There was a historical Jubal Early. He was an officer in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. My favorite bit of trivia about him is that when he was a cadet at the West Point military academy, he once made another cadet so angry the guy smashed a dinner plate over Early's head. My headcanon is that he kept asking if the plate still had a purpose when all the food was eaten.

Early is my favorite villain of the series. He was scary at times, but also made me laugh as well, like the scene where he randomly licks a pole. I could never tell if he had some sort of psychic abilities or if he was just an eccentric weirdo. In the very first scene, River actually hears Early and it's what wakes her up. I didn't pick up on that on my first viewing, but it tells you how far in advance she knew about him, and why she had so much time to prepare her strategy. One thing I've always been unclear on: Why does River see the gun as a tree branch? Hopefully a fan can reply to this with the answer.

According to the IMDB trivia section, Whedon named the character that after discovering Nathan Fillion was related to the history Jubal Early. Not sure if it's true or not.

Early is my favorite villain of the series too. Smart and scary.

This has been such a fun journey. It's such a shame the show ended early, these last couple of episodes were never even televised... I especially love the opening to this episode, the glimpses into Rivers mind. Really looking forward to the movie. One of my top 3-4 favorite movies.

I’m sad that the series is over but so glad that you have loved these characters Sofie. Really looking forward to your movie reaction!

Just as Early was a reflection of River, the "villain" of the Serenity movie provides insight into Shepherd Book. No details, but a glimpse that hints at his backstory.

I feel like there is so much amazing philosophy and character study in this episode that I can't ever detangle it all, every time i watch it I gain a new insight about it (or i think i do 😛). It's gotta be one of Whedon's best pieces of art for sure. Edit : on this episode's Wikipedia page it says "Whedon has said that if he were forced to pick one piece of work to represent his entire body of work, he would pick this episode."
