It's time for another Spoil Heap Q&A, as Derek and Lawrence are joined by Hilde to get her perspective from the sharp end of the trowel.

This time we also have a question for you!

We're planning to catch more of the team over this week to answer more of your excellent questions, so look out for more to follow.

Fame at last! Hilde answered my question fully, and it was a thrill to hear my n

Irene Daly

question on air but for future reference, my surname is pronounced as ‘daily’ and not ‘ dally’ 😂

Irene Daly

Hilde’s jacket is khaki or olive green.

Julie

Put answer on video on YouTube but maybe that was wrong place to put it so will say here - the jacket looks green to me.

Bob Pockney

Always great to hear from Hilde, emphasising the responsibility and also the enjoyment. I'd say dark green !

Doug Brower

Woad, after a season’s hard wear?

Louise Burdett - TTTP3

Totally green. I’m an artist and I argue about colours with people all the time - basically, we all see colour differently and, we feel colour too. Maybe it’s the TV that makes it look more green. I am volunteering on site from tomorrow so I will seek Hilde out and have a look for myself 🎨 🧐 👍

Julianne Ture

On my screen, the body of the jacket is olive green and the trim is brown.

Craig Richardson

Looks brown to me, but then I actually am very much colour blind, so what do I know?

Carl Johnson

Thanks for those answers especially the speed of the troweling. Also are you guys trying to trend like the "is the dress blue or white" from a few years ago? To me it looks green. We need a full investigation.

Kate

Looks loden green to me with brown lining.

Andrew Lamb

I am green/brown colour blind so absolutely no idea ⚔️⭐️

Wessex-Wyvern

To me, that's khaki green. The lining is also green, and the corduroy bits are brown.

Richard Stedall

jacket colour = "sludge" (greeny-brown or browny-green) - it is browner than her green top she has on under her jacket, but it is greener than the brown cuffs etc

Alice Murphy

It looks exactly the same as the Time Team jacket during this segment: green with a brown collar. I bought one of the TT jackets, so feel confident that green is the correct answer!

Paul Williams

Yes, looks a shade of green to me, with brown trimmings.

Paul Williams

Will there be an update regarding Geophys and the new ' ship' outline?

Jo

On screen, Hilde’s jacket is a definite green with brown trim.

Jo

I live in East Anglia and we’ve had some pretty stormy weather over the last few days. I was wondering what damage, if any, a sudden torrential rain storm does to the site. I’m hoping to come and visit Sutton Hoo next week.

Suzanne Brown

Moss brown or dark olive brown, definitely brown with green undertones

CCZ

Khaki with brown neck and cuffs

Jason Mann

It's green, definitely green. Definitely.

Elizabeth Wood

It's definitely brown, with a slight greenish tinge. 🙄

wibble

dark olive

Robert Ernest Arthur Harvey

It looks like a wax jacket to me, the style that Barbour made about 4 years ago called "Dale". the corduroy facings and the button placements make sense with that. Barbour normally offer either "Olive Green" or "Brown" in wax jackets, and I reckon that one is Olive Green. But it is Hilda's jacket, I think we should take her word for the brown-ness of it

Bethanny Allain

The trim is most surely chocolate brown. The body is dark green with brown undertones. Loved the episode.

Robert Ernest Arthur Harvey

Fair's fair, avoiding objectification and all that. I think we need to identify What Derek is wearing

Robert Ernest Arthur Harvey

Do you suppose Hilda is tetrachromatic ? A handful of women are, and it gives them a superhuman abllity to discriminate colours

Ralph Moon

I'd call it "olive drab", which the Oxford English Dictionary describes as "a brownish green colour," and Webster's New World calls "a shade of greenish-brown."

Elizabeth Esser

In that light, on camera, through our screen, the jacket is olive green with brown lining. But like any colors, they likely change slightly by light and projection. Regardless, it’s a lovely coat!

Favourite WasteofTime

definitely green.... a khaki olive type green but definitely a green

Larry Besel, Jr.

So who is actually in charge of the Archeology element of the New Time Team digs.

Mak Wilson

Love these interviews. Keep up the great work!

Maggie Huffman

I love these interviews! Thank you so much. I don't think it's green or brown. It's a muddy mix of bit of green, gray and brown mixed together...whatever the name, it's a good color for a redhead!!

Terry Weisenfels

It would be very cool if Time Team published the maps they made.

Don Cook

It's definitely a colour ... interesting how form is seen by others...at the end, it's form....

Paul

Green with brown neck and cuffs. Keep up the good work. 🙂

Barry Jones

Hilde comes over so well in her interview. It was a delight to get her view on trowling and the way everything is organised. Um fortunately Hilde, you were wearing a green coat, with brown collar and cuffs. And TT, thank you for taking me to the dig from my home. Brilliant, brilliant brilliant once again. Thank you so much.👏👏👏👏

Garry Matthews

Her coat is deffinatly green, yes collers and cuffs are brown, just as her hair is red. Love these chats which make patron well worth it

Terri Brown

Green sorry, with shades of brown to it, but 💚

Anita C

I see green with brown trim - however, this is filtered through a camera, video software, and my iOS monitor. Who knows what my eyes would perceive in person. It could be very different.

Rosemary Henderson

Grey-brown. I thoroughly enjoy the Spoil Heap interviews but I do have one technical comment - I find the panning from Derek/Laurence to the interviewee a bit off-putting, and don't remember this from previous digs. Perhaps you're short-staffed? Or I'm just noticing it now for some reason.

Lally

green with a brown collar

Lally

Time Team = part of our family 🥰

Alan Murdock

The collar and cuffs are brown. Otherwise, it's a dark green, at least on camera

Martin Gibbs

Dark green with chocolate brown trim.

