Ricardo B,

edit: I've watched it all and don't want to discourage anyone from watching because the reaction is great as usual. There are however certain scenes taken out or shortened, which impacts both the clarity and the rhythm to some degree. The miggs scene in particular is so impactful that sofie didn't even get why Lecter was calling her back. Ambulance scene being trimmed is problematic as well. Sofie was right to be suspect about the runtime. I suggest we assume censorship next time. Great Reaction as always. ------ The version you watched is ridiculously censored. I've only watched until the first meeting with Hannibal, and already they do massive cuts. Even not showing miggs throwing his disgusting stuff at her face. I can only imagine how much more they cut out. I think we found why the version is missing minutes. I'll watch the rest but the fact that this version even exists is obscene to me. Why censor such a movie? Surely, no young person should ever watch it. This made me quite upset. I've never seen censorship like this. Absurd.

Kevin B.

I havent watched it yet but that angers me also I will still watch but its a shame that sophie watched a lesser cut version

While the censorship is a bummer, I know this was the only copy of the film available to you, so there’s nothing you can do about that. Such a disturbing, intense, but brilliant movie! Very few people have played a creepy character as well as Anthony Hopkins played Lecter. Fun fact: Hopkins won his first Academy Award for this movie despite only having about 16 mins of screen time. I’m so glad you enjoyed this one! Great reaction and commentary, as always!

Nanners

It is a shame but it was the only version available to watch in her country.

Ashley

So I'm looking up what was censored in the youtube version (which i believe is the one Sofie watched?) and the main thing I've seen is the sexual assault/harassment scene with Miggs. Sofie, in case you're wondering it's in the first scene where she meets Hannibal. One of the other prisoners masturbates and throws his... stuff at her while she's leaving. As you saw yourself cutting it made the scene and Hannibal's reaction confusing. The same prisoner also said he could smell her cunt when she walked in but they cut out the word. It seems like they censored some curse words in general. Apparently Hannibal's escape is also less graphic in this but since you don't like gruesome things maybe that was for the better lol.

coffeelove2001

i love this <3 your commentary is always so intelligent & fun you have the best reaction videos out of anyone ive ever watched tbh

Ricardo B,

Changes I noticed: - Migg scene, Pembrey displayed, Lecter on ambulance cut short, the full body Buffalo Bill shot, and I think I remember the scene of Bill and moths was a bit more extended. There may be other small changes, because the pacing felt a bit odd to me in places. It's not disastrous, but it's disappointing(and unnecessary), because the movie is so perfectly edited that these changes feel to me like repainting a masterwork.

Ashley

The worst cut for me was Miggs because it takes away important context for why the encounter was harrowing for Clarice, if you don't pick up on what he did. She was assaulted. Cutting that and the profanity directed at her sanitizes what she experienced in the scene and it changes the context of Hannibal's reaction to it.

frangolin0

"fun" fact, Jodie Foster was actually terrified by Anthony Hopkins after the first table read that she would avoid him most of the times between takes, they spoke barely during the making of the movie.

Macs

bit of trivia anthony hopkins (hannibal) snuck into a theater wearing sunglasses to watch the movie guess he was curious what peoples reactions would be their was a thunder storm and the movie cut out, someone yelled out "It's a blackout, I think Hannibal Lecter's in the theater!" at which point with people looking around Hopkins took off his sunglasses and just stared at the guy doing his Lecter stare thing. Sounds made up but it was hopkins who told the story. Also if you want more of his Hannibal watching Red Dragon at some point the prequel is good

Saem

Aside from the scene with Miggs, I think there aren't any cuts that significantly damage the film's story, but there are meaningful moments, so whoever decided to cut those scenes, I think it is crime for the cinema Sofie's reaction was amazing as always. The cut scenes were, Some of the more graphic Buffalo Bill case photos on the wall in Crawford's office. The scene where Miggs throws *** at Clarice. The trainee sparring scene before Clarice and Crawford leave to examine the victim found in the river was shortened. The more graphic portions of the victim photos shown in the airplane. The shots showing the victim's full body during the autopsy. The bodies of the police officers killed by Hannibal. The shot that clearly shows police officer's crucified corpse. The shot that clearly shows Hannibal wearing Pembry's face as a disguise. Buffalo Bill's dance scene where he tucks his penis between his legs and poses like a moth spreading its wings. The shots that clearly show the clothes made from women's skin. Buffalo Bill's body after being shot.

Macs

Cutting the scene in the ambulance was just bizarre, it not even gory, some of these censorship cuts were very strange.

Ricardo B,

Prequels are not worth it IMO. They are completely different works.

