Hello everybody

We wanted to wait until we had heard back from Rebecca Goodwin before we made any comment about the situation.

Today, we have heard back from Rebecca. She has accepted our apology and she has thanked us for a donation we made to Rape Crisis England & Wales, which we made last week.

We really, really let Rebecca down with this. Roast jokes like this are only ever okay with the explicit consent of those targeted. Vittorio should have got that consent. We assumed that he did. We should not have assumed anything. That is our fuck up. With that fuck up, we let Rebecca down and we let you lot down.

We’re really sorry for any upset this has caused any of you.

Comments

Zak

much love ❤️❤️

Jamie giles

Why has it only surfaced a year later, I’m confused

Kyle Serrao

Fair play lads. You live and learn. Rebecca has accepted the apology. Case closed. ❤️

Taylor Hunter

Love you guys! Water under the bridge and you’ve made the correct steps to make this better! Up the Lids! Up HAW🟠🔵

Craig

What's this all about was it on an episode

Jake Byrne

I’ve seen enough, deduct Everton 2 points

Mark Duff

Brilliant response boys

Leigh

Welcome to the chat Neil

Simon King

I think you guys have squarely been caught in the crossfire here unfairly .. how this comes about 12 months on is beyond me.. i hope everyone can just move on from it

reid

love you lids

Craig Conway

Was it before or after she threw up all over the stage?

Liam R

Just hope everyone can move forward now.

Jack White

Hopefully this is the end of this. We’ve all learnt a valuable lesson and fingers crossed we can all move on.

Josh

Things behind a paywall should stay behind a paywall. Then nobody gets offended

Charles Short

Dealt with this perfectly fellas, well played

Josh Clarke

You can’t ask for much more than that. Another example of what top lads you are 👏🏻

Adam T

The UK comedy scene has been a hellscape for the last week after Vittorio put out screenshots of a joke from the Roast. If you don’t know about it, I’d avoid it all now

Peter Tomlinson

Well considered and measured response, hopefully as time heals, everyone involved will be able to reflect and move on and be back at their brilliant best soon. X

Chris

Because vittorio posted it on his own Instagram

Katie McLoughlin

So important that you addressed this. Thank you 🩷

Thom Stott

There was a joke which got out onto Instagram and a lot of people found it offensive

Spencer

Vittorio shared it online, himself.

Aidan Middleton

Well said, I wasn’t sure how the pod would address this or even how they should. However I think the above is the correct response.

Sam Albert

Fair play the fellas … as much as I think it was dragged on n exaggerated to the max, yous have done the right thing. The best set of lads with the best intentions, to make people laugh, that’s all you / vettorio tried too do. Big up the lids

Craig

That's my thought exactly

anonymous

it was only ever on patreon, it went on vittorios instagram and that’s when it’s come to light that rebecca goodwin never knew it was said or going to be said until it was made public on his instagram

Scott Mitchell

Don’t spend 24/7 on social media pal

Olly Chapman

Vittorio got a lot of backlash after his joke mentioning Rebecca Goodwin went viral. Both him and Sloss have had a lot of negative feedback online as a result. For context watch Rebecca’s recent TikTok’s and Daniel sloss’s recent instagram post

Garry

Absolutely no need. There is no fuck up from anyone…

Charlie

Initially behind a paywall and everyone involved believed there was consent > Vittorio shared it on insta and Rebecca saw it/mentioned she wasn’t there and wasn’t in on it.

Daniel Salmon

I thought that, I was at that roast and couldn’t comprehend how this is only becoming an issue now. I’m guessing it’s Vittorio and his clips but still doesn’t make sense to me

Richard Brown

The exact , succinct explanation and apology that I assumed would come. Well done lids.

Cameron Davidson

Short, simple and meaningful, thats all you boys can do. Great that you have had a say in this, hopefully we can all just move on now 😎

Landry

Hope you and everyone else are still getting on. Been a right shit show

Jordan Harris

Thank you guys for addressing, excellent lids as always ❤️

Meganne

This is the perfect apology, you've accepted accountability, apologised to those who have been upset but have not back downed on your beliefs with regard to humour. Not everyone will be happy with this but I think it's fair enough.

Charlie

Was on the Roast special they released last year

C Jbee

These things happen boys. Fair play to you; despite this I don’t think Vittorio is a villain, there’s tons of comedians capable of thinking up or making that joke, and it just so happens that he’s been the one to do it; it doesn’t make it okay, but it wasn’t made with the intention of hurting Rebecca, just without the consideration that it might. Keep doing your thing.

Leigh

Clearly that joke was lost on you….seems quite apt really 🙄 happy Monday sweetheart 😘

Hennerz

No need to apologise.. Vittorio's fuck up

Lou

🧡🧡🧡

Ben

Same here

Vick

Same, I’m glad I’m not the only one wondering if something else had happened because surely it’s not a call back from yonks ago. I didn’t wanna be called a Neil tho for not knowing 😂

Katie

After. About 12 months after, as it was a different event she wasn't at.

