In this fascinating discussion with Dr Andrew Richardson of Canterbury Archaeological Trust, Dani Wootton gets the lowdown on an incredible 1400-year old detective story, involving an early Anglo-Saxon saint and member of the Kentish royal family.

St Eanswythe was the grand-daughter of King Ethelbert of Kent and aunt of the two princes murdered at Eastry (as featured in the Time Team episode S13E06).  For years it was believed that her mortal remains resided in the local church in Folkestone, Kent which is dedicated to her.

Then, in the 1880s an ancient casket containing a pile of bones was discovered in a hidden alcove in the church. Could these possibly be the mortal remains of the early English princess?

Andrew explains how modern scientific techniques – including carbon dating, isotope analysis and DNA analysis – are helping to shed light on the discovery, helping to settle the mystery once and for all.

An interesting story well told. Really good video can't wait for more like it.

mark L

Interesting story, would like to hear more details in some future video.

Julie Ball

Wonderful project. Well done all.

Robert Wise

Great case for local interest in archaeology! Thank you both for sharing this! I enjoyed the way all the pieces were pulled together to reveal the story….

Caroline Borduin

I did see it, maybe has been fixed since then. Great example of archaeology validating history.

Punished Brains

It's not proof, but it is indeed very likely, which is way more than you can say usually. :) Very nice story!

Elizabeth Nickless

Great story, loved this discussion, great to learn of the trail of history and science and community gone into this project.

Andreas Pryce

Same here. I've mentioned it to Time Team.

Fern Wilcox

This was brilliant! I loved the "local" connection with the team and what a superb outcome for Folkstone.

Vickie Bligh

How fascinating. Need to look at the Time Team episode again.

Sarah Copeland

Myself as well, tried a few Vimeo videos and none can be found apparently

Steven McVey

Fascinating and what a great result!

Eggs Ackley

Brilliant! A tale worth telling.

The video is not working ... I don't have a vimeo account and don't want to have it.

James Hill

As above, can't run the video

Sarah Holloway

Apologies to anyone having trouble viewing this video. It seems to be a temporary issue that we've flagged with Patreon and hope to have resolved asap.

Funny reply: "Video could not been found. Unfortunately there is no rational explanation for everything." 😂🤣

Tried using Chrome rather than Firefox and it works on Chrome. This suggests there is something non standard about the way that this webpage is set up.

William F. Campbell

I am using Firefox and it works! Maybe check on updates for Firefox?

William F. Campbell

Regrets to the folks who can't see it - hang in there, it is well worth it. I second what everyone is saying. On Easter weekend we need to appreciate the church members whose faith allowed this to happen.

Andy May

My Firefox is the most up to date version (just checked) so that isn't it.

Elizabeth B Hess

As noted above, there seem to be no difficulties when using Chrome as a browser. That can be a temporary fix whilst waiting for the Patreon solution.

Martin Bowler

Can the book be added to the TT store please?

Mark Lund

I'm running chrome on an iMac and it doesnt work.

Mark Lund

I realise TT & Patreon are aware...but just to confirm, I cannot play this on my iMac running chrome, or on my android tablet, or on my android phone. i look forward to this being fixed.

Janet Hay

On being advised to try viewing it by accessing Patreon online, that hasn't worked, at least on Chrome. 😕

David Pacek

Still unable to watch on PC, tablet, or phone. Using Chrome doesn't help.

Jen A

Same

I tried four different ways and still no joy. Can't watch it. Patreon's support is totally bl**dy useless suggesting that issues with Vimeo, Patreon and videos are as old as the hills (threads back to 2018). If they haven't fixed it now I can't see why they'd bother after all this time.

MW

In fact team "Time Team" a post from Nican suggests that this is the way forwards to make it work for everyone: Jan 29 After checking the videos privacy settings I found the culprit. These Vimeo videos where set as “hide from Vimeo”. Even if they were set to be embedded on patreon.com, the “hide from Vimeo” option was causing issues. If I set them as “anyone can see” or “people with private link can see” then the thumbnail is retrieved correctly.

Kathryn

Can’t access the video, but the link sent me down quite the rabbit hole of obscure English history. Interesting!

Wolfgang Zenker

The problem accessing videos is definitely not a problem everywhere: Even though I'm using a rather uncommon operating system (FreeBSD) and a not sooo much used web browser (Firefox) I have no problem accessing the videos. As the problem might be related to some java script magic used in the streaming setup, a switch to a different web browser might help. Firefox e.g. is available for most systems, I suggest you give it a try.

David Boon

What an amazing piece of research combining the best of different techniques.

Derek Thom

All I get is this text

Derek Thom

Should also add this is via Firefox.

Ann Memmott

No luck watching this. Hope it gets resolved.

Glenn J. Hill

Cannot see it, using Win-10 and Firefox ??

Penny Screech

I am extremely disappointed not to be able to view this film. In view of the fact that most of us cannot see this post, can you not, exceptionally, make this film available on your official Time Team Youtube channel? Who knows, you might pick up new Patreon subscribers!

Jessica Wicks

In previous Time Team videos, I could not access Vimeo vids on my I-Pad, but could on my laptop (using Safari). This one I can't access on my laptop either. I do hope they can fix this soon!!!

Melissa Rybb

It's Saturday, and the video is still not available. :-(
