In the Harry Potter Universe, love is a type of powerful old magic. When Harry’s mother sacrificed herself for him, it created a kind of magical boundary on Harry against those who do not know love (aka. Voldemort). That’s why Professor Quirrell could not touch Harry. That is also why Voldemort’s curse on Baby Harry rebounded. Professor McGonagall is one of two mother figures for Harry throughout the series. She is very good at being strict and not displaying favoritism towards Harry even though it’s obvious that she cares for him deeply. Dumbledore just flat out shows his favoritism for Harry. You can’t really tell in the movie but in the books, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw houses also cheer when Gryffindor wins because Slytherin house had won it like the past 5 years in a row. The reason no one calls Voldemort by his name is because he was able to track anyone who used his name making the general public afraid to speak it even after he vanished. (except for Dumbledore) I also just realized they left out one of obstacles to the Sorcerer’s stone. After the chess game, there is a riddle game involving potions that Hermione beats before Harry meets Professor Quirrell.

Erik Poulsen

Sofie, you asked how the Sorting Hat Works? The Hat can see everything inside of a child's head and it determines their personality and sorts them into a house by personality. Gryffindor is for people who are brave. Ravenclaw is for people who are smart. Hufflepuff is for people who are kind and friendly and loyal. And Slytherin is for people who are ambitious and loyal to the Wizards pure bloodline. Hope that answers your question.

priscilla

I believe that the kids are sorted based on what they value, not necessarily their personalities . Gryffindor : courage & chivalry, Slytherin : Ambitious & resourceful, Hufflepuff : loyal & kind, Ravenclaw : intelligence & creativity. "Love" is one of the main themes of the series. What Dumbledore meant at the end is that Lily Potter's love for her son created a magical shield that protects him. Also, I don't know why they removed it from the movies but Harry did receive gift from the Weasley's, a family jumper just like Ron. He's part of their famil

Thomas

Don't worry the reason why Snape treats Harry differently will be explained in one of the movies. I don't want to spoiler you that's why I won't say in which film. But you will know it eventually.

Duh Istoka

This was really lovely, I enjoyed this sweet reaction with my morning coffee! Don’t worry, all your questions will be answered Sofie!

Enzo Reis

Stop! Giving spoliers.

Enzo Reis
>>159658668

You shouldn't have explained the first part, the sacrifice thing is important for the fourth movie. And it takes the surprise thing away and her right to have theories about it. Be careful to don't give spoilers.

Enzo Reis

Guys don't give spoilers, some things you don't have to explain because it's gonna be explained in the movies ahead.

Brantly
>>159658668

It’s important in the fourth movie but that doesn’t give you any spoilers. You should already know that information as Dumbledore vaguely explains it at the end of the first movie.

Enzo Reis

Read the first thing that you wrote. You took away the surprise of finding out that Snape and James were classmates.

Enzo Reis
>>159658668

There's a reason for the fact that he explained vaguely both in the movies and the book, because like I said it's important for the fourth movie especially in a dialogue that you know very well which one I'm referring to. In other words, knowing specifically what Dumbledore said takes away the fun of the suprise and figuring out what actually happened, which It's revealed in the 4th film. I know that you didn't had the wrong intention, but still. Hopefully she won't read this. Also, the fun in Harry Potter is trying to solve the pieces together and find out the whole thing in the end.

