The actor who plays Lucy (Rachel Zagler) said in a interview: "Lucy is a performer who had to learn how to fight. Katniss was a fighter that had to learn how to perform."

I love how Dean says to Snow "and mysteries have a way to hunt us down" it's like after Snow decided that Lucy wasn't sutible for him anymore and that he would never own her, he not only decided to flip but he immediately did everything possible to erase any trace of her. But she's everywhere. By our accounts, we know that President Snow was elected around the 15th Hunger Games. He was already a mentor and would continue for a while, until he decided others would take his place, and we arrive at Seneca Crane. I find it curious and ironic that every time Snow crowned a victor from some district, he would be crowning Lucy again. It's as if he could never escape her and her mystery; that's what makes him angry. It's as if all this time, he's been searching for her again, as if he's going to have this insight and BOOM, everything is well and justified, and they are this pair, this duo of two survivors, creating a game, a secret language that only they understand in a bigger game. It's as if he's trying to feel that again, searching for her, to have a justification for everything he did. But he doesn't have one, and didn't have one until the day he died. And I think that's why he became so obsessed with Katniss, because he saw so much of Lucy through her. It's like he had a part of herself in Katniss, and he needed to contain and own that part of her. Also, this is pretty well translated in "Catch Me Now" the song written for Olivia Rodrigo for this movie she understood it well.

Excited to watch this! I was also wondering if you’d consider watching We Were Liars. It’s an 8 episode series, and one of the actors is going to play young Haymitch. I really liked it, and it has a great twist Also glad you're feeling better ❤️

The last scene at the lake was framed differently in the book. From what I remember, she made an excuse to leave the cabin so she could get away after realizing he'd betrayed his best friend and she'd never be able to trust him. I think the movie was trying to give something for Snow to react to and justify his paranoid spiral, but the direction stumbled a bit on the side of making Lucy Gray look suspicious. "He wanted her to be safe, but safe in a way he could manage." You nailed it. There's a passage in the book that made my head spin so hard, I had to take a photo and text it to a friend with some "WTF?" commentary: "He felt trapped here on base, while she could freely roam the night. In some ways, it had been better to have her locked up in the Capitol, where he always had a general idea of what she was doing." SIR???? I might have found the mystery of Lucy Gray's fate unsatisfying if it weren't for the fact that it tormented Snow HIS ENTIRE LIFE. The movie adaptation of Sunrise on the Reaping (Haymitch's games) will be out this November. IMO, it's one of the best books in the series.

I can't wait to see your reaction to Pirates of the Caribbean!! Thanks for all your amazing content. I follow you from Italy, so forgive my imperfect English <3

I don’t know, if you noticed.. but Tigris also appears in the fourth Hunger Games movies, where she gives shelter to Katniss and the group.. she looks very different, though. And one of the girls in the reaping is called Heavensbee, like the gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee.

I viewed it as Snow growing more paranoid by the second in that scene. He was overthinking of what Lucy Gray had said. And the music also helped with the tone of the scene. So maybe Lucy Gray didn't want to appear to be suspicious, but in Snow's mind she was. And since we're meant to be in Snows POV, we also feel his suspicion of Lucy Gray, as well.

I'll always recommend We Were Liars! Joseph was great in that and it looks like he's gonna be a great Haymitch!!

The book is very different since it's from Snow's internal POV, of course, but honestly I personally prefer the movie's version of the story. The movie feels like he maybe could have gone the other way if someone like Gaul hadn't prodded and fostered that ambitious potential in him, or even if Dean Highbottom hadn't (ironically, considering the premise of the Games) been so insistent on punishing the child for his father's sins. Monsters aren't born, people become them. And it's neat to see a version of Snow hovering between Sejanus/Tigris/Lucy's humanity and his own ambition/clawing for survival + Gaul's guile and promises of power. The latter inevitably winning out feels sadder, rather than him just being a pure sociopathic 'born that way' villain imo, especially because wowzers what a truly abhorrent villain he grows into. Young Snow was absolutely still strategic, calculating, and leant heavily towards self-preservation like the Future Snow we all know, but it doesn't feel like his path was set in stone (in the movie version) until Sejanus gets killed instead of being bailed out by his parents like Snow expected.
