Alyssa Dyson

my first time watching this as well! wheeeee.

Edo

I remember I was in Junior High when this came out and I hadn't seen it in theatres but we were all talking about how incredible the special fx and the outfits are! What an incredible film. To think that Will Smith passed on this movie and almost took the role of Neo, and Val Kilmer potentially as Morpheus! And to think Will Smith instead chose to focus on Wild Wild West lol. He has a funny youtube video explaining why he passed on it!

Edo

Honestly Sofie, I think you should react to the Animatrix! Its a series of different animated shorts about stories involving the Matrix, and it also contains a prologue better explaining how the Matrix and mankind and machines came to be. I think its worth reacting to more than the 2nd and 3rd movies lol. Anyone agree?

Kevin Karst

Great reaction! - The hype around this movie in 1999 was unreal. People at my school were talking about it for weeks, I've never seen anything like that before or after. One of my classmates saw it eight (!) times at the cinema. Also, The Matrix had a huge influence on other movies and shows in the early 2000's, especially the slow-mo / bullet time scenes (the Buffy vs. Adam fight scene from episode 4x21 is a good example) and the leather clothes with sunglasses. Daredevil and especially Underworld tried so hard to be The Matrix it was actually funny in a very cringy way. - "Stop trying to hit me and hit me" is basically the Matrix version of Yoda's "Do or do not. There is no try." There are definitely some parallels between this movie and Star Wars. - "Neo" is an anagram for "one" --> the Chosen One

Vifki

The clothes they wear inside the matrix is their self image rendered as code. They are awakened so they naturally look like they stand out and powerful at the same time

Hot Space 🚀

One of my favourite films of all time! It's soooo fricken epic. Hope you'll react to the others. :-)

Sofie must've been like what.. 4 years old when this movie released? How time flies.

SidekickSteph

Haven’t watched this in over a decade, and never watched a reactor do this movie yet, so this is a first for me too 😊 was a pleasure to watch as always!

krissy

I don’t know if I love the characters or the story more in this film. The plot concept is *chefs kiss,* Morpheus is so cool and wise, Trinity is a badass AND a baddie, and Neo is literally Keanu Reeves. Plus Agent Smith is iconic. I don’t know the actor’s name, but he’s been in Marvel and Lord of the Rings as well—I think due to how iconic this role was.

Macs

This is my first post here, I only just joined Sofies paetron mainly for the AoT reactions and of course getting all the other reactions I haven't seen yet. But with the helicopter scene what Neo did is 2 things. One move really fast to get the harness rope and Two made the skyscraper the helicopter was crashing into kinda soft I guess? he made it so the helicopter wouldn't explode immediately, meaning trinity had time to swing away from it and survive the explosion.

guvkon.net

I don't think he's actually done anything there except to hold onto Trinity who disconnected the rope from the helicopter.

Pekka

This movie is iconic. I watched it first time as a kid and didn't understand some of the themes at the time, happy to have rewatched it now here! The original one is very thought-provoking, very unique. There are a couple of sequels but they aren't really anything like the original. They're not bad as action movies, but they're very standard action movies (one has like 15 mins long car chase scene).

Raquel

I love this movie. I’ve seen it many times, and for a few years, I haven’t seen it, and it’s always a pleasure. It’s one of those films that, despite the years, never gets old. I love the plot, I love the aesthetics, and I love the characters... Trinity is amazing, Morpheus is brilliant, and Agent Smith... I mean, please... he's always great. And Neo is Keanu Reeves, so... without words, I just love him.

DeusSilvam

Hugo Weaving. He really did have a legendary run of roles from 1999 to 2003, as Agent Smith/Elrond. But I also love him in V for Vendetta as well.

krissy

That’s him! Thank you.

Macs

maybe but the skyscraper still idk "ripples" like a pond like its absorbing the impact of the helicopter before it explodes. I've been wondering about that scene for ages since I saw it in the cinema as a kid.

Elsa Millie

Watching this movie for the first time along with you. I've recently fallen down the Keanu Reeves rabbit hole. He's so incredible!!! I can't state it enough... if your looking for another movie to add to a poll. Keanu has a great action movie called "Speed". In my opinion it's the greatest action movie ever 😁

Edo

I think the ripples in the skyscraper was just to show how super slow motion collision looks like, maybe or maybe not embellished a bit just like how they did hte bullet time w/ the bullets skimming past him through the air.

Saem

I agree. The first movie stands perfectly on its own, but without The Animatrix, the second and third can feel more like straight up action movies.

Macs

ok yea that makes sense, lol I think I've had the wrong idea about that scene for years

Dosboy

This is incredible! First, because you know nothing about it, and it's such a classic, I get to relive that first-time experience all over again! Second, the story it tells is as old as humanity itself. It reflects what’s truly happening in our world, and it’s a narrative found repeatedly in various religions, especially Christianity. Regardless of the theme, I believe in its message. We really are in a dream world, unaware of true reality. His sliding down the tube represents his "second birth" or awakening to that reality, which happens to all of us at some point whether in our current body or not.

Alyssa Dyson

im 37 and i just had that boom ding lightbulb moment this year lol it was so surreal and unexplainable which is why I think when people experience it they turn to religion a lot of the times.

Randy Giles

Yeah, this movie was a cultural phenomenon. So many movies parodied/referenced/copied it. It was impossible to escape that hype.

Alex

If I’m not mistaken, Madonna also turned down the role of Trinity. It could’ve felt like a very different movie had everyone offered it knew what it would turn into

David

I hope you'll watch the rest. Its still a great trilogy.

Roni

Nice! :-) I saw the trilogy in cinema and also owned the first on DVD as far as I can remember... Nobody should be ashamed to feel confused - if you ever watch Taskmaster, James Acaster brought it in in season 7 as his "Most confusing thing" ;-) As for "taking pills from strangers": look on Youtube for "If Neo was Austrian" - that is some very cute satirical cartoon. The same channel also offers a version of Middle Earth which is a true masterpiece (with English subtitles, but the latter can only be properly understood if you know the nuances of Austrian dialects - various characters speak in different dialects.)

Mike Briere

Agent Smith....a.k.a. Lord Elrond! Not sure if you made that connection or not....this was the first movie I ever saw him in.....such an awesome actor

mrspoer

Thank you for making this <3 Will you one day make a reaction for The Matrix 2 and 3? <3

Kater

Why only 1 of the 3 movies?☹️
