Well, we're over halfway through our first dig and it's really getting really exciting with loads happening around the site. We know you're eager for more details and we have more coming you way very soon (or as quickly as we can capture, edit and upload in the middle of a field)!

We currently have a few trenches open and are giving you a chance to have a sneak preview of one from a digger's point of view!

But which one we go to is up to you! So over to you – Get voting now ready to follow a digger into a trench on Day 3!

Look out for a video from Matt Williams in our previous post...

A trench looking at Lawrence all day I'd be happy with lol

Robert Wise

Trench 3 or was it “C”?

Martin Packer

The words "shaft" and "well" had my interest. One summer in the early 1980's I helped excavate a Roman villa at Tarrant Hinton - which had a massive well cut in the chalk. I bet there's tons chucked, ahem placed :-) in the shaft / well.

Hunt

It's got to be the Fogou!

Ari Wick

Oh, you would make us choose only ONE! Haha <3

Elizabeth Howell

I reviewed the videos and couldn't find any details about how any of these trenches are doing. I'm sure that's by design -- one can't be too careful -- but it would be easier to make a decision if we knew how these trenches were going! Good luck out there, we're cheering you on.

Anne Leaver

I just want to see all the trenches one by one, to see what interests me. Don’t like polls

Mark Freestone

The word “ritual” is so much part of TT DNA!

Ann H

Is the ritual shaft potentially related to the Fogou? If there is a second choice, I would want to see if the shaft expands knowledge of the Fogou.

Michael Louk

I would pick whichever trench Matt’s buns are in and the wife would choose whichever one Helen visits the most.

John Atkinson

A lot of the coverage has more in common with Benny Hill than Time Team. They used to begin with an overview of the site, followed by 'geophys' and shots inside the trenches. What is interesting about shots of two guys walking around in timelapse? I know this slightly different, but Time Team used to be about interesting people doing things but so far I have seen very little of interest.

Michael Schneider

I love watching this but I do miss hearing Phil exclaiming and pondering as he inspects his trench.

John Atkinson

Some of you may have seen me writing about my attempts to find a 'lost' dungeon at Pontefract Castle. I have managed to find a couple of witnesses who have confirmed my own recollections and Historic England sounds interested. One witness described the tiny underground chamber as an 'oubliette', and reported that a castle guide at the time - more than 20 years ago - said that it was where King Richard II died.

Donna Oglesby

I also MISS Dr. Phil Harding, with him standing there by the excavator watching what comes up with each scrape of the bucket, and then his famous, ohhhhhh awwwww... and his laugh, you can not fake that laugh of his. I really miss him. Good to see Matt again, older and wiser:-)

More Romans!

Mica McPheeters

Don't worry, they're working on that for us behind the scenes. They want to make sure we get the full "classic" TT episode viewing experience as soon as possible, where there's a narrative (which is never clear until after day 3 -- Tony has talked about that on behind the scenes interviews), and where it's exciting for us to watch like in the old days, because we don't already know what's about to happen. They're doing it right and not diminishing the future episode for us by giving us details, like on the live digs. They'll have hundreds of hours of film from just 3 days, which then have to edit down to one hour, maybe more, plus the presenters writing and recording the narrative voice-overs. I work in media production, and it's LOT of work they're throwing into this for us on a much shorter, high pressure turnaround than they used to have in the old days! So I'm gonna just enjoy these little teasers and inside peeks for what they are, and look forward to settling into a super comfy chair one night very soon to re-experience what it's like to watch a brand-new, exciting TT episode. :D

Warren Feldman MD

From the old Time Teams , I developed a curiosity of what a Fogou is for.

Glenn J. Hill

Yes, I am finding these videos to be pretty vague. I am not even clear of which site this is? I think I am losing interest in the non-information filler material. So, I guess I will need to just wait until there is more real information ?

Diane E. Englot

These are just behind the scenes snippets. I love them...makes being a Patron feel special. The real show is yet to come.

Carrie Beesley

That’s exciting! I’m from Pontefract so a TT dig at the castle would be great. Digventures dug a drawbridge (I think) there not too long ago, so there’s no reason why there wouldn’t be more new information to be found!

JUDITH COOKE

I guess the fogou trench will get the majority, but I really don’t care which one I get into. They will all have something interesting to see.

Karl Miller

Be patient Diane, The context of the show will make everything be amazing.

Paula ODonnell

I first became familiar with Time Team several months ago. I’ve watched as many of the seasons as are available on You Tube and thoroughly enjoy them as well as getting to know all the lovable, unique personalities. From them I’ve learned a lot about early British history. I feel sad that so many years have past by, but very excited to see the new digs.

Carol S

So very little is the same now, Matt, Stewart, John, Corenza and promised pop-ins from Bridge from down south. It may take a while for me to warm up to the new TT. I'm most interested in the Iron Age Roundhouse and its surroundings but the others are interesting also, just not my faves. Good luck and good digging!

April Keene

Do we have a new “Tony” yet? Big shoes for a little guy.

James Leighninger

Having trouble with the sound quality from these two! I hope the finished show is better, soundwise.

Chris Siegmann

See a post from the day before yesterday I think. Announcement made.

The Cholderton Estate Archaeology Project

The answer is all of them. This audience participation works to some degree but in reality you are restricting access. Let's have a simple set of links to each trench. So far. Under impressed with coverage but it's early days and things need to bed in and see what does and doesn't work. Wandering around with a spade over the shoulder: one annoyed me because it's a safety issue and two: what really is the point to the whole piece. Better to leave cameras watching trench activity than just under using two diggers that could make an actual difference.

