Surely, if anyone deserves a Time Team long service medal it's Dr John Gater. He was there at the very start, and practically every episode since. But just in case you might have missed him, here's a brief introduction to the man who brought the word 'geophys' to the masses.

We often get asked how technology has evolved since the last series of Time Team. John is on hand to help answer that question, before sharing his own unique vision of geophys of the near future...

So excited to see John on here! As much as 'geofizz' got fun poked at them, I think they were invaluable even when the terrain was against them

Bob Pockney

Agreed. I'm not sure the series would have worked without them.

Wiwikiwi

Totally agreed with the first two comments. I was always very happy to see John.

Nik Whitehead

I love the idea of geophys with drones from the pub. 😆

Mario Papworth

Used to love all the Geophys results and the arguments that ensued as to what was and wasn't there!!

Sarah Holloway

So exciting to hear about the developments in Geophys and to hear from John again . So delighted to hear that his favourite site was a Roman site. I was especially interested to hear how often the results found might mean that an area wouldn’t be built on for housing development . When I was a teenager we moved to a newly developed housing site on a hillside near the Mendips that was obviously a Roman site ,people found lots of finds everywhere in their gardens . I have often thought and wished that it could have been looked at thoroughly before a modern housing development was erected there .

I really hope, someone will create a drink called "Geo Fizz" ... I would raise a glass to TT und esp. John!

Mark Cooke

Always a good team player working had it's the interpretation of the data or lack of it that counts.

Rachael Arnott

I loved them geo-fizzing in the boat - I was convinced someone was going to fall in

Bart Remeeus

I am always excited to see John Gater, he brings a type of humor which I'd say is priceless. If things don't go as planned he'll admit it which shows his honesty. I truly hope he will return and show the team the fancy drone he talked about at the end xD

Debra Amerson

John is a real pro. I still have a hard time reading the GeoFizz results and appreciated his finger guiding the viewer to what he saw..., his explanation and his excitement of the results.

Carole Cox

Thank you! GeoPhys really gave projects direction. John, I loved the waspish exchanges with Tony, Mick, Phil. Dry humor made archeology fun!

Martha Berryman

John, Stuart, Robin and; Henry, and Prof. Aston too --you fellows now provide me with so many insights & delights. Thank you! After my own 30 years doing "landscape cultural anthropology"--finding & exploring significant sites of remote or hidden community history--your expertise at reading the ground feels enormously familiar and simultaneously your personal skills and knowledge inform me in fresh new ways. Awesome! With all I have learned, still learn, from 250 TT episodes, oh, my! How I wish I could do my sites again!. And with Tony & whole TT Crew in tow! Yes! My wholehearted appreciation! It will have to be stratified, and have a few mysterious blobs

Mark

For me, I always thought that John sometimes had an air of Rigsby about him. Usually when he was being beasted by the rest of the team. He's a very hard working and essential part of Time Team, I hope that we see more of him.

Terri

This was great. John was always so professional and focused during the episodes, it is beautiful to hear how much he enjoyed everyone. The camaraderie that was developed during the filming comes through every show. We truly enjoy "hanging out with you all" and witnessing the magic that happened on those digs.

Barry Davis

John was one of the best spots on the show. The insight that he brought to the science of Geophys and showing how important a tool it was and is was something that caught my imagination and impelled me into a study of it. Would love to raise a glass with him in a pub and just talk about anything, the man is engaging and smart!

Sarah Copeland

Thank you John for your insights of being a part of Time Team. Always looked forward to the Geophys results and the interpretation of them. Although sometimes disagreed on it was good fun to hear the arguments and then find proof in the trenches. So happy to see familiar faces returning on this project.

David Boon

I always enjoyed learning from John. He summed it up well when he said the show was one for the whole family.

John Potter

From the very begining his work stood out, and the only thing that fazed him was time its self. I will miss his viewpoint, and the showcase of new generations of innovative technology, that and looking over his shoulder second guessing points of interest.

Doug Lucey

Sit in the pub and the drone does the surveying? I like that idea!

Robert Boudreau

I remember the Brancaster dig, Mark Corney could barely contain himself John's results were so good. Would love to see what the newer equipment can do now.

Zoe Propper

Drone geofizz - love it.

DaFrenk

Oh John, always having a pen/marker/car key/rod/stick in his hands to show us the results. And here he is, still with a pen in his hand. For me John and Stewart is what drew me to Time Team. Seeing the technology evolve over the seasons showing more and more tantalizing results was magical! To see results with clear wall lines really triggers the imagination. Can't wait to see more of them in the future. Including their pub operated drones!

Sandy Bremser

Engaging, smart, and funny as heck.

Eggs Ackley

Fun, friends, beer....pretty good answer to the last question🍻

Bennyo Oliver

Thank you John. Huge fan. You put up with a lot. It would not have been Time Team without you.

Kathleen Borealis

I just wanted to say that as a geophysicist in another field I love watching the progression of the methods and just how much information can be gathered with what was available at the time. And it is amazing to see how far we have come as a field. Thank you!

SEAN STANLEY

Great to watch. A man who knows his onions.

Michael Schneider

I love John - always could read his mind. Especially when the right hand came to his forehead as he shook it after a jab from Tony!

Jeffrey Dickman

John and Jimmy performed with remarkable professionalism under tight timelines and under the glare of television. What a pleasure it was to watch them grow and master their world. Thank you for many years of great learning and entertainment.

High Street Pictures

I particularly enjoyed the various pointing tools John would use when showing the others the geophys results.

Alex B

John and Stewart are the best

Stian

I hope they will publish the footage of the day they pranked Gator by driving over his equipment

Mr Andy Horne

John mentioned HS2, have there been any historical or archeological discoveries made so far on the project ?

Fern Wilcox

Andy, Wessex Archeology has a lot of great videos on Youtube about the process and the finds. You will see some familiar Time Team faces! Enjoy! A time team fan in Minnesota, Fern

Ken McCormack

Fascinating, John! One of the things I was most looking forward to is to see what's new in Geophys. You also deserve a medal for all the times Tony wound you up - and you took it with such good humour! Hopefully the new mob will treat you more gently!

Suzanne Gabriel

I will always remember that first episode (I came late as a viewer) and fascinated by the dot matrix printer! Ah! Those were the days!
