In this video

This video is Lesson 1 of the 'Learning to see' term - in this lesson I'll introduce the course, show you how to make a blind drawing, explain the partial peek drawing process and discuss the marks in Egon Schiele's line drawings. To get full benefit from the course, watch one video per month, practicing for at least 2 hours per week over the course of that month, before moving on to the next lesson.

You will need:

 • Paper

 • A pen or pencil

 • Optional: charcoal or compressed charcoal

Your assignments are:

 • Make 7 blind contour drawings of 3+ mins each

 • Make one or more partial peek drawing of 10+ mins

 • Optional: Make a transcription of Egon Schiele's drawing of Lilly Steiner

Tip: If you're in a hurry, click on the settings wheel on the bottom right hand corner of the video to adjust the playback speed.

Portrait Drawing: Seeing without prejudice

This looks wonderful! Worth the wait. :-)

Heidi Karpa

In a previous life I built websites and managed a web developers shop. You did a Herculean job getting your tech issues fixed. It’s very stressful when a launch is planned and problems develop. So glad I’m past it, sorry you were stuck in it. What you’ve created is impressive. So looking forward to digging into this course today. 😊 Thank you for your hard work.

Deanne Richards

What a wonderful course! So looking forward to tackling

DrawBrighton

Oh my goodness, it was so very boring - as I was doing a final check on Monday I found an editing error in the video and had to take it down again. Then, while I was fixing it the extra footage I dragged in crashed my poor Mac and I had to buy a new external hard drive and take everything off to make room to edit the video. Im not used to the processing needed for 4K videos! Long story short, I have taken professional advice and sorted out a good long term solution so it should be plain sailing from here on. Thanks for all of your enthusiasm and support Heidi :)

Nella Scurfield

Really looking forward to tackling this!! Thanks so much

Marta Scott

I’ve just completed the lesson, this was just what I needed from my Covid isolation bed thank you Jake! I’ll be upgrading my membership for sure 😊

Drawing portraits is a very exciting process and I think everyone can master this skill, you just need the will. Thanks for your informativeand wholesome video

DrawBrighton

Oh you poor thing! I hope you make a quick and full recovery Marta, but I'm glad you get some extra drawing time ;)

Carole H

What a brilliant taste of things to come. Well worth waiting for Jake and sorry about your IT issues. I got totally absorbed in the transcription exercise, really enjoyed it and am looking forward to my 'homework'. Thank you

Courtney

What a fantastic first lesson! I'm so excited to explore more of this course :)

Miray

This lesson was everything I hoped it would be. I’m really looking forward to next week

Julie Rossini

Great lesson ! Thanks a lot, Jake ! And thank you as well for the tree image, it was music to my ears...

Rosy Carrick

Me too, it was such a cool first session, and so lovely to see your happy smiling face Jake! xx

Beth Harley

I LOVE blind drawing! (My first ever time!). Thank you for such an inspirational class!

Leila Aghaei

I loved this session, and i have an issue in partial peek, how can i decide how bold is line that i draw?

Pat

Drawing with music ....why didn't I think of that before....

Pat

where is lesson 2 ...I think I binned the e mail.....

DrawBrighton

It's not you Pat, it's me! I'm just uploading the 2nd lesson today - the delay last week has knocked be behind this week too so I'm very sorry for the hassle.

Pat

agh ...its no problem at all re the delay. Gives me more time for lesson 1 which didn't come out until Thursday of last week. I'm happy with every Thursday if it gives you more time ?? I'm just so glad I'm not having a senior moment thinking I'd binned the e mail !

Jenny Tellier

Loved this first lesson, thank you, Jake! Put this on just after I woke up and found it a lot easier to draw the blind contour and peek drawings with some classical music (which I never do, fun suggestion) and a still sleepy brain. I look forward to getting my practice in and continuing the series. :) Appreciate your constant encouragement throughout the lesson too.

Fleur Finch

I've enjoyed the first session and find your presentation and gentle, encouraging explanations so helpful. I've already noticed some progress.

Rhiannon Pettie

Wow! Such a super lesson, it was really good to pause and do the exercises in between, I really felt able to give them more of a go. Very interesting to understand how Egon Schiele worked as well, once mentioned about the observational lines, I could really see what you meant, I will be looking at artwork so differently now, thank you!

Peewip Edwards

Hey everyone - I loved this first lesson and thought it was very interesting, but I'm a bit unclear about the aim of the blind drawing. Does it matter what the drawings look like - as in, is the idea for them to look more and more like the thing being drawn from, or is it simply an exercise in following lines/seeing things without interpreting them?
