As I watch yet another corporate ship leave, I begin to wonder where all these promised to me Champions and even the two Absolutes are. I am curious about them, honestly.

I strongly suspect that the mora, Raga, might be a Champion, maybe even an Absolute, though it is hard to say. That mora also moved on her own shiny ship with no one else on board other than an Adjudicator, even if it is possible she had more of them there.

Otherwise, the corporate rats we meet aren’t that powerful. Well, I mean, they are often over level 400 or have multiple guards of a similar level, but I never felt pressured by them. Sure, combat would be dangerous; after all, I have merely three years in the system, while they most likely have centuries or more. But there is something to be said for growing up by being thrown into danger, often caused by the tutorial or myself.

Plus, Tacita.

Yup, I bet that dexterity lunatic would wipe the floor with most of the people we meet without them even noticing. Unlike me, they might be aware that she is fast, but not aware of how fast. And if I threw her Veto… well, let’s say I think killing a Champion together wouldn’t be such a problem.

Of course, that applies only to a fresh or average Champion. Some proper mid-grade or peak Champion is likely something entirely different and closer to an Absolute than a weak Champion. But even there… if they had a weakness I or Tacita could exploit…

If. If. If. If my corgi had wheels, he would be a bike.

I let these thoughts amuse me as I endure Sophie’s still angry gaze, as she burns holes into me ever since Izzy immediately told her what I did. I also got shouted at. Maybe the blood on my clothes told on me as well.

These Martinez sisters stick together stronger than ever before, and it makes me wonder if Sophie really told Izzy the thing she told me when she was trapped in my mental space.

That reminds me, it has been a while since I had an intruder in my mental space, and it feels nice. Though with the amount of jinxing I have done as of late, something is bound to happen soon. Be it corporations kidnapping me for my trait or a new intruder in my mind.

While our group 4, also known as the Angry Kittens, as Aaron telepathically reminds me, begins to work on the substitute floor quest, I feel a hint of sad nostalgia. That is the best I can describe it.

Every one of them went off to do their own stuff in a way that shows they know where they are best suited and what role fits them. They often use inside jokes I am left out of, as I wasn't there when they were created.

We find an area where multiple ships of different corporations have landed and begun to dig a hole to create a large underground structure to bring Easy, Normal, and some Hard difficulty attendees into.

All of it feels like it is not a permanent solution, as it doesn't have to be, and it is only Diligence giving us something to work on so we do not think too much. Because he likely thinks everyone is a workaholic like him.

The Angry Kittens join the corporate staff and other attendees who gathered here to help with the construction, sometimes going to meetings to plan out how to bring the attendees here. Some even run or fly around to map out the locations and such.

Trading starts too, with each side trying to scam the other, and I notice there are a few places where even Hell difficulty attendees can move into for a rest.

I am reminded that not everyone is able to stay in this heat for hours or days, even if they are from Hell. Either they begin to run out of mana to keep up their skills, or the mental wear of constantly using them begins to show. Some even wear special clothes with tubes and cooling liquid flowing through them.

Standing on one of the dunes with the heat all around me, I watch them move into dome barriers or sometimes even into the hangars of the ships. I look down at my scarred arms and my casual clothes.

I don’t even remember the last time I wore proper armor or any sort of gear, yet almost everyone here has some.

However, even as I think that, there are monsters with incredible defenses that don’t even have to pretend to try to defend against the heat. Their bodies just endure it all.

Lily, and to a point, Dennis, with his doubled stats, handles it better than most. Izzy, too, thanks to her evolved trait that must serve as some sort of coolant flowing through her body. Noodle also seems to enjoy the heat, always moving where it is hottest, and Blackie, encased in that red armor, just stands there like a statue, scaring people.

As Lily gets pulled into the barrier and Maya puts her in a chokehold to Lily’s confusion, and Dennis gets into yet another fight with Min-Jae over something they found while I was in the Beyond, I just stand there.

There is a feeling that I don’t belong here until Tess climbs onto my dune and taps my shoulder.

When I look at her, she seems to read my mind. Like she is some Izzy 2.0.

She grabs my hand, pulling me towards the others.

“Sometimes, you think way too much,” she says simply, and then I hear Dennis complaining about where I was slacking off and telling me to inform Kim that, since he and Aaron are now combined, he is, for some goddamn reason, counted as twice as tall as previously because of some weird logic.

While sitting inside the barrier, I open my eyes and look at the training pyramids floating all around me. It is the evolved version of the training I called “evil orbs” that Lissandra taught me so long ago.

