Sivan

Walt and Gretchen used to be together. She was in the flashback scene where they’re discussing the chemical makeup of the human body by percentages. It’s not in the show, but the writers said that Walt broke up with Gretchen, and sold his shares of Gray Matter for a tiny amount, after meeting her family and seeing how wealthy they were. He felt he’d never measure up. Then the company took off, Gretchen and Elliot got married, and Walt was left in the dust. He screwed himself.

Yep, Gretchen is the woman from the flashback in Episode 3. This is one of those details first-time viewers might not pick up on since she wasn't named in Episode 3 and isn't formally introduced until this episode. That's why Breaking Bad is such a rewatchable show: You notice a lot of things on repeat viewings that you didn't notice the first time watching.

Yeah Sivan that's totally it. I never heard that stuff "the writers said" (I assume Vince G and maybe Peter?) but i knew it had to have been similar - Gretchen being from a rich family was what eluded me. And Sofie it's easy to miss this, at this point. You've been making up for that though with your incredible insights; every episode you get Walter just that much more. I love your reactions!

Walter's pride and ego are blinding him and he's going forward with complete tunnel-vision. He can't help it now. We're already seeing the alter-Walter taking control and it can only get worse. Hank. Wow. Yeah they kind of painted him as more of a dick in the pilot and he still can be, but he's got a heart of gold. Let him grow on you.

And one more time I want to point out the time-lapse photography shots. Some of the most stunning visuals ever on TV!