Duncan

Hey, I might be wrong, bit I think that's part of the whole problem. She appeared in Roast 2 but not in Roast 3. Roast 3 is where the clip came from. She wasn't there when the joke was made and only found out when it was released on Vitto's socials recently.

Adam Probbing

Vittorio made the main error with not checking. Minor error from you guys not checking. You guys have apologised and made a gesture with significance to her, fair enough. Also hope this doesn't stop Vittorio's rise too much. Made a very rookie error not checking consent and absolutely deserves to be called out for that, but let's hope he learns from it in the future and is allowed to move forwards in the future

Seddon1151

End of the day if your told he got approval then how are you meant to know. Its vito fuck up for posting it on socials that type of joke should never reach such public platform. He has bought all this heat on everyone that didnt deserve the heat. Much love lids

Jen Swan

I'm guessing Rebecca just wasnt aware of it until some of her followers sent her the clips recently

Eliot Jude

Love you boys you're brilliant

Sam Collard

A good statement, but please post this beyond the Patreon.

Matthew Wood

I guess it’s a case of comedians getting a list of permissions/signatures in future. You live and you learn. Onwards and upwards for Have a Word, it’s something that you can take forward if you do create your own version of live at the Apollo.

Gabby

You didn’t let us down boys I hope you have heard our voices of support through this difficult time Love to all the HAW boys and all the lid army xxx

Craig

Is that why she walked off

Emma Cairns

Because Vittorio took the clip from behind the paywall (Patreon) and shared it publicly on Instagram… it went viral within hours. HAW were absolutely caught in the crossfire, but they should’ve confirmed consent for the jokes that were going to be made. It’s a hard line to find and not cross

Jamie giles

So Rebecca is pissed off cos it went beyond the paywall? Or about the joke itself, I’m confused

Quadbod

I think I assumed that it all would have been run through with the victims beforehand. All you can do after the fact is what you have done. I will not be cancelling my subscription just yet .

Glen

Based on this apology the premier league have deducted Everton 20 points

Jack Meade

<3 Never doubted you lids for a second. Maybe we can hope to see Rebecca back on the pod one day., or at least she can continue to heal now.

Jordan E

First time chatter, long term lid. To play devil's advocate on people who wanted this statement sooner (Insert Adam's crap Al Pachino impression here)...I can understand that they aren't looking to appease the wider audience that aren't actually fans, or people they may or may not have offended outside of our patreon bubble. I do believe that if there was enough noise from us Lids when the video was originally released, then it would have been discussed, addressed and handled sooner. This statement and Sloss's are pretty much bang on, but the HAW boys will most likely come under a bit more scrunity than Daniel as they have a lot of people against them already, purely for the type of comedy they do. They most likely feel let down by lots of people. Obviously one main person in particular, but perhaps with a little more time, they can lower the number of leeches attaching themselves to the conversation and talk directly to the people they care about and the people that actually want to hear them out. Not an excuse or a validation, just a side of the arguement as to why a statement may not have been made earlier.

James Inman

It’s the other comedians that are virtue signalling trying to attack have a word and hot water comedy club as well that take away from the actual situation that has already been addressed by those directly involved

Jen Swan

Vittorio should have got consent for the joke. Thats literally all anyone did wrong

JB

Respect for speaking up.

Joe Taylor

Hasn’t Finn made a lovely apology

Jj

You’re miles off it

Davie Snooker

Nope. The reason that VA and now HAW have all apologised is because they never did the right thing by Rebecca. Everyone involved has confirmed and accepted this. The paywall position should not be used as a defence for it being acceptable.

Sean

2 isnt enough, easily 10

Garry

Can you actually explain to me if you need consent for a joke. He got it, cause it was aimed at Freddie Quinn?

Naomi Mitchell

Hopefully now we can move on to other topics in this chat!

Ross Cameron

I didn’t think it needed a statement to this group but if there was one, I kind of thought it would have been crafted/worded betters than this.

David Costello

I know this was a HAW event but surely this is between Vittorio Sloss and Rebecca. And as long as Rebecca is ok thats all that matters. Get her back on when her case is resolved.

Craig

That's why I'm tryna find out🤣

Joe T

Are you going to apologise to Rebecca? I already have, in a way... so...

Meganne

Have a day off 😂

Thom Stott

Although you are right, that joke was in the context to a roast and there were warnings at the start of the special that you only hear if you watch the whole thing. I believe this whole thing would of had much less impact if everyone that’s been offended has the context of the whole roast

Leeanne Cayton

Never thought for one second you knew vittorio hadn't run it past Rebecca. Love you boys

Mike Butler

Neil will be well angry when he hears about this in 2 years

Dex

Well thats vito under the wheels of the bus then

Oksana bajut the Ukrainian tute

Check Kaii Humphries ig post, he explains roast etiquette. The joke was to Freddy, but Rebecca was the punchline

Rick

A roast is a roast.

