An amazing piece of samiam wear, would be wonderful to see in person. Looks to be an exciting site. I look forward to seeing more.

Carl Thorpe

Oooh I know that sherd very well indeed .. It is indeed an amazing piece :)

Robert Wise

Is there any interpretation of what the figures are doing or represent?

Bob and Pam

Interesting find, thanks for sharing the information on the piece.

John Atkinson

What we didn't get was a good view of the piece; why was the presenter holding it at an angle when it could, and probably should, have been shown in close-up with a voice-over commentary?

TimeTeamOfficial

Hi John. Great question. We think the really great thing about Patreon is that it provides an outlet to share occasional clips, photos, teasers or other items from the behind the scenes. These may not necessarily always be high in production values, or appropriate for the main episodes, but hopefully they offer interesting insights or glimpses into the digs and wider process. In this particular case, you're not watching a presenter but rather an archaeologist during a site visit, responding off the cuff to a question about the find. As we caught it on video, we wanted to share it with you! When the time comes, we will go into further detail about the specific finds, sites and their wider context with higher resolution visuals. In the meantime – and in additional to our more in-depth discussions – we will be sharing occasional fly-on-wall style clips like this as the process develops!

Priscilla Reeve

I imagine it was found in Cornwall, then?

John Matthew IV

Someone had money back in the day. Great find and makes me even more excited about what else we might find.

Hand Phil his spade, promise him a pint and point him in the right direction, won't be long before all will become clear!

If you consider how old this is, its stunning. I enjoy these snippets. I see it as being closer to what a friend might show you , if you visited their site

Kathryn Schauf

Where can I find a close up photo of this exquisite find?

TimeTeamOfficial

Hi Kathryn, we'll be sharing close ups and a more detailed analysis in due course. Please watch this space...

Sharyle Doherty

Fascinating to speculate how that piece of Samian ware traveled from France to Britain.

Ray Roberts

Now that would be an exceptional Time Team extra episode. Actually pressing molded Samian ware, loading into an authentic cart. packed with straw, carted to a port, loaded onto a Roman boat replica, unloaded in England, and carted to a remote Roman villa. Also, the logistics of the payment system could be shown. That would be an amazing recreation.

Kathryn Schauf

Are there people who just specialize in Samian ware by itself as a career? I think I would find that absolutely fascinating! I know it's like the Chinet dishes of the roman empire, but some of it is so gorgeous.

Kathryn Schauf

To have a young artist working his daily grind with the red clay...Like I did when I was a commercial artist with ads..

Kathryn Schauf

Sorry. I will swallow hard and accept I am sixty eight and sit quietly now.
