TESTING! TESTING! ...can you hear us?

Operation Nightingale has returned to Aldbourne in Wiltshire for another 'Digging Band of Brothers' excavation season.

Thankfully, we will be by their sides, to cover all the action for future release (full details of coverage to be announced at a later date).

In the meantime, we thought it'd be the perfect opportunity to road test our livestreaming gear, ahead of a certain dig, coming up in June.

UPDATED TIME: TODAY at approximately 2.30pm (BST), we will be conducting a livestream test, live from Aldbourne!

The stream will run exclusively on Patreon, via this post, so keep a look out right here, for any updates over the next few hours.

Please do join us if you can. This is an opportunity for us all to give it go, and - importantly - for you to share your feedback to inform future streams. If you can't make it live, don't worry - a replay will be available to watch at your leisure afterwards.

See you soon!

UPDATE

This will be a 360-cam livestream, allowing you to rotate and explore the footage from every angle.

Open the video livestream to watch in YouTube, by clicking on the title link at the top of the video.

While watching the video on a computer click and drag using the mouse or tracker pad: up, down, left and right to get a full 360-degree view in real time! You can also zoom in or out.

Depending on your connection speed, you may need to adjust the video quality by clicking on the cog icon at the bottom of the YouTube window.

If using a phone or other mobile device, it should work by simply rotating the screen.

Note: There will be no audio on this livestream.

I have read that a manuscript written by David Kenyon Webster was found in an attic in Aldbourne. Has it been published or distributed?

Phil Ireland

Will be there and the open day on Sunday...

Conan Mills

Will we be able to watch it later? I am going to be in the field doing archaeology when it is starts and would like to watch it later.

TimeTeamOfficial

Yes, you'll be able to watch the playback later at your own leisure.

Tony Wilson

2:30 now? Just want to be sure so I can go back and press some buttons at work.

TimeTeamOfficial

UPDATE: The livestream will now start at 2.30pm (BST) - apologies for the delay while we prepare to begin!

Tony Wilson

I'm going to try viewing in my VR headset, just in case something cool happens :)

Mark Freestone

♠️ (well it’s the closest emoji to an actual spade)

Jon Knight

I have just found out about the delay, and while I am disappointed, I am well aware that new things don’t always go as planned, so I will take this time to make some fresh coffee, and I will carry on watching a programme about Julius Caesar…..

TimeTeamOfficial

Yes, we've pushed back slightly. Apologies for the delay, and we'll see you soon!

Bob Pockney

Intriguing update. I'll be using a phone. Ready and waiting !

TimeTeamOfficial

You should now be able to see the livestream. Note there is no audio

Bob Greaves

Great to see all the mini archeologists of tomorrow visiting :)

Peter Hugh McDade

Spinning the picture round, and zooming etc., is amazing!

Tony Wilson

It totally works in VR. just using the Oculus browser, I can get into 360 VR mode and look all around me. It's a big fuzzy, to be honest. can't see many details, but it's great to look around and see how everything relates to each other I saw the kids waving, and waved back by instinct This is an awesome step forward.. Thanks!!!!

Mark Freestone

Can’t rotate it on my iPhone but it’s nice to see it live! Must be roasting there today

Janet Sutton

Wow! That's great! Any chance of improving the focus on the zoom? I wanted to see what they found in that corner...

Leanne

I'm in the states and the stream was just fine. My only 'problem' was zooming in too much the picture was blurry. If I didn't need to work, I'd probably watch longer!

Mark Freestone

Cam’s too far away to see anything

Tony Wilson

love the excitement of the kids

Bob Pockney

Working well ! Watching at 1080 although quality seems below that, and movement slightly jerky, but probably to be expected. Easy to pan round 360°. Successful test I'd say !

Tony Wilson

I really enjoyed sitting on my sofa and being able to turn my head around (in VR) to see what was going on. I loved seeing the techs working outside of the trenches, and the metal detectorists pinpointing... something.. And the kids running around... and the random passersby goggling at the spectacle. Having a higher quality feed and/or feed(s) closer to the trench would be amazing. No problems with panning and lag here in London, at least... just hard to make out who is doing what. In the future, having someone there reading posts and responding would help feel more interactive. It's early days, but this is going to be amazing!

John Dodd

It was good to see school children being shown round, they’ll remember that warm sunny day, well done Time time

Michelle Balcombe

I am watching in 1080 on a Mac with reasonable broadband speed and it is quite blurry, particularly if I zoom in. Difficult to make out any detail. Rotation works very well and the movement is smooth. It's nice to be part of the test though. Thanks for this.

Mick Holden

That worked amazingly well! I'm on my mobile, and was able to look all around - even up! Looks like you're enjoying a beautiful day - and great looking trenches, so far, too. Cheers!

Adrian Murphy

Wonderful to watch the dig live, well done Time Team. As others have noted, picture could be sharper and zooming improved - but it's a fantastic start and I'm looking forward to watching more live streaming.

Roger Mills

Well done very worthwhile.

Olivia Wilson

I wish there had been more heads up about this, I'm on the west coast of the US, so i was fast asleep while it was live and when the email announcement was sent. Looking forward to future streams though!

Justin Freeman

This is a splendid extra treat for Patreons!

TimeTeamOfficial

Hi Olivia. Apologies for the short notice. We are trialling ideas and processes ahead of upcoming digs. We'll be running another livestream test at Aldbourne tomorrow (around 11am BST). Look out for further details coming soon.

Olivia Wilson

Looking forward to it and to all the exciting content to come!!!

Gay Ludington

Bravo bravo!! I too am in the US (Maryland) and am sooooo excited that you are doing this! 😁

Anja Adam

Working good! Bit late to the party but the notification came late too. I especially liked that the (pre?)school children were involved! Some can't start early enough to interest youngsters in archeology =)

Carl Johnson

Couldn't watch this live, so enjoying the replay. The 360 degree view is very cool. I wish it had some auto, but I guess that would just be wind blowing.

Beverley Lee

So disappointed. Lots of action, but, despite screen and laptop on full volume - no sound! Issue streaming to Cyprus?

TimeTeamOfficial

Hi Beverley, as noted in the post, this was a test stream without audio so we can trial ideas ahead of future digs. Today, in response to feedback, we did another trial, this time including an audio commentary. Please check out the post above. Thanks

JanD

Without audio, the livestream emphasized how laborious digging can be. Carry on!

MrBully

No sound, but the possibility to move the 260 degree is really cool. There will be so much more possible with the speed with which these technologies develop in the next few year s

Graham Dombkins

Simple live stream like this is a great idea. Lets us just watch and talk and share ideas from all around the world in real time. Being able to pan and zoom around. Fantastic. You could set up camera's at various points around the dig... this could be awesome for members.