Peter Gallagher

Aren't roasts supposed to be highly inappropriate, offensive and hurtful comments? If the comments have to be pre approved or censored then that's a bit tame isn't it? Surely if you agree to be in an actual 'roast' you have already put yourself forward to be torn to bits by whatever anyone chooses to say. 🤷 It's sad you guys have to bend to this nonsense.

Josh

I completely get this and agree, but if you think about every comedian making jokes in clubs and on specials etc, if they had to get permission from everyone it’d first of all take up most of their time and second, there’d be no permissions granted, so no jokes.

Odin Bourne

Well done guys, now let's get back talking nonsense

Matthew

This is victim blaming, and a complete misunderstanding of the situation. The problem is the jokes being made about SA and rape. Do better.

David Furphy

She didn’t know about it until Vittorio posted it on Instagram

Harv

The biggest own goal ever by Vito. He’s taken himself out of the lineup while everyone else is taking the heat which is sly

Garry

And so what? I asked do you actually have to have consent from the punchline? You certainly don’t get it from the likes of Prince Andrew yet he can be a funny punchline?

Davie Snooker

Taking responsibility this way was probably the only correct action. It’s been done properly, it’s a (harsh) lesson learned it was the best way for everyone to move forward.

Josh

100% agreed. People also don’t know the close relationship that Freddie and Rebecca had, so it made sense to use her name… in bad taste out of context but as you said, if you people watched the entire thing they would understand it

Katie Thornton

Garry there is something very wrong with you, and I don’t mean that you spell your name with two r’s.

Teigan Bailey

I genuinely cant believe it either, and I’m not being funny the jokes they make on this pod and all the specials they really shouldn’t be singled out for one joke. She was on the couch last year laughing and making jokes about it herself so i don’t know how she dares…

Rae

Prince Andrew isn't a rape victim

Eddie2me

Well said. Straight to the point. Addressed all that needed to be said and nothing more

GazLoz

Well in HAW team x

Garry

All I did was ask questions. Why not enlighten me rather than be rude.

Emma Cairns

Rebecca was raped over a year ago, she has not been supported by police, despite having video and audio evidence of the attack. she made the decision to go public with her ordeal and the treatment thereafter. This joke, was not only in poor taste but very poorly timed. Rebecca took part in Roast 2 and consented to All the jokes written about her, when she left the stage around 10/20 minutes into filming Daniel Sloss chose to remove the jokes he’d written about her. Vittorio made this joke in roast 3, the HAW team assumed that the joke had been consented to by Rebecca, it had not. Vittorio then took the clip and shared it a tear later, during a point when Rebecca is very vocal about the violent treat of women and girls and her own treatment/assault.

Rae

The viewers were warned yes, but Rebecca wasn't.

Davie Snooker

Actually that’s a fair point. When it was taken out of that context, any warnings and preemptive disclosures were removed. And I do actually agree with that now you point it out. Suppose with that context, certain targets will be considered going forward but you’re right.

Garry

And? Does it have to be a rape joke to get consent ?

Jake Dewson

Good on you lads, Proud to be a Lid knowing that you took responsibility for what happened, Keep being the legends we know you are

Alex

You living under a rock pal

David Furphy

If it’s punching down or the person is close proximity then yes you should absolutely get consent and I imagine if vittorio had tried to get consent it would not have been granted

Michael Lawrence

Roasts aren't my favourite tbh - i find they're low hanging fruit American style humour and I guess the size of HAW is now just opens up too many chances for things like this to happen.

Jack Phillips

If you put it behind a pay wall, great. But if you give Vittorio the ok to use the clip, you know he'll use them.

Craig

Must be

Shelly

She wasn't there to agree to the "joke",that's the point.

Garry

Thanks for explaining your point of view. I still see plenty of jokes everyday that punch down to a variety of people, which definitely did not have consent. I now understand where people are coming from however. Thankyou

Ross Cameron

Rebecca wasn’t part of the roast when the joke was made.

Simon

It’s the game you play when you make specials where the point of it is to be as shocking as possible, including jokes about people that aren’t in the room. I’ve watched and enjoyed all of the roasts you’ve done but at no point has it been suggested that the butt of the joke always gives consent. I don’t think you assumed Freddie had got permission from Diogo Jota’s wife to joke about him either etc etc etc I was never particularly offended by the joke in the first place but to hide behind ‘we assumed Vittorio had got consent from Rebecca’ feels like a bit of a cop out to cover your own backs

Chloe Haworth

Thank you for doing the right thing 💕

Liam

Well said lads, maybe just stick to roasting people in the room from now on, that way you know for sure everyone is happy with everything said love you lids 🧡

Richard Bicknell

Pleased to hear Rebecca accepted the apology, that's very kind of her considering what happened

Michael Holleran

Because Vittorio decided to post it a year later for some reason and she was shown it.

