My FAVOURITE Soundtrack?? The Frog for Whom the Bell Tolls || ONLY IN JAPAN

Japan only GameBoy title "Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru", or "The Frog for Whom the Bell Tolls", features one of my favourite game soundtracks of all time. Written by the legendary Kazumi Totaka, the music hits this perfect middle ground of melodicism, unique and colourful harmony, and thematic unity that really hits me. Follow along as I breakdown some of my favourite tracks and get into how Totaka worked around the limitations of the GameBoy soundchip when writing this great work! FYI, you note that the game is popular because the characters return in subsequent games. What’s really interesting is that the engine for The Frog for Whom the Bell Tolls was extended and further developed to become the engine that ran Link’s Awakening, so they’re essentially sibling games. Musically, they’re like sequels.

Thank you so much for the Kazumi Totaka appreciation! He's been one of my favorite composers for a long time; it's always nice to see more people celebrate his peculiar quirky style. Hopefully more people will be inspired by his work with this video!
