As Tim Taylor has announced, we're thrilled to be returning to Broughton in Oxfordshire for a second year running, to investigate the sarcophagus that led to the Roman villa's discovery.

Tim recently caught up with Dr John Pearce of King's College London, an expert in Roman funerary practices, to discover more about sarcophagi. In this fascinating conversation, John places the Broughton burial within a wider Roman tradition that stretched across the empire. John also explores some of the modern scientific techniques now available to archaeologists that are shedding light on ancient funerary rites.

Very interesting ! What a great presentation on a subject that I as 75 years oid man think about more as the time approaches to leave this world and enter the next. It is a subject that we all think abut eventually. Great showing! thanks Farmer Rich.

Interesting to hear of the god Viridius again. From the very first time the name came up in that original TT dig, I immediately thought that this had a very strong British/Celtic connection to the Green Man. I have been surprised ever since that the connection between Viridius and the Green man was not made by the team. Any comments?

Very interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation. Not in the least because kudos to whoever is doing closed captioning. not sure if it's UTube that's upped their game or Time Team. Whichever I hope you use this better updated version when you put out the Classic Time Team episodes. In particular they got feat, instead of feet and gums as in aromatic, instead of guns. There were about 3 fairly bad examples and 1 quite bad but all in all well done. I do notice that when there is a more one on one type of conversation the translation is better. The commentators speak more clearly, which doesn't always happen at the dig. Thanks again for a well done vlog.

Just a brief first impression … Dr. Pearce seems like he might have some knowledgeable insights to share with TT2, and I think he’d go well on an episode. it was a pleasure to listen in on the conversation. Thanks to both of you!

Thoroughly enjoyed this…more like it please! Hope Dr. Pearce and TT2 make it back to the sarcophagus . I wonder how many slaves suffered hernias facilitating this burial.

I'm excited for the next phase and what might be discovered when Time Team experts return to investigate the Broughton Roman landscape. So many possibilities... 🤔

What were the dates of the Roman festivals of the dead because this might indicate what seasonal fruits or foods were eaten on grave visits? Some graves in eastern Europe have a slot for wine and a small alcove to leave an apple on the saints day and 40 days/year anniversary of death.

Excellent discussion. I do hope that the bones can be investigated. My dream future Time Team dig would be a cemetery or burials of some form where DNA analysis could be undertaken. We are learning more every day from ancient DNA with the ever increasing number of samples that have been tested. Investigations just relying on funerary goods have been challenged by DNA evidence in some cases.

Philip Stack

A fascinating discussion. Thank you.

I am trying to watch Roman Dead: Investigating the Broughton Sarcophagus but all I get is "An error occurred". I have had this before with these short Time Team videos and just given up but I would like to watch this one.

Donna Holt

Enjoyed the insight into different aspects that can be covered with a single site.

Jude Edling

Having grown up in a funeral home, this is a fascinating episode. Thank you!

Elisabeth

Really enjoyed this detailed discussion. Thanks!

Rachelle Gates

Great discussion very informative thank you!

Oh I'm going to have such fun here as a fan! The little bit about the how the sarcophagus was put in the ground was fascinating. Thank you to everyone who gives their time for this and in this case, of course, to Dr Pearce.

I'm just now investigating the links to other 'very interesting' roman burial discoveries & excavations that Tim included here. Much appreciated 🙏 thank you, Tim Taylor & Time Team.