Ever since then, I have been training mana shaping with them as much as possible. Now, my effort is interrupted by a notification.

[Mana Manipulation - lvl 84 > Mana Manipulation - lvl 85]

It feels almost weird to read it out of combat, though cases like this are more usual than what I am doing.

“Anything happen?” Min-Jae asks, with hundreds of metal orbs floating around him in dizzying patterns. Uninterrupted, they continue to move even as he talks.

I shake my head and reread the notification before closing my eyes and concentrating on my mana sense and the pyramids I train with.

It is impossible for me to become a Champion inside the tutorial. One of the requirements is to complete the tutorial, something the system forced in since the start, that has not changed, even as the Rulers, led by Ruby and their own intentions, replaced the original tutorial with the current version.

I think it kind of makes sense. After all, you are a Champion, a Champion of somewhere or something. That title stays even if Earth were destroyed and that connection severed. The system just likes this theme. Connecting, I mean. Connections between master and disciple. An Absolute connected to a planet. Connecting two planets together in a pairing, and so on.

Another requirement to become a Champion is five active skills at level 85 or higher, which I almost tend to consider an easy task, rarely realizing how ridiculous that feat is.

The third requirement is to become a master of your subclass.

The fourth is a level over 450, meaning you must have your primary class upgraded.

And that is it. How simple, isn’t it?

Becoming a master of your subclass is difficult on its own, as you do not even get an idea of how. You just have to hope you lucked out, picked correctly, and can enjoy the support of your subclass in everything you do.

A level 85 skills… that is what a Champion must have. I have been told by Doc that most beyond attendees do not even break through the level 69 to 70 bottleneck during the tutorial, and it sometimes takes them decades back on their home planet to raise a skill up to 80, if ever.

And even then, 5 to 10 is the usual number of people on each planet that get to fulfill the requirements to become a Champion.

Of course, the older the planet, the more time people have to reach that level. But that also means the planet is powerful and likely has no true danger forcing such growth. These people then often leave and become Champions somewhere else, as that is also somehow possible. Then there are internal strifes, pairings, and other situations that often reduce the number of Champions or candidates per planet.

5, 10, 20, it does not matter that much, honestly. But it is interesting to think about.

I open my eyes, knowing that I will not be able to fully concentrate again because of how giddy I am about the skill level-up. So, I separate a part of my mind to lounge around and let the bulk of my mental capacity focus on training.

“Lily,” I call to our healer.

Sitting near us, with her back resting against Maya’s, she lifts her eyes off the Fuci in her lap, who is biting her fingers, and asks, “What?”

“Starting now, you breathe manually,” I say.

Even without turning, Maya groans, annoyed.

“I bet I could hold my breath for hours if I wanted,” Lily says with a smile.

“Of course, air is there mainly to supply the brain,” I answer.

Min-Jae chuckles, but Lily does not even hesitate as she continues to brag, knowing how to hurt me.

“Did you know there is a chemical your body releases when it thinks you should feel tired? And some other stuff built into your muscles that can run out? I met a few attendees with traits that suppressed those things and supported the generation of some other chemical. At least, that’s how I think they tried to explain it at the Academy. I bet if I tried, I could mimic it.”

“That isn’t even a reaction to what I said.”

“Also, what do you think of this?” She smiles, and quickly her eyes change color. Her left one turns gray, and the other turns brown.

“Show-off.”

“And this?” Lily’s hair turns white, and two horns grow from her forehead while her eyes switch color to red. The fake Demon heart she has been working on beats, distantly mimicking a real thing.

At that, the golden ferret on her lap freezes and twitches, quickly squirming out of her hands. Fuci hops a few paces away, stands on its hind legs, and looks at Lily in confusion.

All the changes revert back, but even as Lily reaches out her hand, Fuci refuses to come back to her. Instead, the ferret jumps in that way they move, not directly straight, but with its body turned slightly diagonally, and it comes to Tess, climbing onto her and up to the top of her head to nestle into the blonde hair it has been amazed by since it first saw her.

Tess doesn’t even move or let it bother her, and instead continues to watch something far up in the sky.

“Maybe if you learn to turn into a ferret, Fuci will come back to you,” I say.

Lily rolls her eyes and leans back, pushing Maya, who reaches back and playfully hits Lily’s head a few times until they settle.

Five minutes later, the surface under the barrier ripples as a signature I recognize pushes its way inside. The not fully accepted, but honorary member of The Boys.

Savant, of course, already knows about us, so he makes his way toward us and sits on a boulder nearby, entirely ignoring the manablock chair that is now free, as Sophie went away a while ago.

