In the first of a series of sessions, Tim and the Time Team originals begin battling out the pros and cons of various site contenders.  We like to think of this process as a 'Site Wrestle', but it's essentially an extended version of the pub scene, in which the experts argue over theories and fight for their corner!

Expect plenty of banter, the usual rivalry between Stewart and John, and many fascinating insights into the site selection process. Each team member will make the case for their own site, while their colleagues debate its merits – the research question, the logistics, and (in John's case) proximity to a decent pub! What's more, the team will be giving scores out of 10 for each site.

We kick things off with a cracking site in Cornwall – an Iron Age settlement with a 'fogou', a mysterious underground chamber.

fogou are always disappointing as we still will not know what it’s for at the end . Don’t focus on that look at what the rest of the site tells us

Paul W

Never thought I'd see 'Spingo' referenced in a Time Team video! To be fair, it is a very fine (albeit lethal) brew.

Byron Geoffrey Farrow

I like the comment about the focus, the best sites often had a good research question. Also Tim's comment about a drone - Time Team made good use of helicopters, but drones are cheaper, can be used more frequently and return better images. I expect to see them used a lot in this new series!

Carl Thorpe

Knowing the actual site.. one aspect you forgot to mention is the well preserved Bronze Age remains that are there too :) With activity from the Bronze Age through to the Post-Roman.. it would make a great Time Team site.. so hope to see you there.. with a bit of luck :)

Anthony cotton

Sounds an interesting site. Look forward to more information. I always enjoyed the iron age and roman episodes the most

Michael Schneider

If you had Francis on he’d have given it a 10 as would have Phil I’m sure. Seriously love to see these people together again discussing archeology.

John Vance

Regarding YouTube viewership numbers: There are several 'unofficial' channels on YouTube showing many episodes of Time Team (almost certainly running afoul of copyright). I myself discovered Time Team through one of these other channels. There could very well be upwards of twice the viewership that you're seeing through the Time Team Official channel.

TimeTeamOfficial

Thanks Carl, yes it's an intriguing site. We'll be sharing more details on the individual sites as we progress, so no doubt we'll catch up with you again soon!

Robert Wise

Yes! Secret tunnels ... high tech aerial equip ... Time Team lives on! And while scripting, how about some sort of estimates of how many people it took to build whatever is found, and how long it took?

Emma R

Oh wow! It's beginning to feel a bit real now, thank you Tim. I love Johns priorities, can't wait to see more pub scenes!

Naomi Wilde

This could be very exciting, but more importantly how does Carenza not age at all??

Doug Mackey

Sounds like a cracker! Thank you all for you work—and it’s always lovely to see our old friends.

Mr David J Cable

Thanks for the insight into the decision-making process. I guess it's irrelevant when you may only be able to make a limited number of programmes, but can you tell me - when planning an entire series of Time Team, was it important to you to cover a range of epochs and subjects, for balance? So did you sometimes have to make difficult choices between eg. two exciting Iron Age sites? Thanks.

Carole Cox

I remember a comment by Mick. I think he would have loved the Caravan Camp on site! I think I would like to join John at the Pub. Love Carenza but not so sure about fish n chips!

Barry Davis

Sounds very interesting. Would love to see photos as well, so when Stewart and John begin talking about the landscape and what is underneath it, we would be able to understand better. But, I must say, I love John's Pub requirements, there is a man after my own heart! And, as for Fish and Chips, I will try whatever shop she recommends. Thank you for showing how the team works on planning and selection.

Greg Davies

Thank you so much for this uplifting gift. Time Team has brought so much joy through the years and it is wonderful to share in these developments with you all.

Terry Cox

Can I suggest a swear jar that people have to put a pound into, every time they suggest “ritual” as an explanation for something?

Wiwikiwi

Wow, this is beginning to feel real. It's great to see the work and decisions before the dig. Time Team bringing community involvement to a new level. I like it. I was a bit distracted by the pub comments; I need to watch this again.

