Here's another Bonus Bit, where I try and articulate the difference between the sound of the Mixolydian mode and the sound of 'Mode Mixture', which is a separate compositional technique. Hope you enjoy it!

BONUS BIT #2: what Mixolydian isn't

In this one I try to make a distinction between Mode Mixture as a compositional tool and the use of the Mixolydian mode, two sounds which are easy to mistake for each other.

I loved that! You're super right about modes not being created equal - that was my key takeaway from this. Lydian only needs one note to "sound lydian" but a flat 7 is a part of aeolian, dorian, phrygian, mixo, blues, and the L mode we dont say out loud :) It requires a lot more nuance to bring the sound out. Thank you for your insights!

You're too self critical! The reasoning is sound and these types of discussions are just fun and not "old man yells at cloud" because there's nothing truly important involved, just opinions on how to interpret music (: I enjoyed this and didn't think it was ranty, thanks for doing these!!

Loved your breakdown of Aerith's Theme, one of my favourites! <3 I've been playing it a lot and didn't think to analyze it.

Good video! Distinctions are important and I think the ones you're making in the video are worthwhile. Pedantry to me usually means one is being specific in a way to make things complicated and obfuscated, or to just feel smarter than people. But here, you're trying to help clarify things by being specific; trying to give folks terms and concepts to help them write the kind of sounds they hear. I appreciate the robust defense of these music theory concepts!

Thanks guys! Guess I fell on the right side of the divide between needlessly nitpicky and interestingly nitpicky!
