Addison

Neil deserved so much better than this death. I hate it.

It all started when Bae begged Rumple to go with him, holding his hand over the pit and he opened his hand to let Bae go and ended with Bae BEGGING Rumple to open his hand to let him go and Rumple not wanting to let go of him again…this episode was a gut punch. Only good thing of this episode was the start of our Outlaw Queen ship.

I feel like they did this to make it okay for Emma and Hook.

Addison

Yeah, I think that’s why they killed off Neil too because they wanted Emma and hooked to happen and they didn’t know what to do with Neil‘s character if he wasn’t gonna end up with Emma

Neal Cassidy's death in "Once Upon a Time" was a complex decision driven by a few key factors. The showrunners, Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis, wanted to explore the idea of breaking the cycle of bad parenting, highlighting Neal's potential for heroic sacrifice and also pushing the narrative forward. Additionally, Neal's death was part of a larger story arc that involved the character's relationship with both Emma and Rumplestiltskin, and his own journey of wanting to escape magic and find a normal life.  Here's a more detailed breakdown of the reasons: * Breaking the Cycle of Bad Parenting:
The writers wanted to demonstrate that even with good intentions, the cycle of bad parenting can be broken. Neal's sacrifice was seen as an act of redemption, especially considering his father's history.
 * Character Development:
Neal's character arc was centered around his desire for a normal life free from magic and his father's influence. His death allowed the writers to explore his potential as a hero and his willingness to die for those he loved.
 * Narrative Advancement:
Neal's death created a space for Emma and Rumplestiltskin to move forward in their own storylines. His absence also allowed the show to explore the complexities of grief and the impact of their past on their future relationships.
 * Emotional Impact:
The writers wanted to create a scene that would be emotionally impactful for the audience, showing that even main characters can die and that happy endings are not always guaranteed
 * Actor's Issues:
While not the primary reason, there were reports of the actor, Michael Raymond-James, having personal issues. This may have influenced the decision to remove him from the show
