Bonus Bit #5: The REAL Desert Scale

I always kinda had it in my head that the Phrygian mode was used as the generic desert scale, but looking at real life examples of game music taught me how wrong I was. Enjoy!

I love this scale. It's also called the freygish scale and it's common in klezmer music. Thanks for the video!

Bass part immediately reminded me of the same from Dusty Dune Galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy, which of course is also a desert stage lol. Could mostly be from similarities in the rhythm. I haven't got the know-how to tell myself if Dusty Dune is also Phrygian, but I suppose both pieces as a whole do sound pretty similar, though Dusty Dune is a bit more sparse

You freaking rock my man, thank you for everything you do <3 .

I think the bonus bits playlist post got deleted? I just got an email about it but the link is dead.

Yes, I only found out after posting it that you can only pin one post to the top of the page. I figure the transcription link is more important to pin but I've tagged all the old Bonus Bits so you can hit the 'Bonus Bits' tag at the top of the Patreon page and it should show you all of the ones posted so far

This was awesome! I too had a vague understanding that the Phrygian scale was 'the desert one' so I learned a lot here!

When the a is still sharp the first time in the melody it's just f# Dorian. The second time when you see the flat second, the raised sixth and the major third all in the same melody I would just call that flat 2 mixolydian (in the spirit of it sounding Mario lol). You could also call it the fifth mode of harmonic major or the inverse harmonic minor if you really wanted to get freaky. Glad you did this because I always hear people reference Phrygian as deserty sounding and for me it's not a true desert theme if it doesn't visit that major third at some point lol

I do love the Phrygian dominant. Very cool bonus bit, thanks!

THE phrygian dominant scale All jokes aside, I remember learning about that in my college classes when my teacher was talking about modes. It's fun stuff.

I remember hearing this called "Spanish Phrygian". Maybe that's like saying "Sumerian Roman", but it does make me think of "La Fiesta".
