal tutorial attendees are faster through their tutorial. The fact that new ones are constantly starting and that there are a lot more of them than hard hell and beyond attendees, id wager that there are way more easy and normal people at this point on the planet than all other attendees from the other tutorial difficulties put together.

Gavin Burchett

Nah, the amount of benefit we get from the subscription is insane very few other authors publish so.manu chaptes ahead on their Patreon. Only brokies complaining

kyle

I think of myself, and us as a collective, as more of his employer. We are sponsoring him to write full-time because we love this story and he is entitled to have time off. Just like you or anybody else that works. A person is entitled to have time off, specifically paid time off... 6 or 8 weeks a year is not unreasonable by any means. Between my vacation, sick days and holidays I get 40 days (8 weeks) a year. Now don't get me wrong. I want there to be a chapter there every single day as well but that's a whole different thing, right? He's still entitled to have some time off, and he shouldn't have to take a pay cut to do it, in my opinion.

Primo

I think it's not a coincidence that he got selective adaptation skill and adaptive defense passive, he might just use the plate to survive until his body can handle it and adapt maybe a better primary class at level 450 will help too

AFunkyLad

Love your books Cerim!

Claro reyes

Let cerim take his break ffs. If you can't afford to lose 10-20$ then you shouldn't be spending it on this.

Azalea

Screw the refunds. I'm a staunch believer in paid vacations!

ariel maoz

Completely agree, cerim posts ~20 chapters/month and takes only 10$ for 40 chapters ahead, i follow stories at the same price that have 4-8 a month and still have similar breaks. If he would have posted 3 chapters a week like many others you wouldn't hear so much complaints, also cerim and one other are the ONLY writers I've seen that offer complete refund to everyone who asks when going on less than a month break

Mister Cakers

He could also practice undoing the disabling effect the dagger places on him. Aswell as developing a way to disable skills in the way the dagger does.

Chun

@Matthew Hay if i remember correctly, the wording the system uses for skill combination tokens also says it’s either ‘extremely difficult’ or ‘unlikely’ for you to get the skills you used for the combination back, so the fact that more than half(?) or a majority of nat’s skills are combined from mana manipulation (with some skills being made in conjunction with it multiple times mind you) is definitely insane. I wonder what someone who’s knowledgeable about skills like Kyralon would say about this.

wolf Bound

I’ve caught up 😭

wolf Bound

Enjoy ur vacation cerim!!!! We gotta make sure you don’t burn out so we don’t lose you 🥰

John

Take your vacation, relax and recharge. I’m glad you’re able to do so. I’m not stressing a refund, I’ll just go back and reread 😁

Matthew Hay

Some people treat their subs like a subscription service for something like Netflix. This stems from how a lot of authors have marketed various tiers and services for sub fees. Talk of expected regular release rate, etc. This inevitably clashes with expectations set by comparison to major corporate services. Netflix does not go on vacation, have emergencies, travel, need time off to catch up on story debt, etc. Though all of these things will happen for an individual eventually. You will even see people annoyed the authors don't maintain a hidden surplus to backfill should an emergency come up, just so their regular timing is never interrupted... Personally, I've always seen it as a patron relationship, given the site we're on. I just want the author to keep working with minimal worry about paying for their living expenses. Obviously this mentality is more foregiving when it comes to lack of new material or schedule slippage. I only really grow concerned if the author seems to be retreating into some sort of depression... Anyway, the frustration is about broken promises, as Sanderson would say. Unspoken promises which differ based off personal lenses and the context with which they entered into the contract. Also probably some youthful intemperance.

Malkym Lesdrae

no refund. I sponsor you so you can write great stuff and also take vacations and live life.

Carly

Agreed. Some of y’all ungrateful. Cerin puts in the work. Consistently. They deserve a vacation not a guilt-trip!

Lonnie Sizemore

Who's complaining? Support an author or don't it's easy to cancel a subscription. Harassing a person for taking time off is a quick way to burn them out. Go read on royal road for a bit then come back.
