Some archaeological sites have very few artefacts, and that can cause us a major headache when it comes to dating them. That was certainly a concern for us at Kielder, where we weren’t expecting the site to be particularly rich in finds.

Luckily, we were joined by some wonderful OSL specialists from the University of St Andrews, who had a rather clever way of helping us unlock the site's chronology.

So, what exactly is Optically Stimulated Luminescence, or OSL, and how can it help archaeologists date a site when there are few, or even no, artefacts to work with?

In this mini Masterclass, we’ll take a closer look at OSL, how it works, what it can tell us about the past, and how it helped us understand the archaeology at Kielder.

Quick question - am I the only one who read the title as Optimistically simulated?

Garrick

😂😂

Robert Shaw

Incredible how technology can help unlock the past

John Anderson

We use OSL to get the age of faulting and other ground movment

Gin

Fascinating!

Anthony Malham

truly amazing .. can't wait for the results .. also interested in how tight/wide the dating can be .. e.g. tens or hundreds of years ?

Bob Greaves

Is it possible to use core samples, too, as I would imagine that would be an easier way to keep the sediments light-tight?

Mer Joyce

Fascinating science. And so well explained. Just enough detail to understand the underlying mechanism without any technical jargon. Also.... what beautiful scenery in the background!!!!

Michelle Cailes

Yes. I think that’s a great question. 👍🏻

😂 I think I have the same optical issues as you. That’s the downside to subtitles - they auto distract you from the person talking. 👍🏻🤭🤣

Alan Murdock

Waiting for the full feature to see the full story.

Denis Oliver

As always, I look forward to more. Thank you.

Pam

More fantastic technology to open up the past.

Norma

Absolutely fascinating technology. Really looking forward to seeing the results for this site.

Michael Louk

Results by lunchtime…. Isn’t living in the future amazing!

Felicity Fields

OSL is so cool! Why isn't it used on more Time Team digs? I get the fun of finds, but with results in 30 minutes, this seems like it should be standard to provide information while still on site

Theresa Moller

Incredible information. I was seriously thinking of becoming an archeologist decades ago. Sometimes I regret not doing it, but it would have changed my life and I might not have my son and grandchildren today. All of you have over the years made me be able to see the joy of discovering history. My heartfelt thanks to all of you💜

Rebecca Clark

Thank you for another great masterclass, It is exciting to learn about these newer techniques in archaeology and how they help with understanding archaeological sites.