Eric Johnson

its very very exciting. If it comes off I am glad I played a (very) minor part in the funding.

phil creaser

here in Australia, the History Channel is replaying all the Time Team episodes for the umpteenth time but I still enjoy watching them again and again. The Cornish fogou was on about 10 days ago.

Starromania72

80,000 views a day by people somewhere in the world? Hey, that's me! I'M somewhere in the world!

Kylie Willison

I just watched the Gear Farm episode this morning so it was good to hear more about Cornwall. Getting excited for new episodes!!

Ian Wirick

My first behind-the-scenes moment since joining. I loved it!

Emily Flotilla

Just became a Paetron yesterday. So excited about the prospect of Time Team returning, and am glad to be playing a small part financially. If it were feasible and my cheerleader part were worth any cash, it would be a large part! Site sounds interesting, but I'm going to refrain from voting since I'm in the States. My vote wouldn't feel legal...😉😉 ✌❤🎶

Emily Flotilla

Oh no, NOT the R word? I'll put in 50 US cents due to the conversion rate! Just bought Victor's book, £35 plus a bit, turned into $50 plus between the book and shipping. I'd pay £10 more if someone could sign it! 😉 Looking forward to sharing it with my landlady as long as we're in this house together (me downstairs, her upstairs) at the risk of torturing her. She lived in Scotland ages ago in a cottage on castle grounds when her husband was stationed there from the States. Thrilled to be here friends!

Emily Flotilla

I see you! I'm out here too! Namaste

Eggs Ackley

Would have to add Phil’s “actually” to the word list👍

Patti McCarthy

What a joy to see the Time Team working together again! Huzzah! Thank you SO MUCH Tim for sharing this wonderful gift with your fans and giving us a behind-the-scenes peek into the process with our favorite Time Team crew members! I give it a 10! 😀

Laura Soto-Barra

We are watching season 11 again, in Amazon’s Prime Time. Looking forward to this new adventure. .

TimeTeamOfficial

Hi Barry, thanks for this. We will be showing photos and other visuals (maps, LiDAR data etc) of sites as we progress, so please keep an eye out. We've got some very exciting tech stuff coming very soon...

Mike Lowndes

It would be great to have Raksha part of this if available? Perhaps contracted to C5?

Paul Middleton

Sounds like a great site, has my vote

Goijaart van Dijk

"I'd love to get outside", says Helen Geake, apparently from the inside of a dark cupboard ;-)

Frank Pellow

i'd give this an eight as well. very excited at the prospect of a Cornwall site that i can dream of visiting.

Ellen Holt

Lovely. I can't wait to see it

Anne Collinson

Lovely to see and hear you all talking . Can’t wait to see what happens about the new digs

Jeff Spanbauer

All I want to ask is whether or not you'll take some volunteer diggers (MA, MS, and current doctoral student) with you?? :-)

Phelim McIntyre

Jeff, I've already sent them my CV in hope.

Phelim McIntyre

I advised someone who is thinking of doing an archaeology degree to get use to writing and saying the word "ritual" explaining that the R word is when we have no idea what it is or what it is for. Ceremonial is when we have a vague idea - and yes I am an archaeologist.

Phelim McIntyre

The first thing on every site discussion I have been involved in has been how close the nearest pub is. I've even received directions to a dig site which have been "turn left just after The "X" public house" type instructions all the way through. Not that archaeologists drink much.

Terry Cox

Exactly. This is in fact an endemic reinforcement of the ‘chronological snobbery’ bias that implies that our ancestors were less intelligent than us and therefore more likely to have a superstitious rather than an engineering use for a given implement. By applying the term ‘ritual’, we allow ourselves to continue to feel superior in the face of our obvious ignorance and we also close off further thought about the actual purpose of the artefact. It’s a really bad habit that should be challenged each time it arises.

Charlie

Looks really interesting.

Ray Roberts

sounded interesting... would really like to see a map outlining where the site is situated as in rural or center of a village or up under a farmhouse (ha) . That could change the rating?

Sue Tweedie

Sounds a great site and I'm really looking forward to something new . I too am one of the YouTube viewers- over and over again.Thank you

Jon Colcord

I think you should seed the site with buried casks of beer and see if John can detect them before the dig begins.

