In December 2025, Time Team’s Derek and Lawrence invited colleague Dr Nick Crabb and a Team of students from Bournemouth University, to carry out a magnetometry survey in a field on The Mapperton Estate in Dorset.

Time Team had been drawn to the site, following a story of a local farmer who had ploughed up a number of intriguing Roman roof tiles more than twenty years ago. The geophysical survey used a multi probe, cart-based radiometry system and produced the following plot…

The Mapperton Estate is a truly remarkable archaeological landscape, containing a wide range of features from a variety of periods in history and prehistory. These include a number of round barrows, a possible Iron Age hillfort, a deserted Medieval village and countless historic trackways and field systems. The site itself also sits close by to an important Roman routeway between Dorchester and Waddon Hill, an early legionary fortress.

Upon examining the Roman roof tiles in the cosy kitchen of Mapperton House with owner Luke Montagu, Derek and Lawrence identified two distinct tile types. This suggested to them, the presence of more than one structure or multiple phases of a significant building. They soon discovered that the tile scatter also covered an area of roughly 20 metres…

The magnetometry survey revealed a number of further clues as to the nature of the structure and for Derek and Lawrence, there was only one thing for it….with the permission of the Mapperton Estate… it was an X-Crew evaluation!

The programme associated with this fantastic new dig is due to be released at a later date this year. BUT we’re pleased to share with Time Team members, these initial results from the surveys, as a first glimpse into what may have once been located on this site…

Take a look and let us know what YOU think may be hidden beneath the surface?

Special thanks to Dr Nick Crabb and Bournemouth University for their support, and of course, to The Mapperton Estate for granting us permission to investigate this fantastic site.

The Mapperton Estate will also be sharing more on this story, on their own Patreon page, click here.

Thanks so much for all that you do, from Chicago, America! Time Team is a global treasure!

Selena Allan

Are they possible mausoleums next to the hedgerow, far left, by the road/boundary?

Steve Mikre

Time Team is Blinding me with Science...

Kathy Carlson

Here's another American chiming in! I'm so grateful for what you do.

Leanne Bartlett

They might be the medieval village. Looks like crofts leading from each of them.

Selena Allan

That was my first thought too, then I wondered what would Stuart see!!!

Mikael Larsson

Just love geophys. So glad you shared it.

Selena Allan

Although it has a playing card shape, I don’t think the full boundary is a military one. The two sides are straight enough to suggest it was an important route, which could mean mansio, but I think the plot lines to the north are later.

Denis Oliver

Thank you from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

Peter Gore

So if there's disagreement is that geophisticuffs?

Leanne Bartlett

Rules to live and dig by: 'What would Dolly do?', 'What would Stuart see?' 😆

Sadly, the lack of data provided in this dig makes for difficult analysis by us amateur armchair archaeologists. After watching all three episodes, I can honestly say that nothing relevent was shared. They found a wall. Yay. But without sharing any context, finds, professional opinions, anything is merely conjecture. I prefer the program where actual data and professional speculation is present. I am sad to say this, but Mapperton is on the tipping edge of "archaeo-tainment". Wish I learned something!

Hi this is just Dig Watch - a behind the scenes sneak peak. The episode will be coming out later. Never fear.

The main thing (helpfully marked "A") seems to be remains of a multipart building with a northern and a western range, maybe also a south range. The "thing" to the north of this building shows up very strong on the magnetometry, possibly due to burning. Maybe a bath house or a detached kitchen. To the south and south-east might be the location of wooden outbuildings where only stone footings for timber remain, also some possible burning in that area, perhaps related to metal work, pottery, dairy or brewing.

Have always loved Time Team. Appreciate this … here’s the but - the map has zero context, like the nearest extant village? The geophys fotos/plots likewise could use a small legend & labeling? eg A - possible wall B - burning

Elisabeth

Glad there's experts on the job. Looks like a bunch of blobs to me! 😂

Chris Gardner

At what point do they hit Jurassic Dinos?

Marisa Mia

Luv Time Team, Aloha from Hawaii 💕

Tony Battles

I think the Team should do a dig here. Given the fact that there are other sites on the estate, this one is not officially known. Oh, yeah... Hello from Missouri!

Denise Smith

Thanks for sharing these photos, I absolutely can't wait for the full show.

I am trying to get a reaction from Time Team. Who can help me? In the Netherlands we use a groundradar. With Prism and Voxler software to produce the results. My questions is which software does Time Team use to present the data?

Laura Soto-Barra

Reading the comments I realize a few members seem disappointed at the “lack of context”, but after watching TT for decades we know these snippets, are the prelude for what comes next. Looking at the geophys the bumps and blobs are evidence of maybe walls and pottery and much more, so, it’s exciting. To me, the site is so intriguing that I’m looking forward to more.
