Why We Fight

During World War II, Angel works with the U.S. Navy to recover a German U-boat with captured American sailors on board, as well as a secret cache of vampires.

This is one of the weaker episodes of the season, but thankfully, every episode after this is excellent in my opinion. I don't think this episode is "bad" by any means, it's just that it was impossible to live up to the greatness of the previous episode.

I know most people feel ehh about this episode but I really like it. I think that guy who played the navy guy turned vamp had a good story and I fell bad for him to and enjoyed the parallels to what Angel is going through at WRH.

I didn't catch that part either. I guess this episode could also be viewed as an origin story for The Initiative from Buffy S4 then.

Regarding the timeline - Are You Now or Have You Ever Been was in 1952 - this was during World War II, in 1943.

My favorite ironic exchange... Angel: "I'm not getting trapped at the bottom of the sea!" Spike: "Well I'm not getting experimented on by his government!"

My favorite part of the episode is where Lawson avoids knocking over Fred when he falls back. Also of note. Lawson talks about his "ace in the hole" if Angel were to kill him when they first met. That's supposed to be that he has the crew captured and ready to hang. But in reality if Angel would have killed Lawson then he would have searched the building and saved the gang anyways. I think Lawson wanted that, otherwise he would have put them in a more time sensitive situation.
