This is from January 2012 from Sonic Pump Studio's new control room "Room 3". The room was still in the making and it was the holidays, so Nino Laurenne (the man and the legend who mixed the first album) gave us a really fair price for us to use it and record and reamp guitars for the TIME albums. It was a a cold and "half snowy" January and I was just there recording and reamping guitars for weeks day and night while the New Year's rockets were going off outside. :)

We got a better sound than the original recordings and this allowed us to release TIME I. But I wasn't still completely happy with the sound, but we were at the point that OK we have to put something out and so TIME I was released in October 2012.

In this video (filmed by Teemu) you can see me messing with the Mesa Boogie Triaxis preamp going through the Simul-Class 2:90 power amp to 4x12 oversized straight Mesa cabinet. We tried bunch of other amps too like the Mesa Boogie Mark V, which is pretty similar than the Triaxis, just slightly different mids EQ balance. Triaxis had more 200-400Hz low mid fullness and bass (a bit too much), but didn't have the 700-800Hz mid honkiness as the Mark V had. The Mark V didn't have the low mid fullness, which was a good thing, but it did have that annoying honkiness (even with it's 750Hz graphic EQ knob all the way down). Both were pretty equal when it came to the gain/attack tightness.

We tried also ENGL and Crate and maybe some other amps that I can't remember anymore. But it was pretty clear fast that the Mesa Boogie "Mark style sound" was our sound. And in the end we ended up going with the Triaxis.

These days I'm experimenting with different amps too to get different flavours for different albums/genres, to get the RIGHT sounds! On the new album in the making I'm currently using the Neural DSP Fortin Cali plugin and I'm really loving how it sounds already, but I'm going to test other options too in the mixing stage. I'm also currently really loving the Synergy Uberschall and next week I'm getting the REVV Generator 120 MK III to try it out. I have a feeling it's going to kick some ass! So finally the guitar sounds are coming together and I'm feeling I'm starting to "crack this code" as this has always been one of the biggest challenges. - Jari

I can see the frustration in that face. I don't know anything about music engineering but i have tried sometimes to record some amateur shit by myself and i think i've felt that way when anything is going like the way i want haha. Thanks for sharing it, you know so much about those things i admire you Jari. I wish you to nevere feel that kind of frustration, and if you are doing so, I suggest to prepare a smoothie like the one you shared with us haha and have some relaxatioooon. Good luck with the albums, remember we'll wait until it is necesary to hear that masterpieces of yours!

Ah the good old days, when amp-sims weren't quite there yet. Are you going to re-amp the guitars all over again for Time II? Will Time I then get the same treatment with another re-master, so the two albums are matching in sound?

Interesting to see a snapshot of the process.
