The Wii Shop Theme can teach you Jazz Harmony

The Wii Shop Theme is, surprisingly, a perfect example of the fundamentals of jazz harmony. It's also just a total banger. 0:00 - "Elevator Music" / the Bossa Nova style 3:28 - Wii Shop Theme 4:01 - Beautiful Upper Extensions / the 7-6 move 5:19 - ii V I voice leading 8:20 - 3+7 voice leading in the Wii Shop Theme 12:38 - How Jazz Melodies Work 14:44 - The Rootless ii V I 16:18 - Outro PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/8bitmusictheory Check out my album: https://8bitmt.bandcamp.com/album/lets-play DISCORD: https://discord.gg/8bmt TWITTER: https://twitter.com/8bitMusicTheory #wii #gamemusic #8bitMusicTheory

What a great analysis! I particularly enjoyed the discussion of jazz alterations as driven by voice-leading before decoration. I'm a longtime jazz listener and classical player just starting down the road of trying to become a jazz player as well, so these kinds of insights are really appreciated. I admit I was a little disappointed by the absence of two things I expected you to mention -- first, that Nintendo has kind of made Afro-Cuban/Brazilian jazz a major part of their brand, going back to all those jazz fusion records influencing Koji Kondo for his Mario soundtracks. And second, that while it is way less memed, the Wii also brought us the Mii Channel music, another bossa nova that also gives us slinky strings and a sparse arrangement with (I think) a lot of cool implied harmony! Another great video, thanks for all the work you put into these!

This video originally started out as covering the Wii Shop and Mii channel music together, but by the length of the video on just the Wii Shop alone I'm sure you can guess what happened there!
