If you’ve followed me for a while, you may know that I used to be a plain blue apron guy. It was the uniform of my restaurant years—functional, serious, and professional. But a few years back, while filming a video at The New York Times, I tried on a bright yellow apron they had on set, and something clicked. For the first time, I looked in the mirror and thought: this feels like me now. It reflected the joy I find in cooking—the color, the play, the sharing. Cooking is about precision and technique, but that precision and technique is always in the service of joy. This is true whether I'm cooking a meal for myself, I'm making dinner for the family, or I'm hosting a dinner party.
That idea—cooking as a source of brightness—sits at the heart of my new apron collaboration with Hedley & Bennett, which launches today. It’s guava pink with golden-yolk accents, a color combination that just makes me smile every time I put it on.
My connection with H&B goes way back. I’ve known Ellen Marie Bennett and her team since 2015, and I’ve been watching (and wearing) their work for years. Their aprons are worn and loved by chefs and home cooks all over the world, and for good reason: they’re built to last, comfortable enough for long days in the kitchen, and designed with the details that only a cook would think of. Serious Eats even named H&B the best overall apron in their gear test.
My first time collaborating with them was for a Barbie-themed party at Canlis called Kenlis—I had them make a custom pink apron that said “I am Kenjough.” It was a one-off joke, but when the apron arrived, I was floored by the stitching, logo work, and overall quality. The H&B team went the extra mile to make something truly special, and I remember thinking right then: we have to do this again—properly, for everyone.
This new apron is that dream realized. It’s fun and bright, but still rugged and ready for work. And of course, it features a few egg-themed graphics designed by Keith Lowe, because eggs have always been my beginning. They’re the start of most of my meals, my favorite ingredient to cook and write about, and they’ve quietly marked the beginning of every new venture I’ve taken—my Serious Eats column, my New York Times work, my cookbooks, my YouTube channel, and this very Patreon community.
Eggs are the beginning of so many great meals for me. I hope this apron is the beginning of some great meals for you.
