With the dust finally settling after our first dig, Derek and Lawrence have decamped to a local pub back in their Dorset stomping ground to reflect on the experience.

It was a whirlwind three days and with the second dig fast approaching, we're busy preparing for another eventful weekend. We're reading all of your comments, making some tweaks, and feeding these in to our Dig Watch plans. Please look out for more trench-side action coming your way very soon!

As Derek and Lawrence highlight, our coverage posted during the weekend is one part of a much larger picture, slotting in alongside the film crew for the main shoot and, of course, the archaeology itself.

With multiple strands running at once, we can't reveal the whole picture in real time, but we will continue to share more behind the scenes insights and interviews in the aftermath and the weeks ahead.

Once both digs are complete, the main show enters the post-production stage. This is another crucial and complex piece of the puzzle, as the director and editors wade through the mountains of footage and data amassed over each weekend, in order to construct a coherent narrative. Our interview with Media Manager Sam gives some sense of quite how much data is collected over three days and how this is co-ordinated.

This is also the stage when additional processes and effects (including overdubs, titles, graphics, illustrations and Raysan's 3D reconstructions) are woven into the footage.

As the same time, finds are being processed, analysed and conserved, while data is collated together and analysed for the official archaeological report. Every dig must be accompanied by a post-excavation report, publishing the dig's aims, findings, limitations and recommendations for future work.

It will be some time until all these aspects come together, but we will keep you updated on each as the process develops, and outline a schedule in due course.

In the meantime, we have much more Dig Watch on the way. We're striving to achieve that balance between giving a sense of the action as it unfolds while delivering the best production values we can in the field. We also have some more incredible 3D models to reveal during the dig, so watch this space...

Thanks again for all your support and we really couldn't do any of this without you!

Mieke Kemper

U 2 are a great adition to the time team 👍 What will happen to the 'stories' that dont make it to the main episode? Maybe us patreons can enjoy these on a later moment? It would be a waist not to share them 😃

Kieran Hutchings

Great to hear all of that. With the all the info about the video data, does that mean the final episode will be shown in 4K or will it be cropped down where needed and therefore only be in HD?

Robert Wise

Good sound … thanks! A wish: once they are complete, I think it would be fascinating, and add both interest and dimension to the show, if the official archaeological report, and post-excavation report were made available to Patreon supporters as downloads. And a "Bloopers" reel!

Matthew Adams

Really good stuff everyone. My retrospective question, particularly for those who have done a TT before: what was the most unexpected (non-archaeological) challenge of the dig? And what does that change for dig 2 and onward? What new thing did you try that you will definitely keep doing on subsequent digs.

Michael Louk

Excellent work!! In the past few weeks you have both become the two best friends I’ve never met! Cannot wait for more adventuring behind the scenes. THANK YOU!!

Carl Thorpe

It was great to have met you both Derek and Lawrence, and your presence and enthusiasm has been a fantastic addition to the Time Team.. I look forward to seeing further posts from the first dig that I was on... and also the forthcoming Dig 2... Well done guys :)

David Duncan

Great Job!! Can't wait for more from you guys. Thanks!

Ann Wagner

You guys and your crew are terrific. Where is post production taking place? Is there a central studio, or are people scattered all over working away in their homes? What is it like for Tim and his people to coordinate all these different processes to create both the final show and all this social media material? Thank you! Hello from me and my cousin Maggie and friends Katie and Jerry in the USA. Time Team is helping us to get through what is a very hard time for all of us in various ways.

Fern Wilcox

-Derek and Lawrence,. wonderful job and well done for 2 guys who hit the deck running! 45 hours of shooting!. And that probably doesn't include all of the data everyone else was recording, ie: John and Stewart to name just a couple. QUESTION: How many people were involved in the dig, pre, during and post? Just curious. I am sure the number is staggering and the total hours combined pre, during, and post production would, as we used to say, blow out minds, I am sure. Thanks so much for your contributions!!! Cheers from Minnesota guys.

Ian Thomson

We are constantly hearing from a tremendous amount of dig footage. in fact so much that preparing an hourlong episode will mean Editing out a lot of goodies.

Ian Thomson

Is it really necessary to only have one programme or can we have "daily" episodes?

Ann H

Would love to see a post program extended discussion of the rejected directions referenced during the dig and pre production. "Paths not taken and why" is tremendously interesting and shares some core values of dig methodology. And details from the tents where finds are analyzed. The "rock that was a piece of pot" an d vice versa.

Mik Firestone

It was fun to wake up each morning over the weekend with three or four new posts. Honestly, I missed it last weekend.

Ken McCormack

Q. When will the episode be broadcast?

TimeTeamOfficial

HI Ken. The release schedule is still TBC, but Patrons will be the first to know once we have an update.