Enzo Reis

Same! Hahaha 😂

Brantly
>>159658668

I hope she does because you don’t know what you are talking about lol

this is why you're one of my favorite reactors sophie, you're so empathetic and invested in the story. i love the way you feel for harry so much you're correct yes, it's personality traits that the sorting hat analyzes. it will take your desires into account, i don't think it would just do that to harry. gryffindor- bravery, chivalry, determination, nerve, protectiveness hufflepuff- loyalty, hard work, fair-mindedness, honesty, patience ravenclaw- intelligence, creativity, wiseness, wit, open-mindedness slytherin- ambition, cunning, resourcefulness, strong sense of self preservation, heritage minerva mcgonnagal is the head of gryffindor house and teaches transfiguration, pomona sprout is the head of hufflepuff house and teaches herbology, filius flitwick is the head of ravenclaw house and teaches charms, and severus snape is the head of slytherin house and teaches potions. each of them was in the house they now head when they were students at hogwarts. i think harry's reactions tend to be vague because those are the moments in the book where we would be getting his inner monologue. the movies are great but they can't quite capture what it's like to read the books and actually get all of harry's thoughts. i urge you to read them, they're completely worth it even if you've seen the movies! they have SO much more detail, SO many more scenes, and SO much more information. like more than you can imagine. some things you could look foward to if you read the book this movie is based on is getting to hear a lot more about harry's childhood, getting to see more hogwarts life, more of the weasley family, much more neville and mconagall, more about quirrel, and more trials to get to the stone. mcgonagall actually played quidditch too, you can see her name next to james' when harry is looking at the trophy case! hermione could've told the truth about the troll situation if her only goal was to get them out of trouble, but she also wanted to get herself into trouble. she wanted to prove to the two of them that she was able to handle teachers thinking she's done something wrong. they really make harry look stupid by not having him run from the cloaked figure in the forest. in the book harry was in so much pain he could barely see and that's why he fell onto the ground and was trying to crawl away. his scar definitely effects him a LOT more in this book than in this movie. in the books devils snare's only weakness is fire, relaxing won't help- hermione completely panics about not having wood until ron reminds her to use her wand. they replaced this with a comedic scene that makes ron look really stupid, reducing his character the same way they did in the flying class scene- prioritize the comedy of ron getting hit in the face over the logic that, being from a wizarding family, ron has already had lots of practice flying. (which is the way it is in the books) ron riding the knight was a movie-only choice and i think it was a bad one. in the book he was standing on an empty square and when he was taken by the queen she hit him in the head with her metal sword then drags him off the board. there are still more trials left so they have to leave ron behind in that state. the scene is much more tense that way, especially because harry doesn't get to know ron's fate until he wakes up in the hospital wing. him and hermione are even considering the possibility he could be dead when trying to do the next challenge. i understand why ron didn't have anyone play as the king. you're protecting it anyway, so it's a good choice, BUT if he loses it's certain that one of them is taken. if he loses and they're playing as other pieces he managed to protect they can leave or maybe play again. you wouldn't necessarily want to play as the piece who has the biggest target on their back. also if you're the king you can't sacrifice yourself and he maybe thought there was a possibility he'd need to. in the books harry doesn't kill quirrel, and the burns are regular instead of reducing the affected area to ash. quirrel is choking harry and harry realizes his touch burns him, but it hurts harry to touch him too. once he realizes this is his only defense he puts both hands on quirrel's face and continues to burn him. harry is in SO much pain from touching quirrel he passes out, and that's when dumbledore arrives and pulls quirrel, who is still choking harry despite being burned, off of him. when voldemort realizes who's here he leaves quirrel's body and THAT is what his cause of death is. the lore with the house cup is that the slytherins had won every single year for a long time because of how biased snape was with giving and taking points. that's why all 3 houses cheer when gryffindor wins, not just them. the movies definitely get darker each time, so be prepared!

Enzo Reis

Yes, I know that the books already advance the story a little bit. But, > the movies < don't. They choose to leave the revelation for the films ahead and remembering the fact that Sophie is watching the films (still with no intention of reading the books) we must always consider the films. Do I agree with their choise? No! But it is what it is. And unfortunately this information takes the fun out of a scene in the future. Watching many reactors finally understanding everything about snape is top-notch. That's why I made a comment above asking to be careful with spoliers. For example, explaining how the hat chooses students is okay because the films don't explain it well and it's not information that will ruin the experience in any way.

gak9319

Child safety is very low on the list of priorities at Hogwarts😅

StasiaOne

You provided so much good information and details to just fill in the gaps enough without spoiling important things that come up in the next movies!! @Sofie, highly recommend you to read through this comment not once but multiple times

Oummie

Loved the reaction. I remember growing up the Harry potter movies were always shown on TV during the winter holidays, so it nice that you watched this movie on Christmas. It really takes me back. I can't wait for the next one.

Jackkk

LOVES THIS SOPHIE!! CAN'T WAIT FOR YOU TO KEEP WATCHING!! The movies definitely mature as they go on too btw!!