Robert Boudreau

Sounds like it could be a very intriguing site. Even now so little is really understood about fogous, and what if any connection they may have to Romano-British culture is a mystery. I think the real question for John though is: will you finally be able to get Stewart to buy a round?

Richard M.

just joined, it's a brilliant idea bringing back Time Team. I was watching an episode on the YouTube, my better half heard the theme tune and came in smiling & asked "Is that TT?"... go dig anywhere/anything, I'm for it

Maria

I love the iron age and Cornwall so it all sounds amazing to me. Will you be able to dig in other countries?

David Boon

The mention of needing to use DNA analysis was enough to get my vote. Time Team fans will love what DNA can tell us about the past.

Kathleen Garza

In a previous discussion, Helen said there must be a great question at a digsite. In so, are the questions: Is it a fogou, why are there post-Iron Age burials, and how does the site link to the trade route? My internal questions, after watching the video relate to the area and the era. Does the fogou that was already discovered in Cornwall have any bearing on the possibile fogou at this site? What is the Iron Age history of Cornwall? Is there a large known quantity of information? (200 years ago is a long time ago here n the USA lol) How will TT contribute to the knowledge? I feel confused by the general questions put forward at the beginning of the discussion.

Spyderactive

I would love to see an Iron Age settlement dig because we know so little about them

Sue Swinchatt

It would be great to welcome TT back to Cornwall to explore another fogou. For Carenza - I don't know about fish and chip shops but I'm told Gear Farm does great pasties!

Daniel Defoe

I would reservedly give this one my vote! Haven't seen the others yet, but it looks like this site would have so much to learn from.

Frank Meadows

I would love to see this as a dig. For me the furter back in time you go the more interesting I find it. Especially the continuity of the sites.

Justin L Williams

This sounds like an amazing site to visit and would be very interesting. Also a really nice location!

Richard Moss

I have to say this does sound fascinating. Probably the best of those posted so far (three as I comment). Intriguing with lots of questions to answer and sounds like an amazing setting.

JUDITH COOKE

Sounds like a good one, bring it on!

Melissa Rybb

I would give this an 8 as well. There are very interesting components: the fogou, which we've seen almost not at all on TT; iron age burials; iron age dwellings; possibly something Roman for even more diversity. I really like the prospect of osteoarcheaologist and chemist being involved for more detail. Further, it would be wonderful to give the locals who are working on it the kind of big boost in analysis and understanding that TT can bring. That just feels right. And an enthusiastic landowner farmer who might really enjoy TT being there is the cherry on top of the good-site sundae. On the downside, iron age can be difficult to find remaining material culture and we can only hope there are dateable organic remains. Note: even finding nothing can be ok because watching TT experts do their thing is always fascinating.

Melissa Rybb

I vote from here in MA. Where are you?

Carl Thorpe

They certainly do make great pasties :)

Adrian Waring

As this an idea where we are involved in the funding and to get the most interest,I think a Roman Villa would be a good start to get more people interested in sponsoring then move onto something else.I always enjoyed the Roman related ones first

Emily Flotilla

I'm in Michigan Melissa. I really am just excited to see Time Team come back, and really don't care where they dig. I do like prehistoric/Iron Age stuff though.

Debra Hayward

This site sounds fascinating. I would love to know more about how the native people adapted to the Roman occupation. How did the two cultures interact, if at all?How wide was the world knowledge of the native British. Were they aware of the wider Roman empire? Im not particularly interested in how the top of society lived, but would love to know more about Mr and Mrs Smith and how Brutus arriving in their neighbourhood affected their lives.

David de Groot

Everyone loves a good fogou. Definitely this site seems to have quite a lot of interesting bits to it.

Beth Ortolano

Have folks fully investigated whether Cornwall could be the location of ancient Tarshish?

Richard Vine

Never ever ever! Underestimate the importance of a decent pub with a great local ale. Site sounds good, best of the 5 I have seen so far
