In this bonus episode of the podcast Helen Geake and Martyn Williams are joined by Carenza Lewis, John Gater and Dani Wootton to answer some of the questions you have about the Roman fort of Branodunum.

The team are excavating the site for an upcoming Time Team episode. They gathered in a windy Time Team dome to address the questions you've been asking on Patreon.

If you haven't yet watched/listened to our main episode from Brancaster then it's worth doing that first. Next week you'll hear from the village hall where local people gathered to hear from a panel of Time Team experts about the Roman fort at the heart of their village.

Thanks Martyn for asking my question. The answers were exactly what I was hoping to learn. It is wonderful sitting on my couch in Hobart Tasmania feeling as though I was sitting with the team on site, picturing the different features discussed that I had seen in the other videos. As a curriculum officer for humanities and social sciences and former history teacher, I particularly liked the questions Helen asked of the site. These are the sort of questions that could also bring the archaeology alive for kids. Thanks everyone. I hope to actually make it over for a dig in 2027.

A broader TimeTeam question. When the program started Channel4 was allowed 2 advert breaks in a 1-hour program, so three segments led naturally to a 3-day investigation. The latest investigation still uses a 3-day format. To what extent is that because it's traditional, or is it that 3 days fits very well with an evaluation dig, and extending to, say, 4 days would not improve the outcomes? Does each of the three days have its own character, e.g. day1 clearing modern stuff, day 2 getting into the period of interest, day3 working out what you've found?

I could listen to Carenza, Helen, and Dani answer questions for days! Not to overstate the obvious but their combined wealth of knowledge is extraordinary. Having a front row seat to said knowledge is truly a privilege. Thank you so much for this bonus segment.

Martyn Williams

Really glad you were able to hear the answer, David. Thanks for listening!

The question, if the vicus came first, why was the area of the fort empty... Could the suspected villa, temple, etc. have something to do with that? Depending on how everything gets dated. Maybe some high status people owned that land, and then later it became the location of the fort?? Very interesting mysteries.

The three day format was because all the original team had full time day jobs. Mick thought that you could learn a lot about a place in three days... It really suited the Sunday evening after dinner timeslot.

I am really enjoying following this dig and all the discussions going on on the podcast. I have been a fan of time team since the early days on Channel 4 and am delighted with its rebirth on Patreon and the privilege of being able to become part of the journey. Keep on digging!

Cheryl

Thank you for releasing this to all Patreon members and for answering my question!
