Ross is going through a messy divorce so I think Rachel just sitting and waiting for him to get better would be weird. She also met Danny previously so she is seeing how that is going to work. I don’t think it is strange for Rachel to move on while Ross figures things out.

Right. And his relationship with Emily was very intense, and it wasn’t like he was on the fence about making it work, he was all in, he was willing to sell all his furniture, move apartments, cut Rachel out of his life… if I was Rachel, I would not be going anywhere near him as anything more than a friend until he was back on his feet and I was 100% sure he wanted a relationship with me and wasn’t just on the rebound. Plus, like I said, he was willing to cut Rachel out of his life for Emily. Again, if I was Rachel, even if I understood why he felt he had to do it for the sake of his marriage, I would be hurt, even if I didn’t hold it against him. 🤷‍♀️

Your love for Monica and Chandler is everything. 🥰 Yeah Rachel met Chandler for the first time 3 times. In the pilot episode, in the flashback and in this episode. I've seen some people explain it by saying Rachel was just so self involved back then she just didn't even remember meeting him. Im going with that lol

That explanation actually makes sense. Rachel barely even paid attention to Ross, let alone his college roommate who she only saw once a year.

Regarding the timeline and who met who when...don't worry about it too much, just go with it. It's not that important. In sitcoms in the 90s there was less attention paid to plot holes like that. Just ignore and laugh.

I feel the same way. And even though the creators themselves have admitted they were being a bit inconsistent, I still think it checks out. Rachel in the beginning of the show was very self-absorbed, so I could easily buy that Rachel would forget already meeting Chandler and down the line, after growing see her finally remembering him. I could totally see Chandler not wanting to call her out on it too, especially when she was in such an emotional state in the Pilot and why would you want to bring up when you lost your toe. And in The One With The Flashback they saw each other for like a few seconds, I forget people's faces the next day, let alone 3 years later. You also can't really go by too much with Pilot episodes, most Pilot episodes are usually inconsistent because they are finding their footing and what they want to do with the characters. They don't even know if they'll even last all season. Typically by season 2 is when they find their way for the show.

That would explain it, but then Chandler didn’t recognize her when they met in the flashback episode where Central Perk was a bar. There were just several inconsistencies in the series, but I choose not to think about them. 😂 It’s one of those things where you just have to suspend disbelief and let the minor details slide, and I rarely have trouble doing that with shows I love that are so good in every other way that it doesn’t detract from anything at all. 💜

Throwing salt over your left shoulder like Phoebe did is an old superstition, it's supposed to help against bad luck. It originates in the belief spread by the church that the left side is evil and the devil (or other evil spirits) sometimes lurks behind you on your left side, so you throw salt in his eyes to make him go away.

Rachel trying to get Danny by pretending not to want Danny was played to the most ridiculous (and funny) extent. But interestingly enough, on an unconscious level this is what she does with her relationship to Ross too. After confessing her love and getting burnt, she now pretends to not care and moving on. And often when she says she does not care, in reality she does, she just wants the other party care about her too and show it to her. (Unlike with the Danny situation I don't think Rachel is aware she does that, I think she really think she wants to move on.)

I would not say she was more self involved than Ross or Chandler. They were all pretty much in their own worlds, just like normal teenagers exaggerated 1000 times. She seemed quite involved with Monica, the one who was her friend. Ross for her was only Monica's geeky older brother she did not pay much attention to, and Chandler was this random guy, Ross brought to Thanksgiving twice. I don't think she realized in the Pilot that that was the same guy (different hair, different behavior and all.)

The apartment size may seem extra small for comedic purpose, but I've actually seen tiny studios like this in New York City and the rent is a small fortune...🤔🙈

Yes! Exactly. I was too tired to explain it all but you said it perfectly. Ross was going to cut Rachel out of his life (we knew he wouldn’t but it’s the fact he considered it) he was trying to make his sham of a marriage work. Rachel for once was smart to not continue to try to go after him or complicate things even further while he was in that emotional state.

Your reaction to the thanksgiving episode has probably been one of my favourites so far. Your laugh at '87 Chandler and Ross. Your shock at Monica probably choosing her career path because of an offhand comment from Chandler. And crying at I love you. So cute. All of it.

When I was really little, my grandmother made me do that, literally by holding my arm and forcing the motion. When I asked why, she said, "Or else the devil will be happy." I was always stunned by how little sense that made, even by superstition standards. Your explanation makes more sense.

I can relate to Monica's sudden weight loss motivation. I had a drinking problem for 7 years. Drinking like a fish almost daily. I'm now 15 months sober because a person I really don't like, who had already had such a negative impact on my life called me an alcoholic loser. Just in case I accidentally give the wrong impression, I'm not for a second saying we should be thankful to those who hurt us, even if it did lead us to make healthy changes. I'm merely pointing out that if it stings bad enough, sometimes a single comment really can be the catalyst for a life altering shift.