Rae

She wasn't part of it though, it's a different roast to the one she attended, she's also in the middle of a rape trial and pregnant

Ashleigh Kay

So pleased you boys have addressed this. ❤️

Jack

Well done lads 🧡

charlotte chapman

Totally agree. Only HAW should be able to release clips from it

Michael Holleran

That’s the point. SHE was making the joke. If Vittorio had asked her and she said ok that would have been fine. It was meant to be a joke at Freddie’s expense that she got dropped into without her knowledge. She had literally just reported someone for rape so bad timing.

rob

Well they aren't going to do another one now so you're in luck

Simon Weaver

The perpetrator is 99 times out of 100 the person being punch line. This was one of the times the 1 was the punch line. I don’t think that’s hard to understand mate

Luke Payne

Performative outrage on her behalf. She has joked and laughed about that very topic on Dead Men multiple times. A little disappointed you lads didn't stand by Vittorio on this one. A joke is a joke, especially at a roast show ffs. Worst part is, the brunt of the joke was aimed at Freddie.

Luke Chandler

Like if you was one inch inside your mum and your dad was one inch inside of you..

Simon Weaver

Different roast. The third one. She was at the second

Amy

Next weeks chip paper boys! Hating the backlash yous are getting and Sloss! 🧡💙

Keano

I really do think im missing something here and im being honest. I have seen this lady, RG, make many jokes about this and laugh at Rob Mulhollamd and Freddie Quinnes awful jokes and remarks and there was no way they got permission to do so every time. Vitorrio, from what I can see is a very nice, courteous and conscientious comedian. He definitely didnt do this to upset or hurt her. He obviously fucked up but just because a huge comedian, Sloss, is attached to this, this is why theres outrage. Saying sorry when you mean it and when you know you have made a mistake should be enough if you are doing these roasts with real friends. There should be no ill intent towards anybody and I dont think Dan, Adam, Carl, Sloss, Vittorio or anybody associated personally with the podcast would intentionally hurt a soul. Do you people know that there are people out there raping and abusing people and they aint treated like this. Its ridiculous. A mistake was made, everyone apologised and nobody tried to justify it. Its awful that this day in age that a comedy roast is not seen as intended. Fun and in good nature. If you cant take the cruel jokes then dont associate with it, thats fine. I hope everyone is ok and the abusers out there get whats coming to them, not comedians or whatever it is that young lady does. Everone deserves respect and peace of mind.

Rob Lambert

I actually really feel for everyone at Have A Word and every other comic at the roast because you all rightly assumed that he got consent first. You shouldn't need to do that, especially with so many comics, so many jokes etc. Based on that, as much as I'm sure it wasn't done with malice, it does 100% fall solely on Vittorio.

Iain

Great response. Hopefully that’s the end of that and everyone can move on

Codie

Love you lids 🧡

rob

By "we hadn't checked' you mean "Ste hadn't checked" Ruining specials left right and centre

Cheese

Good reply, would deffo put this on the instagram story as most of the people annoyed about it won’t be patreons

RUMPINKO

What have I missed?

Shelley

I hope use dont get fucked up in this. Youre all great, the roasts are dodgy and treading on mental grounds but youre all great and hope it can all be sorted for everyone involved. 🧡

Anna Hamilton

Why did this absolutely kill me😂😂

Anna Hamilton

Can we move on from it now 🥱 Don’t think the lads had anything to apologise for other than vittorio.

Dex

That was my thought exactly - please can we have confirmation of that lads? Because otherwise its abit of a cop out excuse

Lizzie

From what I’ve seen, the main issues are that she didn’t know the joke was being made and didn’t know about it until Vitto shared it on insta last week. She’s also said she doesn’t know him very well. So it’s like a friend of a friend joking about her trauma, which is where it’s different from her making jokes about it herself or with Freddie/Rob who I believe she considered to be friends.

Cameron Bennett

To be fair it’s not their fault he’s been a shit bag and not just admitted he didn’t get permission from her to talk about it, put the blame back on himself for his own joke rather than putting everyone else there in the firing line for criticism from everywhere over something they had no control over. He has shot himself in the foot massively

Eefs

Well said

Dan Smith

Except that's not how it works Rob, they produced it, they're responsible for it. It's how any piece of published media works.

Joe Hill

Piss poor response.

Eefs

Not one of these comedians exploiting the situation to score brownie points comes close to being half the man Vittorio is. Having watched him challenge Penny Mordaunt on live TV, knowing full well it could be to his own detriment, I think he’s earned more than a little grace from me.

Nath

The difference is that she consented in those instances to be the topic of the joke. She didn’t consent to a joke she never knew had happened, about her assault that was then laughed at by a bunch of people that she considered her friends

Jon Parkinson

Apologies sent personally to Rebecca , then apologised to everyone on here when also donating to a charity. What more can they do , they will of learnt from the errors made and improve in the future

Me Mum Meg

Well done for putting out such an honest and heartfelt statement. It takes courage to acknowledge when you’ve got something wrong, take responsibility, and apologise without making excuses. The fact that you’ve listened, recognised the hurt caused, and taken steps to make amends deserves credit. Nobody gets everything right all the time, but how you respond when you get things wrong really matters. 👏

Luke Payne

If we had to get consent over every passing comment we ever made, comedy wouldn't exist. She's in the public eye, she's made public jokes on the very topic in hand, she put herself in this position. False outrage for publicity, shocking from an OF girl I know.

