There have been some concerns voiced recently about Emma being a love interest. In response I said that I would make a post about it.

Simply put, Hillside is about a man who enters the lives of a family of four women and how he comes to fall in love with each of them separately.

Those four women are Charlotte, Lucy, Suzi and Emma, and they are the four main love interests with whom you will be able to have a romantic and sexual relationship.

The relationships are exclusive of one another, so the player chooses their love interest and the other three will be excluded. That means that if you don't choose Emma as your love interest then you will not experience any sexual content involving her and your growing father-daughter relationship will continue.

I chose for Emma and the MC to form a father-daughter kind of relationship for a number of reasons. The main one is because I wanted the player to feel that a romantic relationship with Emma was wrong and inappropriate somehow, which it is on many levels. I hoped that people choosing her as a love interest would feel conflicted about it and experience a moral dilemma, as the MC undoubtedly would.

I don't want to spoil the story by saying too much about what is going to happen, but I will say that, following the events of v0.11, Emma will begin to act more maturely and she will be the one that initiates the romantic relationship with the MC.

If anyone has any more specific questions or concerns then leave a comment and I will try to answer them.

Thanks,DB

Thank you clarifying this. You didn't have to for me because I got your idea from the start. It one of the many reasons I chose to support you. I hope this will put to rest the controversy.

Oh I do have concerns... Kidding of course ^^. I trust you entirely on this matter, That's not going to change now

HappyHuman

I'm here for the Emma, and will probably have two playthroughs to see both sides of that story. Totally fine with everything you've said!

I'm rather surprised that there has been any controversy as I assumed that this would be the outline from the get go. What I do like is the exclusivity of the paths as this fits the narrative of the story much better than any other approach would. I'm glad it is going to be like that and looking forward to see how everything will unfold as we proceed.

i could understand if she was more mature and maybe a little older, and didn't have that creepy pink room, then i could possibly understand it. But to me she looks up to the MC as a father, and maybe i am reading this wrong but when she calls him her phone says Dad, so yeah not sure how this will work out or how Charlotte could ever forgive him. He is an older guy hooking up with her daughter. No matter how you write it. I am in agreement with Charlotte: "This town is full of fucking perverts and predators." How does it make the MC any better.

I think you made it clear, and I think your intention tries even to capture well what can happen in reality, specifically in the case of Emma. I know directly of situations where an older man had the possibility with younger women (going from 20s to 19yo, with differences varying between e.g.16-20 years of age), and especially if the person really cares about the younger one (even just as friend, or anyway starts as friendship), and/or is protective, how that bring to a dilemma, despite the fact those were in general more sexual active and experienced than Emma. I have seen how unfortunately at least without explicit communication, even trying to do it "silently" and with the best intention, the rejection of the younger lady may give strong reactions, and ultimately hurt her deeply and how, even more unfortunately, in reality that may play well in the hands of a lot of younger, but less careful people, closer in age to the young one (so some people would say automatically they cannot be "predators"), but who will not have any problem in taking her just for "use and drop when bored or satisfied", by leveraging the "feeling down" and attempt to "rebound" due to the rejection. They can apply, but life and relations are more than simple blaket rules like e.g. "older predator" or e.g. "younger gold digger". For one, I support you go for your approach, it will add up some complexity for you in the game, also to see how you want to tackle what can be the reaction of e.g. Charlotte (e.g. "predator" as mentioned by someone, or "reliable and will care for and protect her"), or the MC possible doubts about which way he should go, and the possible doubts of the others (e.g. Lucy seems the kind of person that may be more on the "fun side") on whether to develop the thing, but I think it is much better.

Thank you Dark Blue for clarifying. I don't understand the Excitement at all. We have 3 other pretty Ladies to choose from. Problem solved ;)

Excellent thought process Deebee.

DB, I always understood that we got to romance just one of the 4 ladies of the household (and while the story could evolve into polyamory with several of the 4 women, we've seen nothing but our fantasies that might make this so :). Thanks for this post and clarifying that for everyone, so we know that this continues to be one of the pillars of what is a great story. I chose the Lucy romance early in the story to see where it would go. Will you give us an opportunity to gently end the Lucy romance to pursue something with one of the other 3 women? I'm thinking that the MC had a bartender friend that might be good for Lucy since he trusted him to guard Emma while he had to go help Suzi. Please keep up the great storytelling and the genuine evolution of these relationships!

