Thank you for all your questions following our recent post-production update with Director, Emily Boulting. As always, you've provided excellent food for thought, and now Emily has got together with Lawrence Shaw to answer them. So, what is the key to successful editing? Fish eyes apparently!

Thanks Emily and Lawrence for providing some fascinating insights into the complexities of the post production process. The new episodes are due to be released in Spring 2022, and we have some very special Patreon exclusive extras planned to accompany them. But there's plenty more to come before then.

It has been an extremely busy few weeks here at TTHQ, as we look ahead to the next year and beyond. We know how eager you are for the latest news and there are many developments in the pipelines.

There will be some exciting news breaking tomorrow about a new partnership with a key British institution, so please keep a look out. We will also be sharing our own update tomorrow evening (UK time) on our YouTube channel, outlining our next steps forward. More details to follow.

Of course, none of this would be possible without you, and what you can expect over the next year is more interaction and even more ways to get involved and have your say!

Best wishes from all the team.

What a great insight. It must be so difficult trying to second guess where the evidence and information available will take you - then make a start on putting content together - only to be side tracked as new stuff comes up and have to rework the story, often :)

This segment was wonderful! Thank you both! Very well done! I learned a lot about the editing process as I listened, it sounds absorbingly creative, and that creative state is such a wonderful place to be! Emily … good luck with this huge process! Lawrence … nice job, thanks! These insights add great depth to the TT2 experience, I hope for many more. Any chance for a "bloopers" edition?

Daniel Gower

Thanks for featuring my question!

I think if there's enough of "the good bits", making a new show span two episodes would be one way to keep within a certain "attention span" time. As Emily said about not having the network-imposed time limits, it opens opportunities, but there's also a danger of making something too long. Breaking it into two would be an option. Great interview, great answers. Really looking forward to the shows.

Ive always been curious about what goes into, and how long it takes to wrap up a site? another thing also is ive wondered with sites that stay open for further excavation by local teams of archeologists, what happens to the sites? Is there a possibility of adding any of that to future production?

Priscilla Logan

Thank you so much for the Insight of what's going on behind the scenes enjoyed this little preview very much. Well done to both of you thanks again

So one thing I just noticed is that we are now into the spring for the final product? That is a change from what we were hearing before about end of the year. Please keep these fresh video bits coming for those of us with ants in our pants in the meantime!

Eggs Ackley

Very satisfying production insights. Thanks so much Emily and Lawrence!

Mark Bousfield

Thank you for asking & answering my question. I look forward to looking back at this video after watching the new episodes and seeing if I can unwind the hints!

Ann Wagner

Thank you! Clearly, it isn’t just editing an episode, it’s revising the whole format to suit the new medium. So I can see why it takes time and thought. Reviving and revising such a great program has to be a bit scary. To what extent is Tim involved in editing and formatting questions?

Mike Meyer

So programmes pushed back to the Spring, that is disappointing. Without the discipline of a TV networks schedule is it a case of work expanding to fill the time available? I never saw deficiencies in the production of episodes in the past.

SantaCruzCylon

Spring?? It’s still autumn. 😢😢

Hi Mike, we know how keen everyone is to see the new episodes. To put the timeframes into perspective (taking classic episodes as an example), it was typical in the original run that excavations filmed in June / July might not be broadcast until May, the following year. So, the current scale is actual shorter, but obviously in this new route we're sharing progress throughout the entire process of development, which fans didn't get to see in the past, before the end product arrived. We can't wait to share the finished episodes, but also have to balance speed of delivery with doing the programmes justice. As Emily and Lawrence highlighted, there are many aspects to consider, and being an independent return, there are new challenges and opportunities to explore. It's very exciting, but it does take time to figure out. Between now and release, we'll be sharing many more insights in the process and we have some very special Patreon exclusives on the way to thank you all for your support. Thanks again for your patience!

I've edited videos (using davinci!😁) And boy howdy it takes time. I cannot imagine the amount of work that would go into editing several cameras worth of stuff from three days. Especially if you have multiple stories to tell. I'm surprised you can get it done so quickly. Still, I can't wait, and look forward to every little snippet you provide. Great interview! Thank you for having it.

I was incredibly disappointed to learn that we will need to wait til spring to see the new episodes. As I have terminal cancer, this is a huge blow as it's unlikely I will ever see them. I had hoped they would be broadcast at Christmas as I'm doing my best to live til then. If I'd had any idea of how long this would take, I would never have joined as I knew my time was limted. Since the digs finished you have just given us small sweeteners to keep us happy and I now find this delay to be rather unfathomable and, possibly, cynical. I know these things aren't the work of a minute - but next spring ---- that is downright cruel!

TimeTeamOfficial

Hi Peter, we will definitely do something special for you and will find a way to ensure that you get to see an early preview. We'll send you a private message to see what we can do. Tim sends his very best wishes and we are looking into the possibilities now. Thank you again for all your support in what must be an incredibly difficult time – we want to be a source of happiness not frustration for you. We're also about to share some news of some other Patreon exclusives which will be happening ahead of the official launch to the general public, so there is more on the way. We'll be in touch with you directly very soon.

My best wishes to all involved in the production, which no doubt will be fantastic, when shared with patrons and in a wider sense. I for one have no problem with it not appearing until Spring. Getting regular updates of various projects and news, and being able to interact through Patreon or otherwise is great. It’s a far cry from the ‘90s and waiting to watch it all on television! Keep up the good work TT. Signed .... one happy punter! 😉

Mark Lund

Very interesting, I would not know where to start! Also like the like the 'Village People' fancy dress stylee! (And I dont mean Emily). Spring now...well if a jobs worth doing...

Pamela Langridge

"That's me! It's my question!" [me yelling at the tv last night] 🤩

David Boon

A fantastic insight into the process and why a quality final product takes time.

Roger Mills

Matching all, the camera colours - just another thing one never suspected the need for... Really interesting Q&A

Roger & Joanna

I don't think Alex meant live interaction. (I might be wrong) But, my take on it is, more like if the presenter has finished talking to the guy/gal in the hole, and is going to walk away, we could have the option to stay and watch them continue digging in the hole or follow the presenter on to the next hole.

Alan Murdock

The live dig would be interesting but, I think that most of us would have to go to work and miss a lot of it.