Dex

Think the point is, she associates with freddie and rob, who regularily make jokes that many would consider cross the line. She has been on their pod multiple times as mentioned. It does kinda stink of its all fun and games if they are aiming it at someone else - which seems somewhat hypocritical

Brad

???

Kat Gitts

They acknowledged they fucked up. They acknowledge Rebecca personally before putting anything out. Trying to make amends with donation. Everyone fucks up, some minor some royally and some repeatedly. From being a Patreon we have all seen these men champion rights of those downtrodden. Yes they’ve made jokes it’s a comedy podcast. But there are far worse people out there, let’s put the energy of hate that people have put on the lads onto those actually doing harm in the world. Well done lads proud to be a female Patreon.

Rob Lambert

I suppose. But you know what I mean. It's sad it's fallen to them, when really, all comics should have got the relevant permissions beforehand.

Gabby

I know this is an important issue and I’m very glad and happy that apologies have been accepted However, for the love of Christ can we please get back to talking about big hairy bum holes and utter nonsense please

Sam Johnson

You don’t owe anyone an apology, this is a massive overreaction owing to some crossed wires. Albeit vittorio could’ve done a better job in owning it. The faux outrage has been cringeworthy to say the least and the incumbent pile on has been ghastly. People make mistakes and the holier than thou brigade need to back off and look at themselves

Keano

Lads have you checked in with Vittorio too? Glad RG is ok also but I can't imagine for one minute he isn't tormenting himself over this.

Chester Aries

I think it’s a really tough situation. Rebecca has made a lot of uncomfortable jokes about the scenario on multiple podcasts - ones that likely make other victims feel very unhappy. Just because she’s made jokes, doesn’t mean anyone can, but it has left the door ajar for people to test boundaries and she’s been very open to people making jokes. She has every right to change her mind on that, but I don’t necessarily think it’s entirely fair to go after people for jokes that she previously was ok with. Similarly she was involved, to an extent, with a previous roast so she has to know what that entails and how it’s likely to go. I understand Vittorio may not have met her and should have avoided going for someone he doesn’t know, but it does seem a bit harsh to go after him for a (misguided) attempt at a roast joke which are notoriously very crass and go for shock value. Like I say she has every right to change her mind on what she’s comfortable being joked about, but I don’t know if this is the right way to approach it as it feels far more blown up than it could have been. Publications that are saying Vittorio's mocking her current rape trial isn’t right, I don’t think he was doing that at all, but I understand why it would feel more hard hitting to her whilst the trial is ongoing - as always with the press these days, the facts aren’t always represented in the story

A Watson

Do you think if you met her somewhere it would be OK for you to make jokes like that? Obviously she's made them so should be cool for anyone to right?

Katie Thornton

Glad that this has been addressed ❤️ However for the absolute wrongens in these comments still saying they shouldn’t have apologised, slating Rebecca, etc. YOUSE ARE SO WEIRD. Do you think the HAW lads are gonna bum your head in like you clearly want them to??? They let down their friend and now they’ve done what they can to put it right. What any decent men should do. Sorry that they don’t hate women like some of youse.

Ste Wilson

No hate. I'd like to know what RG would of said on her roast

Luke Payne

Am I a professional comedian being paid to be on a roast show? Would i randomly say something about her dad abusing her to her face the first time I met her? Probably not. Would I say abhorrent things about people I know in a room they're not in? Absolutely.

Claire Adams

I hope the roasts don't end :(

Tally

Oh please. Why are you defending a joke that everyone involved has disavowed? Is it THAT important for you to listen to rape jokes about sex workers being assaulted by their parents? You are part of the problem

A Watson

Why not though, a joke is a joke right? Or you're saying someone would have to pay you to say it?

Ste Wilson

Rebecca made the same joke for the last 20 years? All I'm sayin is she was willing do the first roast I'd like to hear her roast....

Jordan Bee

Personally don’t think you guys have anything to apologise about. Just cause it happened on your live show, an event you set up, the blame doesn’t fall on your shoulders. If any fans or patreons were upset with the joke, there should only be 1 person they have a grievance with and that isn’t Have A Word. Keep doing what you’re doing boys… 🤘🏽

Norton

Is that George Clooney?

Norton

Exactly. I don't for one minute think he'd have made the joke, if he thought she'd be upset by it.

Ciaran Boyle

But how is Vittorio? Genuinely....

