The new episodes are taking shape in the edit suite, and it's currently looking like each dig will be separated into three parts – one for each day, around 30 to 40 minutes each.

Here's our Director, Emily Boulting, in the Mann Bros studio in London with an update on progress.

Q&A: Ask Emily

What would you like to know about the post-production process? Ask away in the comments below and we'll put a selection to Emily to answer in a future update.

We're following a production theme: the various technical elements and creative decisions involved in putting the finished episodes together – graphics, titles, music, editing software, voiceovers, refining the narrative and so on.

Mark Cooke

I can’t get any sound ? Help please

Scott Curtis

That's great to hear regarding an episode per day. So much new time team material to soak up and enjoy. Can't wait!

JUDITH COOKE

I have sound. Interesting to hear more about what’s going on behind the scenes.

Mark Cooke

Thanks Judith tell me what they said lol

Paul Smyth

Loving the idea of an episode for each day. Far more depth than in the standard TV format

Lee Olver

An hour and a half to two hour Time Team? Yay!

Alan Baulch

perhaps you could show us the editing process in a little more detail, say from rough cut to finish, obviously just a small segment.

TimeTeamOfficial

Hi Mark, seems to be working ok this end. Is it just on this video or other posts? Please let us know if the issue continues. Thanks

Robert Wise

Thank you so much for the update! An episode/day sounds like a great idea … I’ve always wondered how much info had to be trimmed away just to meet the original time limits for Time Team one. Questions: Isn’t the production process itself worthy of a segment? Sure seems so to me! Does the chosen story ever change as you get further into the production process? How do you decide which story line to follow? Are there ever story lines you regret not being able to follow? What do you wish you could do in production, but are currently unable to?

Mike Darby

A slightly oblique question, and I don't know whether I have missed an explanation, but what has happened to THE TT theme tune? The new one's are OK but it just seems strange somehow.

Henrik Vogt

Ms Boulting, do you seek input from the archeologists on the story during editing, if so when?

Dorothy Africa

How do you preserve the excitement of the moment when a discovery is made without making it look 'staged'

Mark Cooke

Happened at the start of time team here then ok . But just on this one now, will try later

Matthew Adams

And what constraints did you apply to come up with the structure you have? The 30-40min episode-per-day seems very strong in terms of easily consumable units of time, with a built-in narrative structure that plays to the "traditional" just-three-days strapline. What did you play with - and did you try outlining [or whatever your methodology is] any other narrative structures?

Yvette Hoitink

Without the constraints of a TV network limiting the time, how do you determine how long to make it? I often find that strict limits makes a piece stronger, because you have to cut the non-essential.

Philip Stack

That's great! 3 x episodes/dig was what I was hoping you would move towards. I think it will be a good balance and prove to be popular.

Derek Thom

Just to wish you all the best in what must be a daunting task.

Diane S Ratliff

Thanks for the update. Production is something I know very little about. Anything you can share would be interesting. So excited for the episodes. And super glad there will be one episode for each dig day. I think it would be great to had a group discussion about the dig post episodes. Kind of like the Tea Times about old episodes. No worries about spoilers 😉

DanielWhit

This would be a really fast turnaround if everything was ready yet after shooting only just over a month ago. Remember in the "good old days" some episodes were shot in April and only broadcast in the following February.

Wiwikiwi

That sounds great! I'm really looking forward to seeing the episodes.

Emma R

I have a similar question, who has come up with the new opening music, I have to be honest, I really like it, although I did adore the old intro music as well, which one will be used in the new episodes and why?

Mike Darby

Exactly ...... my thoughts!

Lynn Edwards

Channel 4 made each programme 3 x 20mins + adverts = an hour. 3 x 30 or 40 mins sounds wonderful! Thank you! But how do you choose what to miss out, what to take from filmed-on-site to voiceover, what to add in (eg trowel scraping with sound effects) to heighten the tension (to quote Phil Harding in at least one episode!)?

Daniel Gower

Are you following a similar editing format as the old shows? As in, using music as a bed in places with narration?

Bill Gast

3x 45 minute episodes per dig sounds really good as a formal Theatrical Release (note how I worked in a slight duration increase there on your original duration estimates), but then we need about a 4 hour Director's Cut of each dig for those of us that are simply addicted to this show/team . Thank you for all the hard work going into this. Can't wait to see the final product.

