Whether flat against the string or going more 45-degree angle or maybe even a bit more than 45-degree to get more extreme unconventional sound. You'll hear how much that actually affects the sound. The more you hit the string with an angle, the more pick scrape ATTACK you'll get. If you hit the string directly flat to the string, the sound/attack will be very soft and dull, no attack. So the pick position is very important how you want you're playing to sound. Sometimes with lead and solos I intentionally hit the string flat to get more softer sound, but for rhythms I pretty much always love to get that scrape ATTACK! I used here Ultex Sharp 1.00 mm pick.
