As you may have heard, our geophysics team, led by Dr John Gater, have paid a visit to the Royal Burial Ground at Sutton Hoo in recent weeks. We will be sharing much more on this landmark project over time. But for now, our resident GPR guru, Jimmy Adcock, has put together this short video diary for us.

Jimmy was a key member of Time Team for around ten years, bringing his ground penetrating radar expertise to the range of geophysical techniques on offer – and plenty of pranks too!

Great stuff can't wait to hear about what they have found.

Jimmy and Mike … Thanks for this one! And it motivated more curiosity! How do you manage to make straight-ish transects? Do you get to see real time results as you go? I’m more curious than ever about the resolution and sensitivity of this new GPR system. I guess 22 lines of 6 cm data is a pretty big hint about the resolution? Are there any results from its trials that could be shared with us?

Priscilla Logan

Thanks Jimmy and Mike can't wait to see the results

I am thrilled by this project and really excited to see the results. I was curious about how you assess any risk to the archeology by the weight of the vehicle/equipment before embarking on a site?

Malcolm Wright

As an amateur geophysicist the cost of my Bartington and Geoscan kit is high enough. I guess this latest GPR must be in 6 figures?

Bruce Martin

I had no idea about Time Team here in the USA until 3 months ago. I’ve watched every episode and can’t wait for 2022!!! I’m a Master Social Worker and archeology tells us so much about human behavior.

That was interesting and I find the shops from the drone breathtaking as you see so many details from above the site. Sutton Hoo has always fascinated me since I was a child when I read about it in a library book. My fathers ancestors came from Suffolk and the story of Sutton Hoo was spoken about by my Dad and his Mum when I spoke about it. I found history and archeology fascinating and still do in my late 60's. I have lost count of how many times I have watched the different series of Time Team but I enjoy it and the humour that was between the members of the team. I can't wait to see what they find when we get to see the new shows, and these videos are getting me excited lol. Take care and stay safe please everyone God bless you all Mary-Ellen UK

I love the explanation of the equipment, I am so glad they have a Time Team school for old timers like me.

Good to see the guys and how it works--and there is only the one still photo with Jimmy's feet. ;)

So, this is all very interesting, firstly Time Team’s connection with the boat reconstruction team, and now Time Team’s survey work on the site. Can we assume that this will all lead up to this becoming one of next year’s Time Team dig sites? Please?

Hannah Hassall

This video was ridiculously well timed. This week in my Understanding the Past module on my archaeology degree we did GPR and all things Geophys, and on Great Discoveries we did Sutton Hoo!

Wonderful update! I was a bit disappointed not to see the obligatory TT camera shot of Jimmy’s shoes.🥾🥾

Eggs Ackley

He traded in the shoe leather for a seat in an EV. What’s the world coming to?🤨

Connie L Merchant

I know. :) And even that still photo only goes down to his ankles.