Shaun

I think it’s poor personally. It’s this Patreon echo chamber that has allowed you to think you can say what you want. I’d be interested to see how this goes down outside of your circle

Luke Payne

Because I dont know her. Would I make that exact same joke to someone I knew? Absolutely I would. IMO, you should just be able to joke like that with strangers but social norms dont allow it. Would I and have I said much worse than anything Vito said? Obviously. Why did absolutely not a soul have an issue with the joke before the performative outrage?! If its such a horrible and offensive joke, why are you still on the Patreon? Why didnt you leave in protest against this evil man making jokes at this poor woman's expense?

Richard McAllister

Nice to throw Vito under the bus there lads, just like your Hot Water pals

Blake

Tormenting himself that he posted it on his socials maybe, he doesn’t give a fuck about RG

Kevin Brown

You lads have been caught in the crossfire and vittorio has made a mistake one not with any malice but you lads have done the scouse thing owned it took it on the chin and made efforts to make it right Rebecca will see that and us lids have your backs through thick and thin

Ben

What do you want them to do? Tell me how you expect them to put this right?

Keano

Shes not gonna ride ye. Calm down....Blake

Cameron Bennett

It’s not consent for every passing comment. It’s consent from a friend to talk bout something deeply traumatic. You think sloss is cool with random fans meeting him in the street talking about his dead sister? Course not but in the context he’s said it’s fine.

Tally

No one saw it because it was behind a paywall. Rebecca only became aware of it after Vittorio posted a screencap the other week. She then broke down in tears on TikTok while discussing it. If you’d actually followed this story, you’d know that and would have seen her video and subsequent comments. It seems you’re the one being 'performatively outraged', defending a joke that even Vittorio himself has apologised for.

Paul

Careful... You'll be doing a public apology next 😂

Ashley Trow

Adam has touched on this before when he did roast battles, the topics of the jokes are run past the other comic and they agree what's on or off limits. So yes the absolutely do get consent and it is censored. So they're not "bending to nonsense" thats how things are done. Also RB wasn't in the roast so she didn't agree to anything said at the roast.

Cerys Griffiths

Everyone sending hate to anyone involved in this situation need to get off their high horse. People think that because comedians have a platform and a following, that they can say whatever they want. Cancel culture is awful and for some bizarre reason people think that someone with a following aren’t able to make mistakes in life. Vittorio should have cleared the joke with Rebecca first but unfortunately he didn’t and it was ignored/forgotton about until now. He has hopefully learnt from his mistake but again if mistakes were never made, how is anyone supposed to learn. Hopefully this whole blown out situation has made a lot of people question their own decisions on how they have reacted to certain situations and everyone can learn from it in their own way. Personally, I don’t think anyone needed to apologise on social media, apart from Vittorio but I understand why the boys and Daniel Sloss have done so. Also, for all those people saying that Rebecca is being dramatic or wanting the attention, grow up and educate yourself. She is the only person that can sign off on jokes at her expense, especially when she has experinced something as awful as rape.

Ross McQuade

Glad you guys have addressed the issue. Feel bad that vito has been hung out to dry right enough.

ells bells

yep, yes, yeah & affirmative

Ben

Is this the same Rebecca Goodwin that sat and laughed at the same jokes on the 2024 roast? I think if so many other comedians are having to beg for people to accept their apology, she should at very least explain her double standards. So many good, honest and hard working comedians are in the spot light for this.

AJ

Look at his little wigan apology

ells bells

here! here! well flippin said!! ✨️‼️✨️

Joe Hill

Of course fair point made, an apology after six days of ignoring it, after waiting for other comedians to explain what they could have cleared up in a post, sent via email and on Patreon is totally fine.

ells bells

EXACTLY ⁉️ like whaaaa....

Ben

Okay now we know Rebecca has accepted their apology. They have given their statement. Its done. The issues this will cause is have they thrown VA under the bus? Maybe? As someone pointed out Jota's family probably werent contacted for consent etc. So why should VA have gotten consent? I watched a Dead Men patreon earlier this year and im sure a certain comedian wasn't asked for consent about what they said for 90mins. This is where the age old debate of morality of jokes pops up and I assume this is why they have given the statement they have because if they start talking about not making these types of jokes it opens a can of worms which can't ever be fixed. I think because VA and everyone else has said sorry this vague statement is needed because as I said to start elaborating on it will cause even more issues and means they will have to censor themselves far too much. HAW has always danced on the line which is why they are so popular. Dead Men stepped over the line and plant themselves in the mud which is why they aren't as big but are very unapologetic in their brand of comedy. Unfortunately HAW need to take this hit because its the game they're playing and I don't think it'll be the last time this happens. Just my opinion though

Kieron Ward

pleased to see the apology and i hope it is posted to a wider audience than just patreon-it needs to be. wording closley follows Kai's post which was informative and clearly laid the blame at Victorrio's door but also attributed some blame to HAW team too. Apology feels sincere and doesnt look to excuse their part which is fair. Lessons will be learnt but mistakes can happen when a company grows so big so quickly especially with the range and scale -and frequency - of events they put on. Take the jabs for being wrong, apologize ,learn and then move on determined to be better.