Bill Gast

And, if I may, rather than a question, just a thought. 3 episodes to cover the 3 day dig. Might there be room in the new format for a 4th episode per dig that shows all of the work that goes into cleaning, identifying, cataloguing and preserving the finds? That would be of great interest as well. Respectfully.

Stephanie Stewart

Bill summed it up perfectly. We are all addicted to TT.

Andreas Pryce

Sound is working fine my end, on an Android phone (Galaxy Note 8) 😃

Richard Gemmell

Does production cover the visual and audio style as well as the content? If so, are you still developing a style to suit the program? Apologies if it's a silly question. I know so little about production that I don't even know what I don't know. :)

Mark Lund

make it as long as you like/need. But as mentioned here before and alluded to previously, videos to accompany the actual programme, or rather in addition to that show many of the post dig details and science, technology that goes into the research. Also hopefully there will be more information being discovered as time passes after the actual digs, with research, analysis, and academic input.

Zoe Propper

Looking great, so glad to hear that each dig will be in 3 episodes. It is such a great idea.

Mikael Larsson

You should do an extended directors cut as well.

Hillfort Games

Question: Do you decide on what needs to be explained by the presenters in VO during the edit, or do you show the rough cut to someone to find out what needs to be answered after the fact? General Feedback: As much as I would personally love a 3x45 minute per dig, i would be worried it would drag out on some digs for the casual TT viewers. I believe the average person would much prefer the original format and then just make a "Dig Watch" episode of 45 minutes. That way the original format holds while giving the extras to those of us that want it. Also helps that its a 2/3 of the work for the edits too.

Tom Gooden

Hi TT. Thanks for the update. Very much looking forward to watching the shows. Like the 3 episodes per dig. Will you keep the same intro graphics and music or similar ? It is sooo Time Team ! Cheers

Carol Edwards

3 episodes/dig is great! I love the behind the scenes stuff, both production and archeology.

Trish Murphy

I’m sure I’m not alone in saying the wait is frustrating but we’re all here because Time Team gets it right season after season. I’m completely confident that both episodes will be worth the wait. Thanks for the update✌️💚

Caleb Warner

I'm curious how you decide what story(ies) to include in the final cut? With three episodes that may not be an issue, but I would image that over the course of three days multiple ideas or threads are explored with only one or two making the final cut.

Rowland Willets

Looking forward to 3 chunky separate episodes. I hope they will be released on consecutive days. Questions: - Was most of the footage in 1080p or 4k? - Will there be properly written subtitles? - Any plans for a DVD and/or blu-ray release? (1 disc per dig) If there any issues, I’d like to know what they might be. Thanks

Mark Bousfield

Random question - how have the new technologies used in the digs changed the way in which you are able to tell the story of the dig & site? Or are you finding that out as you review the footage and looking how best to incorporate it?

Carl Johnson

Very nice that we are going to get daily shows and not just one show over 3 days. So very excited... My question.. I might be similar to one that was already asked.... For the voice over narrative do the presenters come back in and read the voice overs or did all that work take place before you started editing?

Richard Lowe-Jackson

Really excited at the proposed daily format, definitely a move in the right direction. I know this segment was billed as a question and answer session for the director so my questions are. 1. Have you decided to use Victor's drawings in helping to tell the story or gone solely down the route of computer graphics and in particular 3D representations. 2. Although perhaps not as relevant to the Roman and Pre Historic periods are you intending to use historians and archival information to help give the narratives a fuller context in a similar way to the original Time Team. 3. The role of the presenters is to help tell the story linking the elements together and asking questions that viewers may want answering. Do you rely wholly on the pieces to camera filmed during the 3 days or do the presenters film or record voice overs to fill any gaps or provide post dig information along the line of radio carbon dates etc. 4. As in the later series of the original Time Team did you film segments with green screen backgrounds to add CGI effects post production and if so do you decide which shots fit the narrative and then add the CGI or is the CGI work done first and then you decide what clips to use.

Sam Kerr-Smiley

I really like the idea of three 30 to 40 minute segments for each dig. More depth and explanation to some processes would be really interesting; I remember Phil explaining in good layman's terms the meaning and importance of stratigraphy. Finds are great but getting across the bigger picture is what old TT excelled at - I am hopeful this format will be able to expand on that.