Fiona D

Hilde's jacket could be a very dark brown, if you compare with Lawrence's jacket, his jacket is definitely green. Hilde's is some odd in-between color, maybe even a faded black that could look greenish, if you know what I mean.

Elizabeth

Looks green on my iPad!

Patricia Amero

Oh, Hilde... you are a gem. If you say your jacket is brown, I'll respect your opinion and not argue the point. I'm leaning on a green fence if you catch my drift. 😉 A great Q&A. 🙏 Thank you all

JUDITH COOKE

Thanks, Hilde, for the update in the trench. I hope you find some exciting artefacts. Thanks, Derek and Lawrence, for another great (adjacent to the) Spoil Heap episode. I agree, too many filters to determine the colour of Hilde’s jacket, what she says!

Ruth Farrimond

Brown. Definitely brown. Because she said so!

Judy Wadsworth

Great interview! Hilde’s jacket is brown, and looks very comfortable.

Eggs Ackley

In regard to Hilde’s jacket color, I quote Jim from The Vicar of Dibley, “Yes, yes, yes, yes….NO!”

Leitchy

Green, brown...who cares. Hilda looks good in anything! ;)

Michael Sperry

So many variables to the jacket color question. The perceived color is dependent on the calibration of the camera, the quality of sunlight, what colors are surrounding it, the contract from Hilde's gorgeous red hair. And then you deal with the color calibration of the screens that people are using to view the video. To my eyes, on my computer, it looks kind of an olive drab green, but just barely.

Steve Prowse

Male - Definitely green. The chromatic differences between men's & Women's eyes continues to astound me. Good anthropological archeology to work out why the divergence. I have a hypothesis but no evidence

Jude Meehan

I'm going with Hilde's jacket having chocolate brown collar and cuffs, however, I'd describe the main colour (at least as it appears to me) as 'aniseed'.

FluffyKat

Female: This jacket is obviously slate-colored with a chocolate brown, maybe luvisol- colored, collar and cuffs

Richard Lundin

Are there systematic geophysical (metal detecting included) being done along with soil pXRF surveys each day over the open site areas to characterize the chemistry and geophysical responses of the individual soil units encountered? The pXRF in-situ analyses might be VERY informative as far as the cremation grave perimeters. My Two Cents as an Archaeogeophysicist and Claudia's as an Archaeobiogeochemist.

Clara Deck

Her jacket is a lively color that has permutations from browns ro greens.

Clara Deck

Q: Are field archeologists tested for their color acuity? (meant "browns to greens")

Sonja Borst

Haha love this debate on the colour 😄 I just wanted to say 'Goed bezig daar! Groetjes!!' 👋 to Hilde from a fellow Dutchie. (would love it if the guys would try and relay that massage on air btw.. 😉)

Dario

Really enjoyable interview. Hilde is very natural and engaging on camera (as are Derek and Lawrence, of course!) and makes her professional knowledge very accessible. The jacket is more green than brown to me.

Matthew Rice

Green, goes so well with that red hair!

Kat Shelton

Hilde's shirt is green. Her jacket is dark brown, like chocolate, not black but not a ruddy brown like the collar. It seems to be made of a material that reflects slightly and picks up the green of the grass.

Sheila Pepe

The coat is mainly "dark chocolate" brown and Im guessing the cuffs look milk chocolate brown, because they are a fluffier material and are bouncing light around between the fibers. Since those cuffs read more "orange" it shifts the reception of rest toward the green side. Look of Joseph Albers "Interaction. of Color."

Chris Mathews

Her jacket is green with brown cuffs and collar

sigterm

I'm pretty sure her hair is red. And one of the reddest red hairs I've ever seen. And as for the jacket... it's in a perfect colour to match her hair. ;)

Jakub Jůzl

My tip for the jacket's color is "matte dark umber". :-)

Laura and Alex Tovey

It's green! I have the brown version of that coat and it's not the same as that!

Amethyst Gray

Definitely green on screen. Nice brown lining though!

Derek Thom

Deutan color blindness potentially but who cares - it's Hilde. She can see brown if she wants to!

Cheryl Kurucz

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Korey

It looks to be a shade of brown with possibly a green tone to it in my opinion.

Bron Lloyd

On my TV it looks dark grey! :)

Anja Adam

It's brown because I own one kind of the same jacket. It depends on the light then it gets a slightly green shimmer.

KL Sweet

Hilde you are correct your coat is definitely brown. I would like to suggest and advise that if any of your team think your coat is green when seeing it in front of them, unless they have been inbibing large amounts of alcohol just before seeing your coat as green, to get a colour blindness check as soon as possible - if these same people on your team have had a day head injury recently I'd suggest they seek medical attention stat. Thank you very much for a very interesting interviewed you've done here and the information given also during your time with the specs cam recording.

Colin

Looks brown to me.

Tom Gooden

Looks green to me !😊

Jude Edling

It's hard to get an accurate color on a screen and color shifts with the type of light. My best guess is that it is Pantone 19-0617 TCX Teak. I'm with Hilde, it's brown. It's her jacket, it's what she say it is.

Mark Lund

Of course green...same as the collar!?...What? However I am pretty sure my partner Lisa, who is also clearly colour blind (or just argumentative I'm not sure) would say brown. And she loves Hilde's pink hair too! Exciting goings on at the site it seems, and cant wait for the programme to air. And these extra 'bits' are great, to keep us going. Thanks

Amy Fisher

A greenish charcoal with brown trim

Katrin

On my screen that jacket is a deep forest green and the collar, cuffs etc are brown. My ability to see various wavelengths as separate colours have been tested and I have a much higher than average ability to see different colours. Not so my colourblind husband… he sees murky brown, gall brown, chocolate brown, and any known brown as… green.