DisappointingPizza

I 100% agree. Being with Emma is just wrong. I feel if you choose Emma as your love interest, it would be like Geralt from Witcher 3 having a romantic relationship with his adopted daughter Ciri.

Tell your story the way you see fit and Fuck the rest.

Dónaill

Thanks for offering meaningful choices with moral dilemmas. That's how a VN should be in my opinion.

Andrzej Kaczmarek

I doubt that You should including in relationship Suzi too. Booth are Charlote daughters. However Suzi is older, better choose her trust as achievment than any sexual relation. Better will be complication between Charlotte and Lucy or even Kaylah. Moreover I doubt that last MC action was needed. Calling police and Fox next day could give more trusting effect on booth girls, especially on naive Emma. Probably could Emma meet another boy. What about poor David?

Pax

DB, Thanks for giving each of us the choice to make regarding who to pursue a romance with. We each get to choose how we want to tell our personal story between the MC and not just the 4 romanceable ladies but also with Kaylah (turn down offered intimacy or go with it, another choice that defines the MC) and perhaps other women. I'm glad I get to 'write' my story with the broader choices you have given each of us. Thanks!

Personally, I never saw Emma as a potential LI for the MC as she was currently written as a character. I know she's 18 and in "college" but I have to agree with people on her maturity level or lack thereof. But, was still curious about how the dynamic would play out considering MC worked for her mom, so I held off on pursuing the other women assuming there'd be some "fast forwarding" of Emma's growth via a part 2 to Hillside. Anyways, glad to see that she'll be having some character growth in the next version. Looking forward to seeing how it pans out.

Zenim

I just really hope that you don't make us too sad that we choose one over another. Like Lucy being sad that MC likes her sister. That shit kills me every time and is one of the reasons i like harem games. Denying the beautiful girls you have created isn't easy.

BrokenChojin

Looking forward to multiple playthroughs.

I thought it was clear from the get go (and statde as such) that all four Llyod women would be love interests, so for me there was no clarification needed. However, I do have a question if we already made a decision between Char and Emma's paths. I have been happily collecting Emma points while Char seems to get closer to MC.

Samsungnote007

I hadn't realized that Emma was someone we could have picked - that just means more game play for me!! I can't wait to go back and select the other three Lloyd women and see where all the paths lead!

Echo Foxtrot

I was wondering 2 or 3 updates back and wanted to ask how if any have the 4 girls personalities changed since you first created them. Currently for me it seems like any move to romance Emma would be seen as a complete betrayal by all the 3 other Lloyds. I felt like you had Emma in the running early on but kinda sidetracked it because it seem to fit in less and less.

Jess

Could be that their relationship would have to be secret. Would also add some spice to it.

Echo Foxtrot

They are my special girls regardless. Too sentimental for my own good perhaps haha

Marc Chase

i always thought it was just 3 women: Charlotte, Lucy, and Kaylgh, -- i always thought of Emma as the MC's "daughter" and Suzi was just a bitch to the MC that he would have to be nice to so he could date Charlotte -- it would be kinda gross at this point to become romantically involved with Emma, and not sure Suzi even likes the MC

Marc Chase

Steve the bartender is perfect for Lucy

Samsungnote007

Marc - "If" Suzi is to come around, I'd say that MC's efforts with the paparazzi would be the turning event. But I was under the same impression as you wrt Emma. She's too naïve and innocent to really be an option for the MC. I always saw Lucy, Kaylah, and of course Charlotte as the main love interests. But as I said in an earlier comment, I'd love more content and game play. Just not sure I'd go the Emma route, you're mileage may vary.

Terry Latham

I guessed that things were this way from the achievements screen it features the main love interests. While I'm pursuing a paternal role with Emma currently, I think it would be an interesting arc in Emma's and the MC's characters should romance develop.

Danny

I’m gonna shag Emma’s arsehole inside out

Marc Chase

I kind of figured that Detective Carter did to david what he did to Zak