Luke Payne

I saw it? The thousands of other patreons saw it? The hundreds in the room saw it? The 10 comedians on stage saw it? Why all the outrage now? Why all the apologies now? Performative AF.

ells bells

agree 💯 percent 👌‼️👌

ells bells

exactly ⚡️‼️

ells bells

yesssss 💯 ‼️ 💯

Danielle Thornhill

Excellent way of putting it. Totally agree. In my opinion the only person who actually had any right to take offence was Rebecca 💕

netty

Glad you have done this, and its only right and proper that you sorted things with Rebecca first. As with anything, everyone will have their own opinion on what is right and wrong or whatever. And there will always be those who bitch and moan. The important thing is that Rebecca feels this has been addressed properly and it was dealt with by all involved according to their own conscience. Everyone bitching about her, her reaction or saying it was just a joke....go 🖕

Joe Taylor

Cheers Netty, I’m glad I could help put this all to rest 🙏🏻

ells bells

omg THIS is what I wanted to say!! soooo profound and, imho, soooo logical & correct !!! 👊 ✌️👌

John Roberts

It was a roast ffs. Shes was IN a roast. Dead mums, miscarriaged babies, nothing is off the cards. If something is, don't throw your hat into the ring. Everyone can get these jokes.

J G

Solid statement lads, and it’ll blow over and everyone can crack on. Comedians from all over the place make jokes that some find inappropriate, offensive or just down right shocking… but in a brutally honest opinion; comedy is comedy and If someone is ever offended, why is that YOUR fault. However, understandably the “duty of care” argument comes into play at some point… but where does that start and stop when you almost are having to audit comedy. Anyway… publicity is publicity. Fair play for the donation, and the statement…. It’s a Good-win for the pod.. Sorry. That was uncalled for

Bell Whiff

When's the India special out?

Nic

She wasn’t in the roast John.

John Roberts

Not that roast. She was in another but was too pissed to perform..or am I imagining that? Edit: Nope, not imagining it. She was in the first one.

Danielle Thornhill

While I agree with your point about always getting consent, I would argue its different when it's someone you know, speak to and have the access to check they are okay with it. Getting a response from Diojo Jotas wife given that none of them know her (I think) would have been different to checking with Rebecca when she wasn't featured on that roast. But I do see your point 💚

Liam

Free the lads 😂🔐🔐

Kerry J

They obviously haven’t ignored it for a week, they’re not a bunch of dicks - we hear enough of their views and opinions on things to know they’re decent people. They don’t owe anyone the ins and outs. They’ve spoken to Rebecca & she’s the only person that deserved an apology.

Danielle Thornhill

But its her trauma to joke about, so she is allowed to not like it. She is the only one entitled to be offended in my opinion. I joke about my own trauma all the time, but if someone I barely knew did it I would feel I had the right to not be okay with it ❤️

Keano

Absolutely 💯 agree with you but if you went in to the HAW Universe and did a roast about it and numerous interviews with comedians and such, friends and not friends and brought this up to engage with audiences and bring awareness to what is an unfathomable level of abuse but you were paid to do so then there is the real possibility that others will too. Anybody in the public eye or who chooses to try and insert themselves in to the comedy world must expect that their lives and experiences whether good or bad will be brought up at some stage. Im sorry for your trauma btw. I hope you are doing as well as possible. ❤️🙏🏻

Lisa

He threw himself under his own bus and took the Lids and Sloss with him

Vick

They’ve clearly spoken and apologised to Rebecca about it well before posting this, it says so. This is just an explanation to be transparent, the joke wasn’t about us, so why should we put a timeframe on when they should be letting us know what they’ve done about it. They don’t owe us an apology. If it bothered you so much clearly you watched the roast a year ago and if you for some reason needed an apology, it should have been then. They don’t need your approval, just Rebecca’s forgiveness and it seems like they’ve got it. Why you offended now?!

Joe Hill

Why you replying?

Joe

Missed a trick not posting a pic of a corner flag

KatieBeevers

I really hope this doesn’t lead knobheads to seek out HAW content that’s public such as D&D and take any of that out of context. I mean Harry bums a lot of dragons. If you aren’t a lid it’s hard to fully appreciate. Glad the guys have addressed this in a well thought out and considerate way and have put RG’s feels ahead of anything else.

Lachlan McDonald

Rebecca Goodwin deciding that this is completely offensive 12 months later seems odd. The nature of the joke isn’t about a nice topic so I would totally understand her offence - if she didn’t go on Dead Men Talking and other podcasts joking about things of this nature. I think she probably had a bigger issue with the fact that she wasn’t on the stage for this roast - likely on account of being too hammered for the first one and leaving the stage. It feels performative but also, I don’t know what it’s like to have any mental health issues so maybe I am being quite harsh.

Kirsty

As usual I’m gutted by a lot of men’s comments in response to this kind of thing 😴

Nathan

George Clooney could only wish

Alex

I wish I could like this a million

Rae

He threw everyone under the bus, all his own doing. Vittorio let evryone down and his apology was arrogant.

