To answer your question in the beginning, everyone born into the Air Nomad tribe was a bender due to how spiritual they were. And I'm really glad you're enjoying this show, it just gets better and better.

kareem 🇵🇸

every air nomad/airbender lived in the temple which means every air "person" have been killed, and the air "people" were all airbenders due to their spirituality so yeah even if they were just air nomads without airbending abilities they woulda still been dead

kareem 🇵🇸

to answer the last 2 ep question, airbenders/airnomads got overpowered and killed by the fire nation ONLY bc of the comet the fire nation harnessed

It's never thouroughly explored in the series but as Iroh's journey to the Spirit World hints at not only the avatar can visit it. But only very spiritual people can reach the Spirit World.

So glad you enjoyed the first book! Can't wait for book 2, not understating that is has some of the most emotional/best episodes of the whole series

kareem 🇵🇸

zaho could destroy the moon cuz the moon and ocean abandonned their immortality when they crossed over from the spirit world, they would still be "immortal" as they could live forever but mortal in the way that they could be killed still.

Thomas

Through meditation, you can project your spirit into the spirit world.

I know I am a little late, but to add on to what Kareem said, the fire nation or anyone for that matter had no idea who the next avatar was, only that it was a air nomad. So knowing the avatar was the only person who could stop their assault they killed all the air nomads in hopes to kill the avatar. Fire typically does not win against air, but with the help of the comet the fire nation was stronger than normal and wiped them out with ease