Andrea Dcosta

This was amazing Sophie. I cried along with you, HP series is one of my favorite series ever. Its everything and you reacting to its the best part for me. Thanks once again for this Sophie. Cant wait to see the entire Movie series of HP with you, its a experience of a lifetime. Its only gonna get better and better.

gak9319

The Queen is the most powerful piece, but once you checkmate the King the game is over.

gak9319

🎶Na na na na na wizard, na na na na na school, na na na na na wizard school na na na na wizard school🎶

Jane Thomas

Very well said. And i second about the books. I love all the movies. thats how i got into this universe and then i read all the books. But movies still misses a lot of things especially harry's SASS. and also harry and ron's friendship moments. Even reacting to audiobook will be good

Jane Thomas

during the christmas present part, you guessed correct in the beginning. Harry did got presents from ron's mom. In the books, Ron wrote a letter to his mom that harry's not expecting any gifts from his family so ron's mom knitted a similar sweater like the one ron is wearing and also lots of homemade sweets for harry. Its so sweet. Ron and harry's friendship is so sweet even more sweet in the books

Jane Thomas

lol i laughed so hard she said "i thought voldemort dont have a nose"

Thomas

I read somewhere that some of Ron's lines were rewritten and given to Hermione so she would come off as even more clever. Because not all of the book was used you don't get to see some of the things she says or does in the book.

Erik Poulsen

Sofie, when are we going to see Harry Potter and the Chamber of secrets?

Maurice

Exactly. There are spoilers everywhere.

Jane Thomas

she wrote in the post saying it will be uploaded on monday

Maurice

I love these movies, but I really dislike how they bring out the book readers that can’t stop comparing them. We get it the books are better as they should be. A movie would be too expensive and too long to make it word for word like the books. Plus talking about the books is just spoiling things for SoFie.

Sarah_M

Merry Christmas Sofie! So excited to see you start your HP journey. 💜💜💜

Garrick Smalley

I absolutely love watching these movies with new eyes Thank you Sofie for choosing them. As a werewolf I can assure you, you will not learn enough magic from these movies (books) to put your soul at risk. 😁🤣🤣

Garrick Smalley

Koala

You're REALLY riding the line of spoilers. Hint is that you're saying "in the books" plural, instead of "in the book." You should not be referencing future books at all. Your second paragraph about the sorting hat is literally a poignant conversation in a scene in an upcoming movie. That's a spoiler, even though Sofie guessed as much already. And then you straight up say future movies "get darker," which is literally talking about what happens in future movies, just vaguely. Yellow flag.

Koala

Hint: don't talk about future movies AT ALL.

Koala Banana
>>159658668

Almost directly quoting future movies and future books. Including the literal climax of the franchise. Stop it.

Thomas

Nice you created a paradox. By saying don't talk about future movies you're talking about future movies. So why would you ask something of me that you are incapable of yourself?

Jeylee107

I completly agree with the broom part, that doesnt make sense, but I guess with the devils snare the reason hermione solves it could also be because they left out the last riddle after the chessboard. so harry takes charge with the keys, ron with chess and hermione with the devils snare

esme

i removed the part about choices- i don't think it was a spoiler but i understand why you don't want me analyzing that part yet. the part about "in the books" i've also changed to say "in this book" because that's what i should've said to clarify my point best anyway, which was- harry's scar hurts him and has more focus in the PS book than it does in the PS movie. the pain is more severe and happens more often. i'm not gonna change much more because it seems you're the only one who thinks this is spoilery, people have gone out of their way to compliment how NOT spoilery it is. oh and an edit about the "they get darker" thing- that is not a spoiler, that is a courtesy. people sometimes need some forewarning when the kids movies they're watching start having themes of SPOILERS FOR SOPHIE DON'T READ racism, genocide, and corrupt government. telling reactors the movies get darker is very common in this fandom and it's just a nice thing to do.

SnyderVick

The problem is you are spoiling that there is a reason behind snape behavior, taking out any surprise that comes with it

Thomas

I didn't spoiling it. She noticed it in this movie already. She didn't know the reason but she noticed that there is a reason. Because "surprise" you don't treat students like that without a reason. I don't know what you think of Sofie but clearly she is smarter then you give her credit for. Because that was the whole reason I said this spoiler free. Because she noticed it and asked about it.

