Digs can uncover some unusual and unexpected finds, as we discovered on the morning of Day One, on the Broughton estate.

This strange looking horn is to likely to originate from a much more recent period of history than the Roman villa - possibly a post-Medieval hunting horn. The small insert that resembles a claw may originally have held a reed to produce the sound.

Post-Excavation Update

Post-ex analysis is still ongoing for both of Time Team's recent digs. This is typically a complex and time-consuming process, involving the insights of a wide range of experts in various disciplines, which are then collated and compiled into the final report. We'll be sharing much more information on specific finds, trenches and developments as the process progresses, so please watch this space for further updates.

This dig has been amazing. Loving all the more modern and updated Tech that John has the drones that can help Stewart is also great, and more of a view of everything that the Helicopter rides from 20 yrs ago. All the evidence that Naomi has been coming up with form all the soil samples is also key to understanding whom lived here and their daily lives as well. Great to see Matt coming up with walls as well for better understanding where the where the villa is and how those walls relates to the rest of this HUGE building complex. So waiting for day 3..

I am REALLY enjoying these extras like the 3D models. Amazing stuff and a wonderful addition to the show itself.

What's the chance of someone replicating the horn, adding a reed and finding out what it would sound like? Maybe not Roman but belonging to the site!

Doug Mackey

This is a fascinating find!

Post medieval could mean local records could indicate what people were there who might’ve been hunting with a horn? Or is it too much of a stretch