TimeTeamOfficial

Hi Ian. The beauty of YouTube and Patreon is we have much more flexibility in how we put content, with scope to share a lot more of each dig than previously. We're exploring ideas...

Ken McCormack

thanks! loved the stufd you've put out therez so nice to see familiar faces ... looking forward to the episode, keep up the good work and have a beer on me (if there's any spare!!)

TimeTeamOfficial

Hi Ann. Great idea! We'll be covering these themes in more detail on Patreon once Dig 2 is complete.

Elizabeth Ackermann

I’d watch all 45 hours of film if it were possible! So much great stuff so far. Really enjoying all the content Derek & Lawrence have shared. Any chance you might get two episodes out of all that content?

TimeTeamOfficial

Hi Robert. Yes, we'll make the reports available once they are complete – it can be a lengthy process, so we'll discuss reporting in more detail as it develops and keep you posted. For those who haven't seen them already, Wessex Archaeology has a huge archive of reports from previous Time Team digs, which are available to view online here: https://www.wessexarch.co.uk/our-work/time-team

TimeTeamOfficial

Hi, the episodes will premiere on YouTube so we'll release them in the best possible/practical resolution for the platform. Full details TBA

TimeTeamOfficial

Hi Mieke, thanks for the kind words! Patreon gives us a great outlet for additional context and perspectives to complement the main episodes, so we're definitely looking at ways to make good use of that. More details to follow as the process develops.

Jon Colcord

I agree! These two guys are an amazing addition to Time Team. If we didn’t have other presenters, they would have slotted-in just perfect. Can we expect to see them in the final episodes, or are they strictly the behind the scenes hosts? Keep this stuff coming!

Stephen Gent

It would be great but would enormously increase cost and time eaten up in production.

Stephen Gent

SO much footage, how a bout a really meaty directors cut?

Jean Buckley

It was so much fun watching your updates during the dig. The sense of immediacy was amazing. I felt almost a part of the proceedings. Thank you!

Steve Mikre

That's a great suggestion Mieke! 👍

Steve Mikre

I wonder if the Time Team cast & crew know just how important they and Time Team has a whole is to so many people? Especially during these difficult times...

Marjorie Gillet

Words cannot express how much I've loved watching the updates. I also missed the posts after 3 days of regular updates and interviews. I can't wait for more. Thank you so much for everything!

George Dyson

Will the finished program be shown on this site. I for one don't have a TV licence so cannot watch live broadcast?

Loz

They'll be putting the finished episode on YouTube - I'm sure they'll put a link to it on here :)

Peter Lee

Many thanks for the updates. When does the next dig start?

Thomas LaVenture

Thanks for the reflection comments, this needed to be said.

Sharyle Doherty

I’m thoroughly enjoying all of the updates from Derek and Lawrence. It’s really fun to follow along. Maybe on a future dig we could get a glimpse of how Stewart goes about reconnoitering the landscape. On TT episodes we often hear about what he has discovered but not so much about how he does it. I’d love to hear more about how he decides how to approach the landscape and see a camera follow Stewart as he explores the lumps and bumps.

TimeTeamOfficial

Yes, once complete the main episodes will be made available on YouTube and you'll be the first to know when we have an update!

Frank Pellow

this video was great. put to bed some of my questions from dig one and how you covered it. very excited for dig number 2

bil Jeschke

With all that footage you could make an ASMR of a few hours of just digging. We could fall asleep to the sound of shovels and trowels scrapping.

Elise Norwood

No apologies necessary, Derek and Lawrence. You two “newbies” were brilliant. I’m loving the delightful surprise of posts popping up and look forward to lots more.

Erica Griffith

i am really enjoying the Derek and Lawrence bits and hope they make an appearence in the finished show! I would also like to see more of the patreon names on the flags/wall/table that would be cool too

Trish Murphy

I think Lawrence & Derek were perfect for the job. We just need better audio as the wind will likely be worse in the next dig. Like others I’d like a high quality picture of the wall of fame to search for my name. How about giving us a few minutes in the pub after one of the dig days? Not to be shown in the end program, just give us a peak. I think we’d all love to have a pint with the team ✌️💚

Trish Murphy

Did we end up naming Matt’s shovel? I still love Rusty but I don’t remember who suggesting it

Cary Donaldson

Derek and Lawrence fit right in. I found myself getting emotional watching their updates because it made me so happy to know that Time Team is a continuum. The work of understanding our past will never be finished, and seeing a younger generation of archaeologists running around with such energy and enthusiasm, melding right in with the veteran cast members, gives me hope for the future.

Rowland Willets

Also interested in seeing separate episodes - released on consecutive days. And the (Patreon only?) extras also separated by “day”.

David Bond

Wonderful start. Here’s to a terrific series. Tally ho!

