Ah yes, the confusion over this episode! First time I watched I seriously had to go and check on imdb if I was even watching the right episode, and then if all of season 2 was gonna be after the time jump or if we were going back...

YEEEESSS!!! I love that freaking show!! You should definitely watch it again with the other finale, it’ll help. I have been waiting for this since you were talking about the morals of the show in the earlier episodes (just you wait! Haha). We’re slowly getting to the thick of it and the deeper we go the more uncomfortable it gets and the more you question it and yourself. This is why I love Dollhouse, it seems like a supposed light hearted and a little icky show at first but then Bam! It’s actually so deep. I think with The Good Place they are the most important shows I have seen dealing with ethics. And about Whiskey, like Caroline said she reverted to her active state so she wouldn’t become crazy for being alone for so long. It would have killed her to be Dr Sanders for so long all alone and she knew it. I think Topher is one of the most tragic characters of the show too.. especially since he is shown to be so callous about it all for so long, the fact that he doomed humanity because of his hubris and it driving him insane is heartbreaking all around… Props to all of the actors too, they did a bang up job. Can’t wait to see you react to the next season! I think this is one of these shows that’ll stick with you.

This episode never aired on TV and was included as a DVD-bonus. As such, I was never quite sure if it counted as the official season 1 finale or if it's just considered a bonus episode. Apparently streaming services list it as the season 1 finale, so I guess that answers my question.

While this isn't the finale, it is a standalone canon episode, and it is made to be watched before season 2. When they were preparing release season 1 on dvd, they ended up having to create another episode because foreign dvd distribution required a 13th episode for them to release it. But yep, still canon, and still intended to be watched before season 2. (I went ahead and copied my comment from Riley's reaction lol. She, like anyone who watches, was pretty confused with the placement.)

Also, an interesting thing Joss wanted us to keep in mind is that although it's canon, because memories aren't 100% reliable, you may expect to see things (that we flashed back to in the chair) play out a bit differently.

Joss Whedon&co predicting men "identifying" as little girls would be a thing......

madfem

The way they wrote Topher's likeability arc... insane

Mahaut

It’s on the first season dvd as well, listed as the finale there (1x13)

“This episode is full of spoilers” I disagree. It’s not a spoiler if the story is telling it to you in this order. There are people who say this episode should be watched after season 2, but it was created to be viewed in this order as you have seen. Everything shown in this episode was intentionally shown before season 2 premiered.

Curious what you mean by that…

That Topher scene genuinely makes me tear up! It is so good!

The woman playing Mag is Felicia Day, who played Vi in Buffy season 7, as one of the potentials. She was a pioneer in the early web series days of YouTube. She created and starred in her own web series called The Guild, which might not be your thing but for us nerdy/gamer types it was one of the earliest showcases of geeky things. She also starred and helped Joss Whedon create his own web "movie" or set of shorts called Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog which was great and you might like it. Guest stars other Buffy actors. :)