Brantly
>>159658668

From the 1st book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Chapter 17: “But why couldn’t Quirrell touch me? “Your mother died to save you. If there is one thing Voldemort cannot understand, it is love. He didn’t realize that love as powerful as your mother’s for you leaves its own mark. Not a scar, no visible sign…to have been loved so deeply, even though the person who loved us is gone, will give us some protection forever. It is in your very skin. Quirrell, full of hatred, greed, and ambition, sharing his soul with Voldemort, could not touch you for this reason. It was agony to touch a person marked by something so good.” Next time you accuse someone of spoiling future movies or the future book material, you should make sure your facts are straight instead of being a Karen over literally nothing. 😂

Koala

You're clearly confused. You even said yourself you don't want to spoil it, so you "wont say in which film" it occurs. Except that's not the spoiler part. Saying what happens is the spoiler part, and that's what you did. Leaving out which movie doesn't help. And no, there's no paradox. Saying "don't talk about future movies" under a comment that says 'in later movies, this is explained' is not adding to the spoiler at all. Any time you're talking about future movies at all you're doing a spoiler.

Koala Banana
>>159658668

I wont quote the spoiler again in this comment to argue with you Brantly, but exactly what happened to Voldemort that night is not explained using the words you used until the 8th movie. It is revealed in dramatic fashion and you just put it plainly in your comment. Go watch the movie again and see what you did.

Thomas

I didn't say what happens. She noticed that Snapr acted weird to Harry. Then she asked about it and because it's explained in a future movies didn't tell her. I just confirmed that she will now the answer as a reason why I didn't have the answer. There was not a single spoiler in my message. I only said things she knew already. If you think otherwise you didn't pay attention to her commentary during the movie. And yes you used the words future movies so that's talking about future movies. So you asked me to do something you where incapable of yourself.

Koala

Saying "dont talk about future movies" is not talking about future movies, genius. It's like literally the opposite of that. Things being explained is a thing that happens. Saying a thing will be explained is saying what will happen. Not complicated.

Thomas

Yes because you said don't talk about future movies so the thing you said about the future movies is to not talk about it. So yes you also talked about future movies. No that doesn't say what happens. Saying that it will be explained says nothing about what will happen. It could be that Snape hate Harry because he is Griffindor. Maybe Snape disliked that he injured Voldemort. Or maybe Snape choose random to hate a student. What I said didn't reveal what happens because the possibilities what happens is still endless. In my comment non of the possibilities where excluded.

Michaela Julia

28:55 "Does the wand choose you?" Wow... already decrypted the whole universe LOL

Hotcheese1309

Growing up as well I wasn't allowed to watch the movies for same reasons as you, but now as an adult I never really bothered to watch them anyways, coming back to your patreon seeing you watching it for the first time makes me wanna watch it too for the first time so here we gooo, excited to watch it with you

Stella Keil

you know I read some books that mentioned Nicholas Flamel before I got to Harry Potter, so I was always wondering why he kept showing up in literature and why always in connection with the philosophers stone. So when I came across this guy in Harry Potter, I was like: yeah, that's it. I'm looking him up. That's how I found out that he's in fact not fictional. You're the first person that I've seen recognizing his name

Stella Keil

2:06:20 "Snape is always looking at Harry like he is having a Dejavu or something." Wow, that is a scarily accurate interpretation

Ира Скипчак

The cool movie and cool reaction on the him, thanks for your of the work, but the books better, the movies missed actually very important and interesting things for me and this universe.

Killuanatsume

''Think my name is funny'' well, Draco means Dragon and Malfoy means Bad faith so...Dragon Badfaith.

Remus was one of the creators of the map. The front reads “Messrs Moony (Remus, werewolf ergo moon-y), Wormtail (Peter Pettigrew, rat), Padfoot ( Sirius, black dog), and Prongs (James Potter as his Petronus and Animagas form was a stag). Sirius, James, and Peter became animagi to support Remus during his full moon transformations and keep him safe

I just realized, I’ll never not be mad they didn’t use the quidditch commentary from the books. Lee Jordan provided top tier play by plays. 😂

Also, I know I’m late and you may not see this, but I NEED you to know that Ron’s mom DID make Harry a sweater. 🥹

AnoTher reason yhey know hardy is his fathers side family were inventors his ancestor was super rich from inventing a healing potion