Paul Isles

A question for the Q&A How do you protect the site during the nights of the dig? I suppose there'd be a few who'd like to carry on their own personal time team. I just thought of something scary if you have people sleeping in a trench what happens to the people people who walk past and hear snoring from the trench?

Born Idle

Directors cuts of some episodes would be awesome - there have always been some digs where you feel that there's a lot more quality information / footage that sadly only made it to the cutting room floor...

Dorothy Frank

Will you be making the site reports available for folks to see after they are done?

Carl Johnson

Thank you guys for sharing what you did. I do wish could have shared more, but I understand why you couldn't. One Question I do have from the Digger Cam... how/why does a digger know when to go at it with a pick axe vs a trowel?

Susie Stockton-Link

Having heard about the huge amount of film 'footage'.... might it be possible to make TWO programmes out of all that - particularly if there are good 'stories' from different trenches?

Tamra Prior

Love watching Derek and Lawrence! Was initially confused as to why two presenters and also you two, but I'm figuring out that you're more the "liasons with Patreon" and "behind the scenes content filmers" I guess? Taking the heat off people doing the main filming, but also allowing us to see more (which is awesome). In your own words, how would you describe your roles? Maybe it's already been said in an earlier video and I missed it.

TimeTeamOfficial

If you enjoy these posts, it's definitely worth checking out their podcast and YT channel too. Search: Career in Ruins

Andrew Gledhill

Hi all. I am from the North. Yorkshire to be precise. I have always fancied coming down South for a holiday. Always fancied Cornwall or Dorset and Devon. BUT, if the state of beer is like what you two have in front of you. I don't think I will bother lol. That beer does look exceedingly crap. The Archaeology is great though. Cannot wait to see the finished program.

Priscilla Logan

Really enjoyed the weekend guys was so fun watching you running around from ditch to ditch. Keep up the good work can't wait for the next one good job.

Kathryn Heap

Well done to the dig watch team. They have had their trial run now and can hope to bring us some more juicy things from the next dig. I have enjoyed the interviews with the time team crew and the archaeologists. It is interesting to see what goes on behind the camera.

Simon Hooper

So did you have time to indulge in a local delicacy, namely Saffron Cake or Bun? And if so did you consider it's provenance? It's assumed to be a Roman import, but I'd like to think the Cornish had it earlier through the Mediterranian trade. Weren't the Minoans famous for their saffron & their tin trade?

Andrew Gledhill

Even if its Cider. It still looks crap lol.

Ann Wagner

Could we have a tour of the tents as you get set up? I mean showing us which functions are where such as the people running computers, caring for cameras and lights, doing catering, etc. Thank you! So exciting to have the team working again, combining veterans and new folks.

Deborah Hide-Bayne

Kia ora from New Zealand. Loved hearing about how the programme is made - all those hours of footage condensed down... fascinating!

Graham Dombkins

If I could ask. Any chance of a small backstory on what happens to the site AFTER TT leaves. Rehabilitation and preservation of the dig.. effect on the local community.. that sort of thing.

Ian Thomson

The more information the better, but it is understandable that you are working to a tight budget and not all wishes can be fulfilled. A compromise would be to publish the dig report online when it is ready, that would probably answer a lot of questions.

David Boon

I really enjoyed the interviews with team members in the first dig. One area I have questions about I would love asked at the next dig are around the decisions made when human bones are discovered. I realise the police are called to establish the bones are not recent but what happens next? Are all bones sometimes just left in situ if not important to the focus of the dig? What are the criteria for deciding which bones are of interest? How do the broader questions for the dig influence this? What is the process for deciding what further testing to do on the bones? Is DNA analysis of bones becoming a more common feature when suitable samples are found? How do you see the analysis of DNA combined with traditional analysis of artefacts changing our understanding of a site such as the grave goods of particular individuals in connection with potential family relationships? OK, I am an ancient DNA fanatic with a reasonable understanding of this area, but would love the time Team perspective.

David Boon

PS I know how much a few of the team enjoy their drink at the local pub at the end of the day so surely some questions from a Tasmanian relative with the same name as a cricketing legend who consumed a record number of beers on a flight to London should be a good reason to ask them. If not, I will just have to live with the memories of a night of free pints at the Halfway House in Pitney, Somerset supplied by members of the village cricket team in 1995 on discovering the little keg on legs traced his ancestry to their village in England.

Ingrid Mayer

Hi Could we perhaps have some live streaming on Patreon during the next dig? For ex: you give the dig cam to one of the diggers at a certain time and let us know. Just an idea….

Jude Edling

Thank you so very much!! I can't wait to see the final show but I want to see all the raw footage. Well, maybe not 2 hours of backhoe lifting sod but certainly interviews, discussions and excavating. Digging could be an entire program by itself, a slow tv show. Best wishes!!

Donna Holt

Loved hearing from Sam about what he does. I'm sure there are lots of people doing things that we don't think about. Nice job getting their stories.