The cowardly man must know I would have unmanifested it the moment he tried to sit on it.

“How good are you at deciphering stuff?” I ask him.

“Decent,” he answers.

I throw him a mana stone Tacita stole from the first corporation we met, and Savant catches it.

“Me and Sophie tried, and both of us left some notes there so you can try as well. Just make sure no one sees you with it. You are an accomplice now.”

Savant looks at the stone, then at me, and for a while, outside of the barrier.

In the end, he stays where he is and gets to work.

Puzzle time!

Still don’t know how to feel about savant….. what’s his role in the grand scheme of things, because he’s the type to run away if the ‘after tutorial’ pairing goes bad.

Twmmy

Savant always being the reluctant tagalong, I wonder if he will bring up Nat stole all his stored mana. Nvm he wont, act like a more mature Nara that one.

this just in: The CRUEL and EVIL individual known as Nathanial IMPRISONS and FORCES the innocent and kind Savant to work on his EVIL mana stone

Val the mysterious Jedi

Everytime tess does a heroine thing it makes me want to sing the little mermaid song "kiss the girl" at nat. Savi at the end calculating the his loot gain vs his patience lost because group 4 attract so much nonsense, the most cowardly loot goblin.

Eilis

If my corgi had wheels 😭 I read that and immediately had to rewatch the British carbonara clip 😂

Val the mysterious Jedi

Savi is the wild card, he has his own code, he was lift to die by his fellow earthers but preserves, he might have people important to him on earth but he isn't the focus, what we know is he patiently walks towards power.

Alexander

I like him, he and Tacita provide a good balance to Nat, and I still think that Savant is equally strong as Nat if they both went all out.

ariel maoz

Nah, I think Savant will give everything he has to earth and will not run away, he will probably try and go for the absolute title and fight nat, but he will not betray earth

tost

The fuhhh! Came out of nowhere: "If my corgi had wheels, he would be a bike."

Madje Tobi Marc'Avent Tchona

The forced Savant hate is so overplayed at this point. Really think, other than his minor rivalry at the beginning and Nat being petty cos he don’t like the dude’s philosophies, Savant is literally a standout reliable dude… keeps his promises, has never betrayed anybody… he’s just a calculated talented loner dude… run away if the pairing goes bad? He’s not betrayed anyone ever in the entirety of the series and they’ve been through lots of life or deaths scenarios.

Isaac Lung

It seems likely that Nat will fulfil the three other requirements and become an insanely powerful champion the instant his tutorial ends to combat Adrian

Fdrugc

"5, 10, 20, it does not matter that much, honestly. But it is interesting to think about." What do the numbers mean?

Primo

My take is that Nat actually likes Savant because he is a no BS, reliable ally and fun to poke at, it was also hinted he has stuff to protect on earth so doubt he will feed into the "coward" stereotype that readers seem to think is true now because he refused to duel black mana nat to the death which is ridiculous 😅 Also he prob is the most talented earth attendee he just not pushing himself crazily because he is alone and has to be cautious and patient...

Isaac Lung

This might be the only litrpg I’ve read where the system implements a mechanic for character development

Griffin Boustead

I wonder how often nat thinks back to lissandras display of mana

Thien T

"The third requirement is to become a master of your subclass." How fitting would it be if Nat achieves this in a face to face meeting with Pride himself. ...like looking at a mountain a trillion times higher than the Mt Everest, with scores of bodies from previous challengers littering the ground and everyone telling you: "Conquering this mountain is impossible" And Nat just goes like: "Aight, bet."

Skye

Nah i doubt it. I think he'll go for absolute, but not earth's

Michael Williams

Hmm, those seem like high requirements for becoming a champion. I also thought they would be a little lower considering nat has seemingly fought low level champions already? Level 85 in 5 skills is a lot.

Sammot

Okay! A champion is stronger than we thought according to these requirements!

Thien T

Lies and slander fabricated by the nefarious Ruler of Diligence to cover up the fact that he is the mastermind behind this entire mess just to create the opportunity of forcing some poor innocent Tutorial Attendees to steal corporate secrets for him.

tyhuko

How many Champions there are per planet

Kaladin

Curious to see how far Nat can get before his tutorial ends. A few more floors and beyonds sixth floor at least. Will he be hard pressed on time at all? He still has the tutorial/beyond visit token for once his official tutorial ends. I wonder how quickly Adrian can become a champion or absolute after the tutorial ends. Is he 'officially' a champion currently? Is there any reason for him to stay in Earth versus going back to his original planet?