Robin Charlton

I like the sound of three 40minute episodes, but I would also like more in depth coverage of some of the background and technicalities to the digs. Possibly as a separate programme or on Patron. For example: 1) What is the explanation for the fact that it is often only small pieces of pottery that are found. If I broke a pot then I would be throw all the remnants into the ditch at the same time, so how does it get dispersed? Surface finds I can understand due to ploughing etc. 2) Is there more to know about the sources of the building materials... location of quarries, how was the stuff transported. 3) In the case of the villa, was the output from the land predominantly for consumption by the villa itself, or were significant amounts exported, if so, how far and what were the transport links... was there a local road network in addition to the well known Roman roads? 4) Victor produced those wonderful drawings which fuelled the imagination and allowed one to visualize the past; I believe that some of his work will be incorporated in the new productions where appropriate, but I hope that there may also be other means of depicting the site in the context for the whole landscape

Laura Soto-Barra

What do you with all the footage you don't use? Is there a Time Team archive where you have raw video from old TT shows? Thank you for showing production work which is always invisible.

Shannon Lenz

Thanks for the update! Can't wait to see it!

SEAN STANLEY

Good idea having 3 episodes for one dig. As long as it's riveting to watch.

Beth Ortolano

Question: As you get towards the end of the editing process, how do you keep "fresh eyes" to keep the pacing from getting too frantic or too laboured?

Sara Rowland

I am curious just how much is scripted or planned versus "it just happens and we film it". There must be some storyboarding? Or maybe not? It always amuses me watching old TT that you see Tony walking to someone and you know the camera must be held by someone, then it cuts to a drone shot of the same scene of Tony walking to someone, but no camera person there. So a lot of shots are set ups, obviously. So how much is set up, how much is organic, dynamic?

Alex Pardoe

I'm really looking forward to these SIX episodes! Awesome work, team. Question: Are there any plans to move to interactive formats, perhaps not in these two digs but in future? By interactive, I mean decision points presented to the viewer that allow access to further/additional content within the title that branch off the main narrative arc rather than to progress the narrative as per Netflix interactive titles. E.g. presenters discussing finds in trench X, viewer can choose to find out more about finds/context through interactive prompts or continue with the narrative.

Pamela Langridge

I'm interested in how they go about making this reboot modern and different from the original tv show, but still recognisable to fans. Is making a 3-part YouTube series any different from making a single TV episode?

Neil Donaldson

hi time team, ive been tuned in to all you guys for most of my life (only 43) lol , anyway just joined patreon and im so happy , im obviously going to miss some known faces but so glad to be even just a small part of this im so happy 😊

Donna Oglesby

Knowing Time team, have confidence that you will do an great job, just as the time team 1.0 was...still missing Dr. Phil Harding.:-(

David Boon

Obviously finds happen in a particular order. What is the process for rearranging clips into a cohesive and engaging storyline and not necessarily the order they were filmed.? Does that require someone with an understanding of the archaeology to work with those with film editing expertise?

Ashley Bryant

Curious as to what editing software on what processor? And how long does it take to render the timeline with all transitions and effects in place? I'm on a pension and can only afford a Raspberry Pi to do my basic editing. In DVD resolution (576p) it takes the length of the timeline (one hour to render for a one hour timeline) for a lossless .mp4. But ramps up exponentially for 1080p, one hour for a four minute timeline. For example, I record and cut the ads out of The Edgar Wallace Mysteries, and to render an episode takes about eight hours on my Raspberry Pi 400.

Dr Richard Mellish

I've muttered before about music, which is at best a distraction and at worst makes videos unwatchable for some of us. I may be in a minority but I'm not unique. This latest update has music even while Emily is talking, so I really can't be bothered to watch.

Dr Richard Mellish

Further to sarah Rowland's question; in the old Time Team it's not only when Tony is walking somewhere but when two people are talking. One moment you see them from a distance and the next in close up. Clearly a camera and a microphone have been moved nearby, but there is no apparent discontinuity in the conversation. Either the whole conversation was scripted and done twice or it wasn't actually happening in the distant shot. It would be good to know how it was done and whether the same is happening in these new episodes.

Martin Packer

@Richard Mellish, wouldn't two cameras filming the scene allow that?

SEAN STANLEY

Excellent idea. Great knowing it's in 3 parts. I thought if was a good idea when it was mentioned before.

John Porter

Good to learn of the progress, but please could we not have the very loud background music - it makes it so difficult to concentrate on what is being said!

Niels Broertjes

Yes! 3 parts per dig! Great stuff! Really looking forward to my first sunday watching a time team episode for 1.5 - 2 hours.