I liked this reaction. Really felt like being a kid again watching this, since these movies are basically my childhood. Definitely prefer sync-along style though, especially when the movie is only barely visible. I'd rather have it played on my Oled screen and surround system. But I enjoyed this nonetheless :)

Squeebers

I may or may not type up a block comment. Apologies if I do. I love Harry Potter! The first 3 movies are probably the most accurate to the books even though they missed A LOT! HBO is insane for attempting to make this into a tv show. I think they are going to get a lot wrong. But if they stay as accurate to the books as possible (despite the inaccurate Snape) there is hope. Professor McGonagall is an Animagus meaning she can transform herself into an animal at will. in her case a cat. Each wizard can only do this with one animal and only if they have the skill and discipline to learn. They also must register with the ministry of magic. Muggles are normal people. 8:50 This is actually an upgrade from the book. The glass doesn't reappear in the book from what I remember. I quite like the added bit of Dudley getting trapped in the snake's habitat. Daniel Radcliffe tried to wear green eye contacts for the films but his eyes got too irritated and red so they had to stick with his blue eyes. The green eyes are very significant in the book. For reasons I will elaborate on eventually if it's not clear when the time comes in these reactions. 13:00 All these letters were done practically. I am pretty sure most were hand-written on the envelope at least. 22:30 Pretty sure the brick wall was done practically somehow. 30:45 I didn't realize the context of this scene for someone who hadn't read the books. You have NO IDEA about Voldemort really at this point! Incredible writing! 32:20 WHOAH! Why you gotta blow my mind like that!!!! HOLY COW! What an apt name for him! I have been a Harry Potter fan since I was 7! How are you bringing me new context to it?!? 35:40 When magic like that happens there are enchantments around it to keep muggles from seeing. Mainly used for places where Wizards and Witches have to phase through stuff. Or when there is a magic gathering. 45:17 Those candles were practical and they were actually lit and burning. Being held up by string they would sometimes burn the string by accident and fall down. No one was hurt. LOL 46:56 Hermione was a hat stall (meaning the hat took more than 5 minutes to decide where to put the student) She almost ended up in Ravenclaw. 48:00 Not all Slytherins are bad. I am a Slytherin. 49:05 The reason Ron was so nervous is because his whole family is Gryffindor. He was terrified of being placed in a different house. 50:57 You can influence the hat with you really don't want a certain house. In your heart. 58:00 Snape is my favorite character! He's amazing! There is a very good reason he is mean to Harry. It's isn't excusing his behavior. But his character is so deep. 1:02:21 Her eyes are striking and beautiful for sure! 1:04:30 OH it gets worse!!! 1:13:35 So what Wood says here isn't ENTIRELY true. Catching the Snitch does end the game. But it isn't a guaranteed win. It is worth 150 points. The big professional games sometimes will go for days and days and the seeker will catch the Snitch just to end the game. Even if their team is down by more than 150 points. 1:28:17 Actually, no. You are meant to hit the bludgers towards the other players. It is a bit scummy for a Chaser to take up a Beater's bat. 1:47:45 Dumbledore put it here on purpose to see what Harry's desires were. He had to figure out a way that Harry could get the stone but not Quirrel/Voldemort. 1:54:40 Short answer is no one hired him. For further explanation, he is a poltergeist of sorts. One that is bent upon keeping the rules. In the books there is another poltergeist named Peeves. He is more bent on causing chaos. 1:59:35 Firenze!!!! We love him! 2:18:34 There were pieces missing already... He could've chosen the king. Or when they stepped foot on the board the board automatically magically made three spaces available for them to occupy. 2:20:37 Once the king falls in chess that's game over. Queen is just the OP one that can go anywhere. 2:34:50 I have something to say! Slytherin had won the house cup 6 years in a row. This would have been the 7th. Meaning there were students in Slytherin who would have won the house cup every year they had been at Hogwarts. The 7th years are graduating. THIS makes me mad because as far as we know there are good Slytherins and not all of them deserved to have this taken from them. Especially the 7th years. But this is not mentioned in the movie. it is just a burn in the book. 2:35:16 Even Snape is like, "Come on Dumbledore!" I love these movies so much! I love the books!

Johan Gudmundsson

Omg, i'm so jelous you get to watch the movies for the first time as an adult! Wish I could watch them for the first time all over :D