David Furphy

Because everyone assumed that the subject of the joke had been made aware of the joke and approved it. Apologies were very much in order when everyone involved became aware of how hurt Rebecca was by the whole situation. Very very odd hill for you to die on here lad.

Brad

Except she wasn’t at the roast?😭

Luke Payne

Womp womp. Im sure Kirks family was upset at the multitude of jokes made at the expense of his death, should all comedians make a formal apology to them too?

John Roberts

I said she was in A roast, not that roast. She knows the kind of humor, shes actively participated in it and knows the things said aren't said maliciously. The whole thing seemed really disingenuous to me.

Tom F

I'd made the same assumption that the joke wouldn't have been made without Rebecca being, at least in principle, onboard for it. I had been willing to defend the joke on the basis that it was a roast, it was behind a paywall, and that Rebecca was reasonably informed of and consenting to the types of jokes that might be made about her. That's what I'd assumed about all the offensive jokes really. Where someone is a professional comedian, or long-standing part of the broader HAW network, there might be less of a need, relatively speaking, to call out what to expect. But if Rebecca Goodwin was not given any choice or control over jokes like this, then yeah, that's a let down. Honestly though: I'm not interested in the broader culture war bullshit (the stuff that people call "discourse" in total bad faith) about what is and isn't okay to say in comedy etc blah blah blah. Everyone's apologised and Rebecca Goodwin, by all accounts, has accepted those apologies. So at this point it's not any of my business anymore. Play on.

Lewis Broughton

Im just so glad Rebecca was taken sick and had to leave the stage or else she would of had to witness this insensitive mishap first hand the world works in mysterious ways

Shaun

Yes but why 'put it right' now?, its their video they know what was on it, its been a year. Same with vittorio obviously if he posted it 1 day and then 2 days later does a big apology. Ill tell ye why coz everyones scared of the fuckin woke mob😂

netty

Because Vittorio only posted a screen shot on Instagram recently. Previously it was behind the pay wall, hence Rebecca mot knowing about it. And its not woke, its common decency and compassion. Try learning some

Arie Johansen

Fuckin ell it's because no one knew Vittorio didn't clear it all with Rebecca and it only came to light recently when it went public

Danielle Thornhill

That's a very valid point and I didnt think of it like that. And thank you, that's really nice of you to say! A lot better as more time passes, this podcast has been a life saver. When the terrible thoughts kick in, get the ear phones in and the lads on, guaranteed within 10 minutes I am feeling better. Better than therapy most days 🖤

Danielle Thornhill

This comment is the one. Another proud female patreon here!

Davy McVey

Every comedian, including all those involved disagree with you. The level of arrogance and ignorance on your part to post the shite you have posted here is crazy. Give your head a wobble, kid!!!

Glen

Another apology ruined by Ste

Luke Payne

In public, for appearances, ofcourse they do Davy, God forbid they're canceled 🤦‍♂️

ZuluBravo95

Read the statement Shaun Before Vittorio posted it and Rebecca saw it and complained the lads assumed Vittorio had sought permission

Daniel Williams

Yep. Sound. Now let’s not talk about it! Can’t wait for the Patreon exclusive this week

Alex

You're talking about two different roasts

Jake

Literally says the apologises were noted but not accepted in her statement

Luke Rollinson

I dont agree with this, i think rebecca is the only one who isnt performing outrage, i think everyone else including sloss and kai are outraged for the sake of internet drama or brand safety, but rebecca has every right to be offended that a joke was made at her expense without her knowledge or participation. Vittorio should have known better than to make the joke and post the clip but thats really the extent of it, the hate he's getting right now us massively undeserved and rebecca could have handled this privately

Luke Payne

Should of handled it privately* This whole posting Tiktoks shit is absolutely unnecessary. Trying to ruin a man's career because he said a joke you didnt like is grim.

Luke

I’m sure Rebecca has seen a nice bump in her profile and subs on the back of this … every cloud eh.

Jake

I’m sorry but consent for a joke is crazy. Rebecca put out a film called “whorey potter and the prisoner of ass gangbang” Wonder how the consent conversation went with Danial Radcliffe and Emma Watson when the characters they are synonymous with were getting there heads bummed in. People who live their life in the gutter take any opportunity to stand on the kerb and to take the moral high ground.

Scott

Calm down hen.

Fat Pikey

Look, I'm not going to downplay sexual assault, rape is absolutely deplorable. However, this joke was told during a comedy roast. Anyone who participates should be prepared to hear jokes told at their expense. That night there were racial jokes, homophobic jokes, pedophilic jokes, everyone was targeted at some point. In my opinion Vittorio did nothing wrong. He wrote a joke with the intention of causing shock & therefore a laugh. For someone with so much experience taking it on the chin, I feel like Rebecca has handled this very badly.

Fat Pikey

I thought she'd be better at taking it on the chin.

Fat Pikey

I'm very disappointed that all roasts have been made unavailable to watch.