TimeTeamOfficial

Hi Clifford, thanks for your comments. We're reading them all, seeing what works, what doesn't and feeding it back in as we go. We're also balancing the challenge of getting some content out to you quickly on the fly and in the field, while we prepare the more polished article. By nature of filming a dig and sharing the process with you in real time, we can't reveal all of the puzzle immediately. There is a huge amount of incredible stuff on the way, and we promise it'll be worth the wait. Thanks again for your support.

Keith Jones

See post on Natlie & Gus the new presenters.

Keith Jones

Thanks TT for the wider perspective ( and Mica McPheeter's reply above ). Obviously a difficult balance around re-creating the look & feel of the old TT programme, to go out in a single episode - versus something new and exciting with some elements of the old. I guess I , and some other Patreons thought during Tim's weeks of build-up, that with all the new Tech and ability to dig watch, live, as it were - we'd be closer to the archaeology as it is happening, rather than slowly revealed teasers. Is it more about refreshing the interest in current archaeology, or more about re-producing a TT format episode for a new generation?

TimeTeamOfficial

Hi John, thanks for the thoughts. Mica McPheeters' comment above captures the essence of the process, so what you're currently seeing is just some of the behind the scenes action while the main crew are busy filming and creating content for the main episodes. A huge amount of content is currently being filmed all across the site, and we can only show a small fraction of that in real time. There will be a period between filming and releasing the final episodes, when all the content is drawn together and edited into a more traditional programme format. Until then, in the build up, we'll continue to share more and more behind the scenes videos and details over the coming days and weeks.

TimeTeamOfficial

We've been linking up with Brigid and Raysan in NZ and we'll be sharing that with you shortly.

peter lidster

you might not get it right every time for every piece but don't forget, overall you are making a lot of people very happy!

sigterm

Well ... I can't choose because of lack of information. Al I know is the name of the trench ... well, that's not enough. As Derek&Lawrence wandered around the trenches, the only thing I heard was "no spoiler!" How should we decide without a glimpse of information, what#s going on in the trenches?

Anne Henry

Some people don't seem to realise this is not the programme that will be going out on YouTube. These snippets are the making of that programme which is very different from the finished, edited product that emerges at the end, when the archaeologists and the cameras have gone. Also, the finished article will not be exactly the same as the old Time team. It cannot be, as there are some different people taking part, the original stalwarts are older, and the technology is different. Let us await the finished product and then enjoy the return of the "people's archaeology". Thank you Tim and everyone else who have made this possible.

John Atkinson

You're right about the drawbridge, £4.5 million has been spent on the castle recently. What interests me is that the stonework exposed in the drawbridge pit matches exactly with what I saw in the lost oubliette. Finding it should be pretty easy but so far they haven't even believed me. Four of us have reported where it is now so all they need to do is either find a metal detector to find the padlock or probe the ground with a thin tool. A skewer would do, or one of those thin metal rods used for binding magazines.

Hunt

I'm enjoying the clips but I agree with those who were expecting a bit more continuous coverage - similar to the livecams on Springwatch where you can tune in at any time to see what is going on. There would be some spoilers for some people, but it would be a tiny fraction of viewers who would be tuned in at any one point to see it, and it would be very engaging to dip in and out like that - give a real sense of what a dig is like for those of us who've never been able to join one. I do like what's going on and will be satisfied just with the end programme, but presentational styles have moved on a bit since the original TT and I think you could take advantage of that to recruit more patrons and better engage your current ones.

Alex Huxley

I agree, things have changed since the old TT. I checked and right now there are 300 people watching some guy fishing under a bridge live in Lower Saxony on Twitch.tv. If TT gave me x12 live streams I would configure my home PC & screens to watch them all live. I would take the day off work and make a weekend of it. I might miss stuff and the narrative may not be clear but I would feel part of it. You are showing us 0.1% of what is going on. I want to know what it's like to be there even if that means someone standing in a field in the rain. For example one stream might be a GoPro on the head of the geo-physics team - he/she might just be walking the ground but to me that's interesting. Stream at each trench, stream in the finds room. TT seem to deliberately not showing any spoilers. If people don't want spoilers then jut tell they not to watch the videos by putting [spoiler] in the description. Waiting two months for a old style edit to come out with a cogent narrative if fine but the live stuff is missing IMO.

Steve Atkins

Totally agree. You have to think of this as behind the scenes teasers. Can't wait...But I'll have to...

Carrie Beesley

I guess this is a first for all of us so I’m sure it will take a little trial and error - thank you TT for letting us have a say and keeping us involved while balancing the substantial challenges of editing and uploading content in the field and not “spoilering” the proper programme..not easy!

David & Ruth Samuels

Couldn’t agree more — loving that it’s happening, but expected to see more of the action as it happens!

Lacy Oden

I of course want to see and know everything that is going on but I’d rather “all hands on deck” to do the archeology and get answers. All of this constant coverage people are expecting would really eat into the limited time they have for archeology which is the entire reason they are there. We will see things. We will see more than we saw with past Time Teams with this new format. This is the first new one guys!!!! A little patience is important. I’m sure this whole process will grow and evolve with each new site.

Simone Fritzen

Honestly, ALL of them. But since I have to choose: The ritual shaft.

Allegra Carlton

I want to see all of them! but first among equals is the Fogou extension

Jennifer Giddins

I would like to see all, but I will go with Fogou extension trench first
