We are very lucky to be working alongside a fantastic team on Orkney, with the Ness of Brodgar team; Nick Card, Prof Mark Edmonds and Anne Mitchell directing the Ness Dig.

Here is a snapshot of our progress - a beautiful aerial shot of the archaeology for you to see.

What do you think we might be looking at?

We also have another presenter who's arrived on site... keep an eye out for our post!

Mmmm suddenly fancy a slice of Battenberg cake

Is that a post hole? How is the theory developing of what this feature is?

Julian Elcock

That is beginning to look a lot more 'lozenge' shaped, also the layout of those stones bottom left don't look as though they have fallen to me, more of a pavement like other ness structures. I'm sure that by the end of the week that will have changed again though. Great work all.

Bob Greaves

It would be great to see this overlaid with the geophys.

JUDITH COOKE

Funny how you can be absolutely enthralled staring at a square patch of earth . . .

Carl Johnson

I'm amazed at the variety of color for from the soil.

Felicity Fields

I have absolutely no idea what we're looking at other than a bit of earth with some stone blobs and a perfectly circular hole. Not standing stones, it doesn't look like, but beyond that I'm eagerly awaiting some theories!

What is the north-south orientation of the dig?

Brett W Walters

Well you can see there is something circular or oval, just what it is ...... Week 2 will hint at more. Enjoying this..

Perhaps a round house-like structure (like the ones they already excavated at the Ness), with a hearth in the center? Or a burial mound over a central cist? So hard to say - I guess you guys have to dig some more.

Elaine P

Is that charcoal in bottom right quadrant? If yes, I'd say a cremation burial mound.

Anne McLeod

So I am a bit confused. I just watched the “new” documentary released last night, but i had already seen it before? Maybe it was just polished up with the commentary? Is this now the dig to follow up on the geophys from the end of the documentary? How long do they6 have to work on it and why can’t it be left open? Surely a protective roof could be built so th excavations can be ongoing and there for the public to see? Seems like such a shame to fill it in instead of continuing to explore more. OK….just went a few episodes…guess i missed some so i am now aware this is the current dig! Fabulous! The rest of my questions stand.
