Not Fade Away

This is it the final ever episode of the devilishly dark drama. Angel, Wes, Lorne, Spike and Gunn join together for their biggest battle ever, and for one of them, it will be his last.

Most reactors' initial feeling towards the ending is "WTF?!?!". I think that was the case for me on the first viewing too. It's only after rewatching it that I, and most reactors, realise how great it is. As you correctly say, it's actually the perfect ending for Angel that exactly fits the tone and themes of the show. Given how insightful and emotionally-intelligent your reactions are, it's not a shock that you're the only reactor I've seen who loved the ending immediately. It's such a shame Angel was cancelled at this point. As you said, season 5 was amazing and it felt like there was so much more left to explore. Even though the finale of Buffy is excellent, the final season felt a bit like it was running on fumes and it was definitely the right time to let it end. Every time I watch the Angel finale I just feel regret that it got cut short. It's been so much fun going through the Buffyverse with you - thanks for your sharing the adventure with us.

The story continues in the Angel comics. Angel, Spike, Illyria and Gunn survive and the "senior partners" pull all of Los Angeles into an alternate hell dimension.

I was warming up my fingers to type multiple paragraphs on why the ending is so brilliant for this show but of course you understood it perfectly and verbalized everything I was gonna say lol. No matter how many times I’ve seen this episode, I still weep like a baby with the Wesley and Illyria scene. Fred/Wesley were my favorite ship on this show and I’ll never find peace with the fact that they never got their happy ending, not even in the afterlife. I can’t even talk any more about it because how emotional it makes me. Buffyverse relationships are all doomed, even Joss has said that a few times on the DVD commentaries *sigh* Seasons 2 and 5 are my favorite Angel seasons, maybe tied. When I first watched this episode I was the most shocked by Lorne killing Lindsey, I believe Angel would do that but it was such a surprise he would ask Lorne. But Angel had tunnel vision for this mission and some people got caught in the crossfire unfortunately. I have read the Buffy seasons 8-12 comics but I haven’t yet read the Angel After the Fall series. But if you decide to read those and give your analysis here, it would totally motivate me to finally read it. I remember finding your channel on youtube in early 2021 and joining your patreon sometime after so it’s been almost 3 full years of following your Buffyverse journey and it’s been such a delight and even though there’s some more content like comics and audiobook etc, nothing will ever touch the two tv shows. So in that aspect it’s truly the end of an era :( Thank you so much for sharing this experience with us!

Saw this on Wikipedia about Joss Whedon's comments on the final episode: Joss Whedon says of this episode, "This was not the final grace note after a symphony, the way the Buffy finale was. We are definitely still in the thick of it. But the point of the show is that you're never done; no matter who goes down, the fight goes on." Whedon says that Angel is about redemption, "something you fight for every day, so I wanted him to go out fighting. People kept calling it a cliffhanger. I was like, 'Are you mad, sir? Don't you see that that is the final statement?'"

Also, Entertainment Weekly held a cool 20 year reunion special with the cast in 2019 that you can find on Youtube. Interestingly, James Marsters and David Boreanaz had different interpretations of the ending. Marsters thinks they all died, whereas Boreanaz thinks they kicked ass.

Your analysis was spot on! I love this finale and you still made me think about some new things as well.

Cried and laughed along with you throughout. There was so much potential for an incredible 6th season, and that's what makes season 5 so special. Considering the time restraints, they knocked it out of the park. I love Wesley's arc more than anyone's too. From a pretentious dork of a man, to such a brave, persevering, brilliant fighter, who unfortunately was quite broken in his final days. I think as time had gone on, he would have mended, but that man had been through the ringer several times over. ..And poor Lorne, who was also dealing with a bit of his own brokenness due to Fed's death and the events following. And lastly, Angel.. he lost nearly everyone after only having them in his life for a handful of years. His family. And he has to go on, presumably for eternity, without them. He knows that, and yet he still chooses to fight.

This was a wonderful reaction Sofie! Welcome to the end of the series but don't be sad - you're one of us now. I'd also like to mention that there was a recent release on Audible that's an alternate reality Buffyverse audiobook that features a lot of the original cast as voice actors!

I have been waiting for your reaction to spike's poem since the first episode

As others have said, Sofie, everything about your reaction to this episode was spot on, from your observations about Poet Spike to Wes' heartwrenching end to the "cliffhanger" final scene. Why am I not at all surprised that you totally "got it"? It has been a joy to rewatch the Buffyverse (live action) with you. Your deep understanding and love for these characters has shone through during every reaction. Thank you always for your incredible insightfulness and touching vulnerability on this journey.

Great Reaction Wesley death really hits deep and is incredibly emotional. You should react to Much Ado About Nothing with Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof.