Nemesis

I am just wondering how big the cliff Cerim is preparing for us with his upcoming mid-book break is

Predyca

Give him some credit! I'll bet Nathaniels white arm that Savi would put his life on the line for earth!

J W

Pairings allow for faster growth. He wants to stay on earth.

U

Never, that's Reminisceniel's job

Arnon Parenti

Savi is the OP MC of every other litrpg story out there pulling stunts out of his hat to win tournaments he has no right to attend.

granndfunk

What is even going on lol. Is there something specific they're all waiting for? It's been a few chapters so I forget

James Lavender

It's not even that unrealistic tbf, anyone who climbs Everest is climbing past the bodies of people who failed, yet they still decide that they can do it despite that. Why not Nat

Nobyys

Waiting for some things to turn bad and just completing the "quest" given by diligence in the meantime. Some crazy shit might happen when lissandra takes back her clone's mana heart. After all, there's not much nat can do, a lot of champions, absolutes, and lissandra and her wyvern are here

j km

A level 85 skills - “5 level 85 skills”

Andromeda

This seems to directly contradict what the professor told nat earlier that champion's skills start at level 80. Why do they need to be 85 now?

Nate 3000

This might be a difference between being NAMED champion and earning it through the system? Kind of like how Nat could have been an Absolute candidate earlier had he not wanted the system to acknowledge it.

Carly

“If my corgi had wheels, he’d be a bike.” This make me giggle way to loud this early in the morning😂

Shmeb

If if if if my mom had balls she would be my dad

Primo

Think Nat having the perfect counter for that reanimated champion skewed our views on champs a lot, and reanimated beings are even weaker than the real deal too

Primo

Think Nat can go all the way to 8th beyond floor if other earth members grow as fast as him as christophe said he needed more people to clear the 7th floor when he had champion level power already, Think christophe is already a champion too in title if not the earth absolute already it's just a formality for him and he is already fighting absolutes that are ruler vessels 😅

dee's page of pages

IF MY GRANDMA HAD WHEELS, SHE'D BE A BIKE!!! it's a different recipe its... agh!!!

Matt Corcoran

I feel like Nat is one of the few people that really understands Savant. Most of Savants interactions with others seems fake and calculated, but he doesn't have to do that "unnecessary" social stuff with the mana daddy. The same with Tacita. There is always an underlying layer of "we might fight to the death" one day, but there is a reason those two insanely strong people end up around Nat so much.

granndfunk

Calm before the storm, I guess

Jason Pyle

I took that to mean a Champion's skills are typically all 80 or greater but to be a Champion, 5 skills need to be 85 or above.

John

Where does nat know the requirements to become a champion know from?

John

Yess i agree, there must be easier ways to become a champion - cannot be that they al went through a tutorial and are all masters in the subclass. same goes for 5 skills at level 85 - seems like these higher requirements are only for tutorial atendees

John

So these 4 requiremwnts are only for tutorial atendees i guess. (otherwise you cannot finnish it) and i guess other champions can be weaker, not having as highrequirements as the system gives for atendees

John

I think this is only for tutorial atendees, lkke the system quest for it. other people or means must grant it to you more easily

John

Im sure not all champions fufill these requirements, very sure even. it might be the requirements for atnedees that are higher than normal

Andrew

Thank you!

Skye

???

conkerer

I don't think so, evolved traits and high tier skills and pristine equipment seem mid to late champion stuff, and Nat would have had level 85 skills many books ago if he didn't keep combining away his skills over and over. If Nat focused on getting the requirements for Champion first before anything else he would probably be there 1-2 books ago.

Tishane :Imperial MageKiller

I love Nat and Savants friendship it reminds me of one of my friends 😅😂 he's always getting me into some shit when I show up and I love it and hate it at the same time.

Memelord Steambath

I dont think savy has much of a fight against nat after nat beat him in the first tournament. Nats power level has gone through the roof since then

mulchymulcher

It makes sense that the ferret from the 9th floor would be afraid of demons, or anyone who resembles them too closely, but why would Fuci feel that way? Isn't he *just* a descendant?

Psyren1596

Unless there is some hidden prodigy bullshit cerim pulls out of his ass then yeah I agree with you 😂

Chun

But what about the requirement to complete the tutorial being one of them? Seems like it wouldn’t be there explicitly if that wasn’t the case in the first place.

Isaac Lung

- no primary class rarity requirement - no active skill grade requirement Average champions like the one Nat killed on B5 can reach champion in level 85 in weak skills like fireball or mana blast with an epic class at level 450 and rare-epic passives. Whereas strong champions and future absolutes like A and S ranks have higher grade skills and epic-pristine class and epic-pristine passives. And then there’s anomalies like Nat and Nyssa.