Eric Church

i could be wrong but it looks like she fixed it the quality looks much clearer now then it did yesterday

Dylan Hamilton

If you loved the character of Lecter, I cant recommend the Hannibal TV show enough!

Jon

The censored or cut-out scenes are quite crucial, nevertheless great reaction and commentary as usual Sofie.

Jocelyn

i’ve never seen this movie but have always wanted to! excited to watch with you.

Randy Giles

Yes, it's an excellent show. I like it more than the movies to be honest.

Randy Giles

I liked Red Dragon. Not as good as Silence, but the cast was excellent, especially Ralph Fiennes

Ashley

I really loved your commentary and appreciation for the film. The dynamic between Hannibal and Clarice definitely steals the show for me. She breaks every rule they give her about interacting with him despite having no illusions about how dangerous he is and what he's capable of. Don't approach the glass: She presses herself against it and him through the glass in their first meeting. Don't tell him anything personal: She shares her deepest trauma with him. Don't accept anything from him: She accepts the towel for her hair and later reaches into the cage to take the case file. It's why him touching her hand feels so meaningful. All of their scenes were building up to that moment.

Macs

I was just thinking if she wants more of lecter, red dragon is far better then 'Hannibal' the movie imo, its not silence of the lambs of course but I still think its pretty good

Kal

Yeah, Mads really killed it in the role (pun unintended), the cinematography is also superb, and damn did they go all out with the food presentation...

Kal

Great reaction as always, too bad they hired a butcher for the censoring, but you got what was implied so it's not too bad. If you want to watch another great movie with Jodie Foster, I recommend Contact . Fun fact: Jodie Foster is fluent in French and she did her own dubbing for a long time.

SidekickSteph

Please vote for Project Hail Mary!! She’d love it!!!

Kenzie

One of my favorite tidbits about this film is that they had originally considered filming a flashback for the scene where Clarice explains what happened at the ranch with the lambs, as they weren't sure it would be compelling/exciting enough with just the back and forth between Clarice and Lecter. However, when they filmed the scene, Jodie Foster was so good they didn't even bother filming the flashback. Though I voted for The Sixth Sense (because Toni Collette is the queen of my heart), this is one of my favorite movies. It's one I've stopped and watched on TV a million times while flipping through channels, so I'm kind of used to the censorship - having said that, some of the pieces that are missing are extremely impactful/iconic, even if ultimately unnecessary to the film's plot. The moment with Miggs is super confusing in this version, though. Without it, it's unclear why Lecter freaked out and Clarice cried at her car, as she was rattled from an assault. Anyway, while I'm here, let me please add to the chorus of voices calling for Project Hail Mary. It's so good and I can't wait for Sofie's reaction!

Shannon

Loved your reaction! I’d love to see you do Hannibal as well, even though Julianne Moore replaces Jodie Foster - I still really enjoy it!

Matthew

It's sad that we live in a world where YouTube has decided to treat everyone like babies. Parents should decide what is appropriate for their children to watch. There are countless apps that are available to them for this purpose.

Luisa Izzicupo

Amazing reaction, as always! It was fantastic watching this again with you :3

Michael Gehrman

You did a great job, and I especially love how you go back to review lines you missed. However, unfortunately this version was edited to remove very significant moments, which was a real shame. It's a crime by whoever cut those scenes, since this is one of the best movies of all time, with multiple Academy Awards. The movie version deserved better treatment.

Michael Gehrman

I disagre; I htink those cuts did a lot of damage to the emotional impact of the movie overall. Considering the quality of this great movie, it was a real crime to cut all of those moments out, to dumb everything down.

Michael Gehrman

Yes, the other movies are lame, although Red Dragon was the best of them, and wasn't bad.

Saem

My point about it not "significantly damaging the story" was more about the core plot structure(story) than emotional side(direction) I just wanted to make Sofie feel better and reassure her that she didn't watch a fundamentally broken film narrative wise. But I completely agree with you on the emotional and directorial side. Those deleted moments added much depth and nuance, and cutting them out for the sake of "dumbing it down" really was a huge loss. So as I said, those were meaningful moments, and cutting them was a crime to cinema.

Link Link

i think this is a censored version? the guy at 14:18 says "I can smell your cunt" but it was censored out in that version I guess.

Link Link

Wonder if you'll watch Hannibal 2001 ?

Michael Gehrman

You did a really great job with this! This is the best reaction I have seen of this, and it induced me to sign up for your patreon to see the uncut version. I love it that you stopped to make sure you understood all of the dialogue, and you thoughts on it were intelligent and perceptive.