Mica McPheeters

I agree -- TT, it sounded a bit like you're making a single program that'll span both sites. Can you clarify whether you're making separate shows for each, or just one encompassing program?

Mica McPheeters

I've wondered about that over the years, too. For one thing, how do archaeologists protect partially exposed human remains overnight, particularly when the weather isn't great? And I presume people and/or security stay there 24/7 to watch the trenches and equipment. I remember that one episode where someone stole one of the equipment trailers (but had the decency to dump all your dig tools behind a nearby bush before they left!). Thanks!

Mica McPheeters

Honestly, I LOVE Derek & Lawrence. They have a vibe/energy/particular buoyancy that jumps off the screen, and fits in with the kid-like fresh attitude Tony worked masterfully to emphasize in his approach to presenting. I thought they were the new presenters, so I was really surprised when you announced other people. Gus and Natalie seem nice enough (from other videos I watched of them), but they just don't have the same "it" I see plain as day that Tony, Derek, and Lawrence all have in common. Gus & Natalie are gonna have to work hard to convince me they've got the right feel for TT. :D

Bill Patton

Don’t be afraid to show more! Don’t be afraid of spoilers. All the secrecy and spoiler-sensitivity results in a lot of nice and pleasant talk about – not much, really. If anything, Patreon viewers should get more, shouldn’t we? I’m not saying to give away the best, juiciest, most interesting finds; by all means keep it for the final show. But giving us a behind-the-scenes look at a show about archaeology without showing any actual archaeology is puzzling. On the Site Walkabouts, whenever they got anywhere near a trench, the camera was always carefully angled up so we couldn’t even get a glimpse inside. That’s just..crazy. The guys had an interesting point in this Post-Dig Reflections video. They said something to the effect that there were over 45 hours of video footage and so many different stories in all of the trenches, they have no idea what will make it into the final show. Which means you probably have little to worry about, you’re not going to spoil the final show. (And even if – gasp – something was a bit of a spoiler? Would that really be so terrible?) Another thing to watch out for is the nostalgia. I dearly love the show and the old team, and it’s been great to reconnect with them and hear what they’ve been doing in recent years and their memories of the old show. But a little bit goes a long way. I’ve been rewatching all of the old regular episodes, and one thing that’s really striking is how it was never self-referential. It stuck to the archaeology, period.

Kathryn

I’m loving Derek and Lawrence as our “backstage tour guides”! Keep up the great work! I also thought this pub sequence made a nice homage to the original pub chats.

Alex Huxley

I asked - they said no. They are 100% focused on producing a one hour TV programme that will air in a few months time. Things have changed in the last 20 years. It's like doing previews of the pitch condition, the players dressing room, interview the manager and the kit boy and then doing post match interview for a football game (without spoilers) but not showing the football game live. Time Team - you are out of date things have changed, to feel part of things your Patrons want to be there with you whilst it's happening = We want it LIVE!

Robert Boudreau

I'm still tickled that Raysan and Brigid are half a world away yet still involved. If anyone can bring the 3-D reconstructions to life, it's Raysan. With his years of experience and the newer software, I can't wait to see what he comes up with. I often feel sorry for Derek and Lawrence, it's got to be tough for a couple of archaeologist to not talk about what's going on and the finds, "spilling the beans". I wonder how many times they've had to edit themselves. Must be like trying to dig a trench with handcuffs on for them.

Dorothy Frank

Or three? One per day might be fun.

Donna Shelton

I do hope the finished programs will be viewable in the U.S!

TimeTeamOfficial

Yes, they will be available worldwide on YouTube on our Time Team Official channel.

Andrew Ward

Couldn't agree more. Dropping another video now and then, this one dig could keep me happy for months. And when does a spoiler become a teaser - it could be argued that the more we know about what's coming up, the greater the sense of anticipation for the final programme. Overall, I am loving the experience of digging much deeper (oops) into the one dig, and for me at least, it can't be overdone.

Janet Sutton

I really enjoyed the first dig and am looking forward to the second. I know it’s a way off in the future, but will the project reports be available for purchase?

Freda Bradley

I agree...the behind the scenes folks are key to the success, too.

Freda Bradley

As for Q&A, I'd love a "spoil heap" with Steve Shearn from the past film crew to tell us how it's changed over time to this one. I'd also like a bit more about HOW the drones have changed things overall, and even how they've altered archaeology in general. Derek and Lawrence, you guys are SUPERB and you're doing such a good job blazing a trail for an entirely new addition to Time Team. Sort of building the airplane while you're flying it, I suppose, and you are such fun guys, it's so great to watch. Your enthusiasm is infectious.

Dorothy Frank

This is a great question! I'd love to hear about this too!

Katie Runion

Just a bit of constructive criticism. Audio really needs some refining