Isaac Lung

Obviously champions born after the tutorial wouldn’t have tutorial completion requirement. But the other three requirements aren’t as hard as you make it out to be since there’s no rarity requirement for the primary class and no grade requirement for the skill. Getting master of subclass is doable with enough life experience.

Isaac Lung

The requirement to complete tutorial is likely only there because he’s an attendee. So that makes only three requirements for people born after the tutorial/not selected for it.

XP_TOPshelf

I think we have been slightly desensitized to how powerful champions are. We are just used to Aurathaniel who calls someone a casual if they aren't capable of covering a city in a domain of mana.

Primo

Maybe he just did not recognize lilly anymore and removed himself from a person he did not know

thisisniall

The tutorial requirement is probably better phrased as “cannot become a Champion while still in the tutorial” - obviously champions can come from future generations who aren’t tutorial eligible. Nat actually has only fought a handful of “true” champions - the heavily weakened ones in the Astral Prison and the thylarin lurker on Beyond’s 5th floor. Hes also definitely fought some stuff that was post-450 but not a Champion. The thylarin lurker was the closest thing to a strait fight - except it was Nat and a whole bunch of demons, including Morwag and Weslin, against a mana regeneration focused champion - basically Nats single best matchup. And some A rank demons still got killed in that one, despite hints we’ve seen that lurkers are weaker than their original counterparts. (e.g. Lioren vs Whitey)

John

Skye, i mean did the system say this, or ruby, or some merchant? usually we are provided with the source of the info

John

ch632 - "There are skills I am sure I’ll be able to push past level 80, where Champions typically have their abilities. A few, I believe, could even break through level 90 and enter the realm of Absolutes, and then further. [Manifestation]... I’m not sure. At level 90 and beyond, that skill must be insane."

John

i think nat got too lowerful too quickly (fine by me), and cerim had to adjust the powerlevel for champions - but i still think lower requiremwnt would not hurt the power of champions, since its only the start...

Kirin

Thank you for the chappie!

Nobyys

I believe it was said by the vessels that they were not that strong by themselves but had a high level of compatibility to channel the strength of Ruby. But even then they were still absolutes, so Adrian is definitely on the high end of the champion level scale

wolf Bound

Tbf the champions fought in the tutorial are scaled down quite a lot just like the absolutes in the tutorials. Same with the rulers you meet in the floors.

wolf Bound

I like savi same with my girl taci both are great and have very interesting builds. They will become very strong champions to protect earth in the future. Champions probably stronger than most absolutes if I’m being honest.

frozzi

Bullshit, you pulled that straight from your imagination. There is zero proof about anyone except Lissandra being nerfed.

Matthew Hay

How did Cristophe satisfy Nat's Absolute Candidacy quest to face an unweakened Champion for 10 seconds, if he needed to complete the tutorial first to become a Champion? Was that requirement broken because of his reincarnation?

Nemesis

I wonder if you have to be a champion to become an Absolute, or if you can just go from nothing to Absolute as long as you are strong enough

Kenny

Worth mentioning, the Thylarin be fought on Beyonds 5th floor was not a lurker, it was also explicitly stated they are all full powered champions.

Michael Williams

This is what I was thinking of. He was doing exceptionally well against that champion. And may have been able to 1v1. Yeah he was specifically countering this one, but he was also below level 400 at the time if memory serves? Will be interesting to see the variation in champions once we start seeing our attendees start becoming them vs champions of other worlds for example.

Lance Beam

TFTC. I’m relieved that we now know definitely the criteria for becoming a Champion.

Ivan Jelenić

Maybe he will become Earth's Absolute.

Ivan Jelenić

It shouldn't be hard for him to know as the guildmaster of the strongest guild, Liss' minion, and a rich guy. It would be much weirder for him not to know it, at this point.

Ivan Jelenić

It was "Champion level being" iirc, not "Champion".

John

@Ivan, it is plausible that he knows - i would still like to know from where, as it makes a difference. Like if a merchant or Liss/ruby or just some atendee told him. Maybe he has a quest offerd by the system itself

Ian

This is an easy one, and even 2 weeks later I see no one has mentioned it. 5 skills at 85 and above is insane for a champion in the modern era. 5 skills at 85 and above is something even a house pet could do in Lissandra's day if they wanted to become a champion.

Arch Fiend

I'm sure you can go straight to absolute especially if you have the title of absolute candidate and the first absolutes were probably never champions.

thisisniall

UPDATE: On Royal Road this was changed to 3 skills over 85 rather than 5.
