Hi everyone,

In this week’s progress report, I said I would write a post with more details about releasing Hillside on Steam.

First, Patreon and Subscribestar supporters will still get the latest versions just like they do now. Nothing will change there. Releasing the game on Steam only means that people who are not supporters will be able to buy it (or part of it).

There has been some confusion about this, but as I understand it, Steam no longer allows adult games to be released in Early Access. Only finished products can be sold. Because of that, my plan is to split Hillside into two parts and release them separately once they are finished.

Version 0.18 is a natural break point in the story. Once v0.18 is complete, part one of Hillside would be submitted to Steam (subject to approval — more on that below). After that, development would continue on part two, but it would only be available to Patreon and Subscribestar supporters while in development. Part two would only be added to Steam once it, and Hillside as a whole, is fully finished.

As I understand it, Steam does not offer second chances if they reject a game for its content. If they object, the game is rejected and cannot be resubmitted. Because of this, it’s important to be cautious and get it right the first time.

The main potential issue I can see with Hillside is Emma. Her physical appearance should be fine, but her language and behaviour might be a problem, and the look of her college environment definitely would be. Hopefully, updating the college setting and checking her dialogue for anything that sounds too childish would be enough to avoid outright rejection.

As for timing, other developers suggest putting your Steam store page up at least six months before release, to allow time to build wishlists. So this is not something that will happen soon, which means the required work can be spread out and shouldn't have a major impact on development.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Hi DB, as someone who has previously bought games I liked and that Steam supported, Hillside seems like an innocent game for Steam (in my opinion). From what I've seen from other developers, they add music to their games before releasing them on the Steam platform. Also, Emma looks like a mature woman, so I don't think that will be a problem. One small suggestion: if you add different languages to the game, I'm sure it will sell much more. Good luck DB! I'll be the first to buy it on Steam. 😎

DarkBlue

Thanks, Castiel. Adding music and different languages are definitely things I would look to do. ❤️👍

I think @Castiel is right there, in my opinion there is nothing in there which should be much of a problem on Steam…. But you never know with their shitty politics… As soon this is possible to wishlist, i will do so and i will also write a glowing review about your Masterpiece DB, I promise ! 🫡💯👍

It's a shame how so many platforms and institutions have become so hostile to creators making adult content, even the ones in just written form with no images. It makes it really hard to not only release it for people to enjoy, but to also make money and/or a living off of it. Hope everything goes smoothly and it all works out.

Tiberius

If you plan to split seasons at 0.18 you should ensure that Emma has matured and become a young adult by the end of the update.

Old dog

As you have already mentioned the problems that you may face concerning certain characters I will say no more but I would like to wish you all the best on your steam project.

DarkBlue

Thank you. It is a shame and unfortunately it only seems to be getting worse. 👍

DarkBlue

Yes, I will try to do so. That way there will not be anything sexual with Emma when she is at her most immature. Thanks.

This is great news DB. When it's available, I will wishlist and also purchase on Steam. I did the same with Digi.B's Artemis. Another game I absolutely love and support on Patreon

All good… I know every Dev of mine goes through this Steam situation. And as always... I JUST WISH STEAM WOULD JUST ACCEPT AND APPROVE OF OUR DEVS AND THEIR GAMES! WHY MAKE THEM GO THROUGH SO MUCH 😭? The best I can do for you is Wishlist since I don't play on Steam 😅. Maybe… I can hit the other sites and leave reviews (Zone/GamestoryLog). I wish you the best of luck on this. This will be HUGE for Hillside. "YOU GOT THIS, DB ✊🏻💪🏻🔥!!!" HS NEEDS TO BE SHARED WITH THE WORLD 🌎!!! And we'll be here for you 🫰🏻 to support ❤️ and encourage 🫶🏻 you all the way 🤗!

Hi DB will you be posting on Patreon and Steam

DarkBlue

I’m not yet familiar with how things work, or what people expect, on Steam. When you say "posting", do you mean news and progress updates? If so, nothing will change for my Patreon. Patreon will remain the main place for news and the only place where the latest version of Hillside is available. If it’s possible to share development news on Steam, I may do so, but it would likely be very minimal. I’m also creating a website where people who buy the game on Steam can read brief updates on the progress of part two of Hillside.
