New bonus bit, getting into some nitty gritty chord voicing stuff. I'm realizing now that I still haven't finished Bonus Bit #14! Eep! That'll be coming soon, too. Enjoy!

Bonus Bit #16: The maj11 chord

In this one I take a look at what a true "Ionian Chord" might look like, how to build it, and question its general usefulness.

I liked this one. :) Your proposed C FABE voicing feels like a maj7sus chord to me, in that it seems to want to pull to C EGBD. (I probably feel this way because G FABE is such a go-to G13 voicing. Which would mean this is indeed analogous to your Mozart example!) But I don't think that's unexpected if we want to sound the entire Ionian mode; minor ninth avoidance leads us to stick the third on top, and that's still technically a valid thing to do with a sus chord. If we take away sevenths and extensions, it's not unlike C FGE. Which actually is a rather pretty way to trail off...

Thanks! I also enjoyed all the videos you did on the modes - it's how I first found your channel, actually. Will be looking forward to the video about the melodic minor. (Or any other videos on the modes, haha. I really liked the bonus bit you did about the phrygian dominant scale.)

Your resolving to Cmaj11 chord felt surprisingly satisfying to me, I was surprised you didn't agree! :O (I understand music is taste though)

The last "maj11" is actually maj13.

It is, but if you see a maj13 chord symbol you assume there’s no 11. But at the same time, writing maj13(add11) feels redundant. That’s why I went with maj11
